    P0011/p0012

So I've been getting both the P0011 and P0012 CEL's for a while. After I clear these codes they seem to only come back a day or two later and only during a cold start. Not sure if that information helps. I've very new to VCDS, so bare with me. Here are the last few maintenance items that I've done that might help with these codes:

Timing Belt (changed twice) last changed at 146,317 miles
Cam Chain Tensioner changed at 160,011 miles
Cam Position Sensor changed at 174,161 miles
    Current Mileage = 174,633

Based on what I have read, it looks like I need to check the following?

    Oil pickup tube
    Cam chain off by tooth
    Timing chain off by tooth
    Timing
    Fuel pump relay

Are there any measuring tests that I can do with VCDS to help with this problem? Hope I'm posting this stuff correctly. Below is my latest scan

I also posted this on the ross-tech forum within www.vwvortex.com, but haven't gotten much direction yet.

    Thanks in advance!

From the info I've gathered it seems I should next check the oil pickup tube/screen. I'm not sure if the fuel pump relay could contribute to this. I mean, the car doesn't have problems starting, but the fuel pump doesn't prime anymore when I open the door.

go to basic settings 94. it is the basic settings for the cam adjuster. VCDS lists the procedure incorrectly in basic settings. but you need to hold your foot on brake and push gas pedal to 2000 RPM that will activate the basic settings. if it fails there is an issue with either the timing of the cam chain or a broken guide on the adjuster tensioner.

Also seems dumb but when is the last time you changed your engine oil and are you using anything lighter than 5w-40? there is a tech bulletin related to a similar issue with low/dirty engine oil.

How long has this been occurring?

Coreyj, thanks for the response. I've normally used 5w-30 as that's only what I've been able to find locally. I recently got the oil changed about 100 miles ago and with 5w-30 Liqui Moly. This CEL has been on for months...maybe 8 months or so.

I'll run the VCDS check and report back.

    Basic Settings Group 94

So I'm not sure if I was doing this correctly. I held the brake and I'm not able to press the gas...it's like the gas is disabled for block 94, but I can rev the engine for block 91 which I have also posted. Am I doing something wrong? I'm sorry, but I'm very new to VCDS so if I'm not doing this correctly then you'll have to explain it step by step. I searched on Google, but I couldn't find any instructions on how to test this.

So I'm not sure how to 'Test On'?

When you push the gas pedal down you have to put it to the floor then the rpms raise automatically to 2000rpm.

now that you have ran 94 and we see that you have a problem.

the next step is to do the output tests on the advanced functions on the 01-engine controller. scroll through until you get to the cam adjuster solenoid. you should hear it click on and off. if no noise is heard then the solenoid is not activating and it needs to be replaced. (most may not agree with the following but its free to try: i have had some luck in the past by tapping the solenoid with a light hammer while simultaneously putting 12v on the connector of the solenoid and it has made the solenoid start working.)

If you do hear/feel it clicking then the next step is to blip the engine up to around 4000rpm then fully release the pedal and if you hear a rattling sound that is the cam chain with slack in it as a result of broken guides on the adjuster. if no noise is heard its still a good idea to remove the valve cover and physically look with a flash light at the chain guides upper and lower to assure they are intact.

If nothing seems out of the ordinary put the timing belt in TDC and inspect the cam timing marks.

    hope this helps. good luck

    Corey

Ok, I ran the output tests and I heard the solenoid clicking. It sounded like a loud clock...tic tock? I revved the engine to 4k and let off the gas and didn't hear a rattle. But it's hard to hear for that with my downpipe and intake. Also in regards to a rattle after revving the engine. I do here something that sounds like a rattle after the engine warms up from a cold start. I was told though that the sound might be the secondary air pump shutting off.

I'm not able to myself pull the valve cover, check the guides or the timing belt, so I'll have my mechanic check that out.

    Below are the videos.

    Thanks again!

some other "rare" possibilities is the screen on the cam adjuster is clogged with debris. or oil is leaking into the cam position sensor housing and messing up the readings..?
