2013 Q5 Trailer Hitch Retrofit

My vehicle is a 2013 Q5 3.0TDI, Australian spec.
In trying to code for a trailer hitch (not yet successful), I am seeing some strange responses when I look at or modify certain controllers.
I have never previously seen the "This appears to be an uninitialized control module" message and am not sure why it would be the case?

Any advice?

- Did you go to your Gateway Installation List and edit for any changes you made on the vehicle?

In trying to code for a trailer hitch (not yet successful), I am seeing some strange responses when I look at or modify certain controllers.

- Were there any instructions with the components that you are installing, specifically Coding information?

- Wiki pages do have some Trailer Retrofitting information, Q5 is not there specifically, there is some other platforms that may be similar that can help as a guide.

I think this thread is mis-titled. VCDS shows data for ever module that your gateway knows about.

My guess is you are encountering a message like this in your attempts to recode modules:

This message appears when you try to recode (or make certain other changes to) a module that has never been "molested" before and in which one or more of the Workshop Code, the Importer Number, or the Equipment Number are still either all 0's, or all 1's (in binary). Many modules will not accept coding and other changes unless the tool also provides them with non-zero values for all of these items. These values have no functional effect on anything, they just record "who done it". So when you see that message, you have three choices. You can:

* Click [No] and have VCDS try to use the values currently in the module. As stated above, some modules won't accept changes if there are still zeros on any of those fields. If the module does accept your changes anyway, this is the stealthiest way to make changes, so you might want to try that first. If it fails, you can try something else.

* Click [Yes] to have VCDS use a WSC of 12345, an Importer Number of 123, and an Equipment Number of 12345. For a while, this almost always worked, but it seems the guys in the the white lab coats back at the mothership in Germany weren't amused and some newer modules will also reject this.

* Click [Cancel] to go back to the previous screen and enter some more plausible (and less predictable) values yourself. E.g. use the WSC for the dealer you purchased your vehicle from, the Importer Number for your market, and a random Equipment Number.

Yes, first thing was to add the trailer module (69) to the list.
I have neen following very detailed and comprehensive instructions from "Crustynoodle" from Australian forums and my specific problems seem to lie in small nut significant changes made to controllr module coding for the MY 2013 cars.
Specifically, there is no long coding help available for my ABS module (03), and if I just change the bit that worked for others with older cars then I get an "out of range" error.

- Were there any instructions with the components that you are installing, specifically Coding information?

- Wiki pages do have some Trailer Retrofitting information, Q5 is not there specifically, there is some other platforms that may be similar that can help as a guide.

As there isn't yet a wiki for any of the mlp cars (B8 A4, A5, Q5), these give me general directions, but as indicated above I am at the detail level. The oem wiring module coding instructions are for a dealer and not recognisable for Vcds use.

Sorry if I mis-labelled my post, can it be corrected? Hapoy for you to do that for me....
My car shows a non-zero WSC and for the modules where I am making changes with long coding helper and the changes match my car then I am saying "No" and it then accepts my coding. So I think it will be OK to go on like that?

Where is the best place to go on seeking detailed help for my specific trailer issues?
Should I write up the specifics of what is not working in the retrofit forum, or continue with emails to Ross-Tech support?

Yes, if it accepts the changes despite the zeros in Importer and Equipment Number, then that's fine.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like there's any problem with VCDS, so this is not really a "product support" question, it's a trailer-hitch retrofit question. Since you've already posted an Auto-Scan, I'm simply going to move this thread to the Retrofit section. We would much rather try to handle retrofit questions there than via e-mail.

Trailer recoding 2013 Q5

OK, thanks Uwe;
So now I'm up to the trailer retrofit.
I bought an Australian-spec towbar (aftermarket, Hayman-Reece) and ordered the Electrical installation kit from my local Audi dealer.
The electrical installation kit is part number 8R0 055 202 J, and consists of the cables, 13 pin euro trailer socket, and the "trailer connection unit".
Now this kit is not available for sale to customers in Australia, but comes as part of the full towbar installation kit; so my dealer actually bought the items that make up that kit for me.
Everything has been installed and now what I need to do is code the vehicle to allow this to function and get rid of all of the faults that are created when I plug in the trailer module.
The vehicle has all of the controller modules as shown in the autoscan above, and so far what I know about a trailer retrofit is as follows:

I need to plug in the trailer comnection/detection module (oem, branded Audi and Westfalia, I will edit later with the part no)
I need to add "trailer" (item 69) to the Installation list of the CAN Gateway module 19
I need to recode the Engine module 01 to include the "Trailer Installed" bit.
I need to recode the ABS module 03 to include the "Trailer Hitch Installed" bit. Security is needed for this activity.
I need to recode the Central Electronics module 09 to include the "Trailer Hitch Installed" bit.
I need to recode Backup Camera coding module 6C by adding 1 to the appropriate digit in the data word.
I need to recode the trailer module 69 to suit country (in my case Australia) and to select "removable" as opposed to "swing away" hitch.

