I hope I don't upset our almighty leader, but I guess I'm not mentioning any competition.

What is an equivalent VCDS product for BMW? I want something as robust, well supported, and simple to use as the Ross-Tech product.

The BMW I intend on tinkering with is a 530d E39.

Well, our almighty leader 'dabbled' in BMW diagnostics (was it BIM-COM Uwe?) but didn't develop it further.

Yes, it's been close to 10 years now since decided to stick with doing just one brand really well.

Here's one tool that might be useful:

Whether it's "equivalent" to VCDS is another question; I've never played with it myself.

Depends on the year you want, but you can buy "INPA" setups (cable-shack UK is good) - it's what BMW used, if they still don't.

I'ts actually a package of a few different programs and is actual BMW software.

How about this?
It costs a tenth of what Bavarian Technic is charging/

Yes. This is the BimCOM product by SECONS. Maybe the pricing is significantly different in Costa Rica through distributors, but in the United States it appears BimCOM is sold direct at roughly half the cost of the equivalent Bavarian Technic kit that is also sold direct. I can't speak to why one might be better than the other as I haven't had the opportunity to use either product.

Another lower cost option is Carly for BMW by iViNi-Tech at http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/ - For US orders they actually do fulfillment of the adapter using Amazon and the software application for Android or iOS is of course sold through the associated app store. I haven’t done a lot with Carly yet, but they have been fairly responsive to my initial evaluation inquiries thus far. While I tend to favor domestic vendors, which would give Bavarian Technic a leg up, I felt the price of Carly was right, at least on the surface.

Of course what I’d really like is to have a BMW app from Ross-Tech. Nothing is perfect, but I've always found the Ross-Tech stuff to have the best mix of functionality, support, and price.

The best option is to buy a GENUINE BMW NEXT interface from a dealer. They're approx. €500 plus VAT in Ireland.
After that you can decide what to do...
ISTA+ is 'available' which is Dealer Level software and identical to what a Dealer uses.
INPA/E-SYS are also 'available' and is BMW FACTORY software.
Above are pirated.
However, you CAN BUY OFFICIAL SUBSCRIPTION from BMW to be legit.
