All I got was a grey squirrel.

As a matter of interest, what calibre did you use, Andy?

I took him with a .30-06 Remington 700 (which is older than me!) using Hornady Superformance SST 150gr. The buck was 100yd away when I took the shot with him facing to my left. It broke one rib on the way in, went through the heart and broke two ribs on the way out. Pretty ideal conditions for the shot and I'm thankful he didn't suffer. When I located him, he was lying dead as you see him in that pic, about 20 yds into the woods from the impact spot. I'm sure in the UK you would have used a "moderator" or suppressor for this sort of thing but the US government makes such things complicated by prohibition era laws.

Thanks. Sounds like a good shot. 30-06 isn't that common here with most people using .243 or .308. Most shooters do use a moderator/silencer/suppressor, whatever the calibre, as it makes things a bit more civilised and a well moderated .22 rimmie with subsonic ammo isn't much noisier than an airgun.

This is Sage's button buck. Sage is stoked!

It's great to see the young guys having success and the trail cams helped us to know where to be. I'm still chasing the big guy... he doesn't seem to be around. He knows how to hide!

I passed on 3 does on Sunday. Didn't see any on Monday. Today, maybe today is the day? My .30-06 is ready and willing if only one of those tined fellas would step near it's crosshair!

Speaking of button bucks, Bruce got his very own! It looks just like Sage's, they could be brothers.

Once again, treestand 4.

FYI, Bruce used a Remington 700 in .30-06, but it's newer and fancier than mine. All three of our deer were taken with a single humane shot each.

the shot was 100 yards. There were what I thought were two does... one was eyeballing me straight on - not a good shot. The second turned broadside and I fired for the lung.. caught a shoulder too.. dang.. messed up some meat.

As I told my cousin on FB, we have learned much on this trip. Andy, Sage and I all got our first bucks. I have been trying for a deer for over 10 years now. It's nice to bring one home. Andy has tried his hand several times in the last 10 years but he too has drawn up empty. Sage, out for his first ever, had success. How awesome is that?

We did a lot of homework this summer and fall. We've been studying movements as this thread attests. We applied what we knew.

Now the king buck is still out here we think. We have a couple more days. We might just get lucky!

Thanks for listening to our tails!

What to do when you're in a treestand but there are no deer to shoot:

Pardon my digital "zoom" but at least it recorded at 1080p @ 60fps so you can enjoy the artifacts to the utmost.

Was it really 86F/30C ?!?!?!

It was warm but that that warm. I think the trailcam was cooking in the sun. The first pic of me tonight was 70*F and I had my jacket off an hour and 10 minutes later (time based, no motion).

Since I'm in town, I picked up the guys' meat today.

Each box was only about half full.

Two boxes wouldn't fit in the small freezer, but it all fit into one box:

So... Two small deer equals one bushel of meat.

deer in my yard.jpg

This damn thing was in my yard a few weeks ago. Most points I've seen in town, but there's typically a doe and fawn or two in my yard several times per day.
