Audi A5 - Retrofitting ACC triggers strange errorcode 00526 008 from trailer ECU J345

Hi All,

Ive just finished retrofitting ACC (installed new J428 and upgraded J527 and J285) on my Audi A5 2013 succesfully, but just after i now receive errorcode 00526 008 from trailer ECU J345, indicating that my brake switch is periodically defect (I can clear the DTC but it returns if i use the ACC ) ? I think i have verified the trailer coding on all modules but im not sure if anything in terms of ACC is to be coded for the trailer module itself as i have not been able to find any detailed documentation ?

When I carried out an ACC retrofit recently on my S8 I too had an error for towing module that would not go away until the correct cluster was fitted and coded, then adapted have you adapted it to suit?

I may be barking up the wrong tree though as my install didn't have a trailer module, so it was strange that I would get a fault for it.

Hi Delboy, Thank you for the reply. As written i added the radar (J428) and upgraded the steering wheel and instrument cluster (J527 and J285) to versions supporting the ACC. I have also coded all my modules for trailer but as ive posted, i can not code the trailer for ACC (maybe due to insufficient doc - i can however see that the meassurement blocks for the trailer module seem to have values for ACC but states its "not occupied" so maybe a cord/wire is missing ?) The ACC however runs without error in all matters (except for the trailer DTC) though i seem to have the same challange as you (read your posting), in regards to adjustment (moving target after driving between -0.8 ..+0.8). In this matter i seem to have a static vertical value 2 (adjusting the radar vertical and horisontal physically, only affects the horisontal value 1 in the meassurement valueblock 002 ). Do you also experience that in terms of adjustment ? Br. Michel

Yes in all the readings I have taken from the radar control unit the Vertical maladjustment never changes, only the readings for horizontal, steering angle, and lateral yaw change with each drive cycle.

I have noticed however that on drives with twisty roads the values are far from the 0.5 stated in ELSA, on journeys mostly of motorway etc the values are better, for the most part mine behaves ok but i think that the beam is still slightly to the right side.

I intend to make a mirror plate to fit over the radar so i can adjust the radar unit using a laser level that you can buy from diy store.

Here is a screenshot of my latest readings with the label file I made for the radar control unit.

Hi del, Your plan sounds as a good idea. Could you provide some more details on how you expect to do it, as id like to try it to (read about a DIY but i have only been able to find the desc of the radar valueblocks and DIYs using WAS testers) ?

By the way, wathch out for your current value. When i adjusted my radar it ended at somepoint above 0.9 and then it locked up with the misadjustment DTC code and another DTC code saying it was defect. At that point the misadjustment DTC it could only be cleared when it was adjusted to be below 0.8. The defect code only disappered when i disconnected/connected the battery (i was close to buying a new radar unit as the defect DTC appeared permanent ).

You can see all the steps I took here in this thread, I can't say for sure if your radar has the same measuring blocks as the one in my car but doing a comparison of the various screens you may be able to determine what your blocks are too, if they are the same you can apply the label file thats in that thread, but beware that its not complete as far as adaptations etc and the coding info relates to A8 D3 not your car.

You can comment out the coding section of the file so its not presented to you in VCDS.

As for your trailer fault have you checked that the trailer wiring socket is not got any issues?

What a great and impressive DYI work you have done. Your posting on http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10419 will help out a lot of people. I wish i had read it before i started doing mine - it would have saved me a lot of time i think. The work i've done however seems very simular on the A5 except for partnumbers and ECU locations of course.
As soon as i have some spare time i will dig deeper into the adjustment you have described and see if i missed something important.

However, my question to you was regarding the mirror and laser you described, but looking at your radar picture it seems as the A8 radar does not have a mirror mounted permanent like mine ? If so, thats is what confused me as i thought you would use a laser having 2 mirrors (I plan to setup a fixed laser approximately 500m in front of my car and then let it hit my permanent mounted radar mirror and adjust untill the laser allmost hits itself - i guess that what you also planned ?).

Regarding my trailer problem - My trailer ECU works perfect using trailer physically (factory mounted and coded - i only had to apply coding to the radar and the parts i have upgraded/replaced) and the DTC i get only arise when i use ACC and use the breaks at some point. I have checked the diagrams for other models and they all indicate that the communication between the trailer ECU and other ECUs communicate via the CAN bus so missing wires should not be an issue. I therefore suspect that the trailer ECU needs some coding but i hav not been able to find any docs besides coding the trailertype (manuel/electric). I therefore made my posting hoping that somebody knows what all the bits are for - seems as only 0100000000000000 and 0200000000000000 is documented from what i can find.

replying to this old thread and hope you resolved it in the meantime. I have a European VW Sharan originally equipped with ACC and a trailer, but receiving same error. The brake light switch and its plug was already replaced by the dealer, but the error still happens occasionally. It is less than before, but still exists. Any help from you is much appreciated. The dealer is running out of ideas what might be causing it.
