Hello again, in this car... we replaced the cooling fans and now cooling system is running fine no issues. but, after replacements you now I am trying to use VCDS as much as possible so I can be trained by myself in planet VCDS.. so, I tried output test 08 Hvac /03 output... 1 out 2 cooling fan runs for a few seconds only fan for HVAC start up. every other component runs just fine. my question: are they supported (both the fans). why both fans didn't come on? is it something in VCDS or is just not supported. thanks again, and please focus only in my question. the car is fine now.

In a car that old, it's not something missing from VCDS. Modules in that car will only support sequential tests, a sequence that's pre-programmed into each module. There's also a question of what module really commands the fans.. Try Output Test in 01-Engine and 17-Instruments too, to see if there's one that turns 'em on full-blast.

agreed on old model. what module really commands the fans? thanks Mr Uwe for that... that's the question and that's explain everything thank you.

Nothing in engine nor instruments...I have been reading schematics and they both are connected by the same solid state power relay. not a module. controlled by a thermal switch attached to rad tanks ( old fashion way to control fans). Thanks.

No "ECT Overheat" test in the cluster? I seem to recall that being in at least some of the VW clusters, and it would command the fan(s) to full on.

Out of my documents, it must be possible to activate the fans by output test in module 08 Klima.

Hello,

so, I tried output test 08 Hvac /03 output... 1 out 2 cooling fan runs for a few seconds only fan for HVAC start up. every other component runs just fine. my question: are they supported (both the fans). why both fans didn't come on? is it something in VCDS or is just not supported

On this vehicle (2003 Audi TT) the J293-Coolant Fan Control control module (Front left engine compartment, next to radiator) is responsible for activating the fans. It receives input signal from the HVAC Controller to activate the fans, it also receives inputs from the F18-Coolant Fan Control thermal switch to run the fans which is to cool the engine as needed.

- The 08-HVAC controller should have an [Output] test for the following:

Coolant Fan Switched ON
A/C Clutch (N25)
A/C compressor cut-in
Fresh Air Blower-V2
Temperature Regulator Flap Motor-V68
Central Air Flap Motor-V70
Footwell/Defroster Flap Motor-V85
Air Flow Flap Motor-V71
Interior Temperature Sensor Fan -V42
Segment test
Outside Air Temp. Display-G106
Idle Air Control Regulation

Please note the following:

- Be sure to select the Output test and let it run (will run for about 60 seconds), do not skip over the test that you wish to perform.

- The coolant Fans will run when the N25-A/C Clutch output test is activated and when the HVAC system is operational (N25 is on) with the Engine running.

- Fan speed 2 is only achieved if the signal for high engine temperature from the F18 is present or the High Side pressure of the AC system closes the F129-A/C pressure switch

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Got it... thanks for this explanation....

Car is gone by now but. after replacing fans assy I tried to do this very test, but only one fan tend to run for a few (seconds ( HVAC ) since they are connected by same solid state relay I would say both supposed to run.

Next time I will follow your instructions. funny thing is; since I am learning VCDS. I relay on Snap-On scan tools for for some easy bi-directional and I knew the fan was bad. Now I will use VCDS properly see I can manage to perform the test. thanks for you response.

If you read the repair manual and traced the function of the circuits in WD....... you would know that both fans are to come on at the same time.

You know you can turn the fans on in this car by simply turning on the AC?

When changing the fans in this model....... it is pretty routine to change the module in this car and the fan switch in radiator.

Battery acid likes to leak on the module, and cause all kinds of havoc in that area for connectivity + ground issues which make the fan run hot!
