I don't need fog lights (it's foggy like 1 day a year) so I installed low brightness LED fog lights so they act as Daytime running lights, they are the same brightness as the stock DRL's.

The fog lights already come on when the DRL LED light strip comes on by enabling Bit 3 in Byte 2.

[09 – Cent. Elect.] [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 2
Bit 1 = DRL via Front Side markers
Bit 2 = DRL via High Beams
Bit 3 = DRL via Fogs
Bit 4 = DRL via LEDs
Bit 6 = DRL via Side markers
Bit 7 = DRL via Tail lights

But the problem is the fog lights turn OFF when the light sensing headlights come on at night or when overcast. I need to press the fog button to turn them back on.

How do I make the Fog lights automatically come on when the Low-beam Headlights come on in VCDS?

I tried looking for this Land Selection option so I could set it to Canada mode, but I cant find it in my car.

The Car is an Audi A5 (8T) Coupe 2011. Should be the same as the A4 (B8).

I seen those codes before but aren't they for high beams only?

I don't think they affect the low beams (dipped beams).

Correct me if I'm wrong.

They are the only coding I can come up with - what happen if you use the coding ??

The Fogs doesn't turn off when low and/or high beams are on here in Europe - so a coding exist.

The problem arises when you have any LED DRL lit in the dark, they are so bright they blind oncoming traffic, which is why OE LED DRL’s automatically dim to an acceptable level when the dip beam is turned on.

Have doubts but I'll give it a try anyway.

The brightness of the fogs are the same as the stock DRL's so I'm not worried about dazzling other drivers.
As rlarsen said the fogs dont turn off in Europe so there must be a way, most likely a Land selection option hidden away somewhere or an unknown byte in 09: Cent. Elect.

I think riarsen is referring to that fact that the fogs can be coded to stay on once they have been physically turned on,
I assume your headlight switch is the same as we get in Europe... i.e. you pull the switch out to turn the foglight on.

If your foglights are the same brightness as your OE DRL’s with the headlights off then surely they will be brighter than the OE DRL’s when you have the headlights on? (as the OE ones will dim down)

On the North Americas models the fogs switches off when high beams are on - but not with low beams on.

Here in Europe the fogs doesn't switch off with low- or high beam on.

But when you physically turn the lightswitch to off the foglight position of the switch springs back in (to the off position) so when you turn the lights on again you would need to physically pull the switch back out to turn the foglights back on?

Yes, that's right - and I can't see any problems with that.

On my cars I normally have an AUTO position, where I just leave it on - the lights then switches on/off automatically, and if I want the fogs on (if the need is there because of fog), then I just pull the switch, and push it in again when I want to turn it off.

In some countries it is illegal to have the fogs on together with low- or high beams (unless the need is there because of fog - then is is OK), and it is illegal to have the fogs switching on automatically as DRLs - but it is not illegal to use them as DRLs - just not as automatically.

Likewise, thats how I use mine (apart from I go from off to Auto as I don’t want them to come on Automatically... personal reasons)

It’s illegal in the UK to use foglights unless there is serious fog around also.

The OP however is after them to come on automatically when the low beams are turned on, this I imagine will not be possible due to how the lightswitch works (unless it is physically wired differently)

The A5 has a simple button next to the headlight dial on the dash, it doesn't spring out or anything.
If I press the fog button when the headlights are on, the fog lights turn on, and stay on.
I just need to stop the fog lights from turning off when the headlights turn on.

As for the brightness, the LED fogs are really not bright at all. They don't dazzle others during daytime or night time.

Yeah, on the A4/A5 B8 it is a button for both front and rear - but on some models it is pulling and pushing the light switch.

Could your problem be that you have coded the fogs as DRLs ??

What happens if you disable them again - does the fogs then stay on with low beams ??

With 'Fogs as DRL' disabled, I dont know if the Fogs turn off when the headlights turn on. I didnt check it before doing the coding. I suppose I could check it tomorrow.

The thing is the stock DRL's in the headlight stay on when the headlights turn on, so anything else coded as DRL should also stay on.

It seems there is an override that turns off the fogs when the headlights go on. I suspect it is a country-specific thing. For example when it is set to Canada or Europe, the fogs stay on. If set to ROW, UK, Nth America, the fogs turn off.
Similar to how it is done in the A8 http://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...program-vcds-have-your-drl-foglights-2854619/

I'm guessing this country-specific option is actually in VCDS somewhere, but no one has found which bite/bytes they are yet. I see a lot of unknown entries in VCDS.

Would this info be in the workshop manual?
I do have a copy but I can't recall seeing this kinds of lighting related settings in there. I'll have another look anyway.

Have you tried changing the country code?

No luck. :(

[17 - Instruments] Country selection in Byte 9
- It was originally set to [00 = Germany or Not Specified]
- I tried Canada, Japan, Australia, ROW. These didn't affect the lighting at all.

[09 – Cent. Elect.] "Front Fog Lights stay on with High-beams"
- I tried toggling this option, but it made no difference with the low beams.

[09 – Cent. Elect.] "Fogs as DRL"
- When disabled: Headlights are OFF: I can't turn on the fogs at all.
- When disabled: Headlights are ON: The fogs are off by default but they still turn on when I press the button.
- When enabled: Headlights are OFF: Fogs turn on automatically.
- When enabled: Headlights are ON: The fogs are off by default but they still turn on when I press the button.