Is there anything else I need to do or does this cover it?

From the above list, I can do pretty much everything EXCEPT the ABS module coding. The VCDS does not give me any help here, with there being no "speech bubble" telling me a suggested security code and the long coding helper telling me that there is no coding information available, and anything I try to set gives me a "value out of range" error and rejects the coding.
At this point I see the same dash errors/faults reported as when the trailer module is first plugged in (before any recoding) which include ESP and TPMS errors.

Any assistance appreciated!

Hello Neil,

We may be able to build the coding for all of the modules that require modifications for trailer hitch retrofitting but those are usually done online at the Audi dealer using SVM (Software Version Management). SVM is a system used by VW/Audi to flash update control modules, and in certain cases, to change their Coding, Adaptation and unlock Component Protection.

We do not have a Wiki retrofit procedure for this reason and we are reluctant to assist with these retrofits because SVM is used for so many operations. For example, If you send the vehicle to the dealer for a recall or service in the future SVM may delete/overwrite all of the Trailer retrofit operations (completed with VCDS) with factory type coding, resulting in all of the fault codes you have at this time.

That list you have is pretty complete. My personal 8T/8K/8R template is:

* 19-CAN Gateway - Use the [Installation List] feature in VCDS.
* 01-Engine - Use the [Long Coding Helper]
* 03-ABS Brakes - Usually requires Security Access 61378 first but we do not have a label file for that controller so ticking "Trailer Hitch installed" is not possible at this time.
* 09-Cent. Elect. - [Long Coding Helper] Trailer Hitch/Recognition active in Byte 18.
* 10-Park/Steer Assist - Not Applicable here.
* 6C-Back-up Cam. - Uses conventional short coding.
* 69-Trailer - will need to be coded after installed.

My concerns:

You have one of the latest 4 Byte long coded 03-ABS modules rather than the older 3 Byte type and I do not have a coding chart at this time.
I believe 13-Auto Dist. Reg needs to be configured for the Trailer controller.

Both of those are a major liability concerns due to the lack of documentation and fact that they are extremely important Powertrain players in this vehicle. My only advice at this point would be locating scans (perhaps in forum) from a similar Q5 that was born with ACC and a Trailer module so we can compare coding values. The full VIN from the baseline vehicle would be extremely helpful but I realize that may be difficult.

Hi Dana,
Thanks very much for the response, and for your words of caution.
I accept what you say about the dealer coding it with SVM but at the moment that is difficult.
You see, my car is 900km away from my dealer, and in a different state.
If I was at home I would have sucked it up and paid the $2800 for proper supply and fit of an oem towbar. In Australia that means a locally sourced hitch (the euro ones don't meet Australian Standard) supplied to the dealer from Audi Australia, complete with the wiring and controller kit.
The city where I am currently working (900km north of home) has a dealer who quoted me $3600 for the same thing. Not happy with that, so I called the local manufacturer who would supply and fit the hitch (including their aftermarket controller) for $1000! The compromise is the non-genuine electrical controller that does not feed back to the car.
So, I paid the $1k and also ordered the genuine module and wiring kit from my home dealer ($800).
In total $1800 instead of $3600.
I will ne very happy for my dealer to SVM the car in around 3 months when I get home, but meanwhile I will perservere and try to get this coded so my trailer lights can work.
I reckon I have all of the right coding except for the 03 ABS and the 13 Auto distance reg so I will focus on that. I'll shout out on the local forum (ozaudi) to see if there is anyone with a recent towbar equipped car.

Neil, we should have something for you later today - please do not blindly use a coding from another car. Especially with the trailer retrofits there are some market specific settings which differ for example for North America and other English speaking countries around the world.

Worked for us at Euro Car Upgrades Australia. Q5 is without the ACC but the ABS coding seems correct.

Thanks for the detailed list of what you already changed. Because this ABS controller requires a special procedure we will need to get you a label file before coding can be completed. If you don't hear back from us today don't hesitate to bump this back up.

After further review I don't think this isn't a matter of sending you a quick redirect for the ABS. For that reason I would like you to try using Security Access 61378 followed by 309D1801 in the ABS controller.

If new coding is rejected please try to re-code it to the original value of 301D1801. If the original coding is rejected my special procedure comments apply.

If the new coding is accepted please clear all DTCs, run another scan and post the data so we can make sure it doesn't require any additional fine tuning.

Feedback would be appreciated either way.

Excellent! I think I confused this with the facelifted B8 and 4G chassis modules where a special song and dance needs to take place before coding is accepted. Those are 4 Byte Long coded modules as well.

Since the new coding accepted with a simple SA code you should be good to go. I'll make sure Sebastian sees this so he can let us know if any other bits in that ABS controller need to be tweaked.

I'm writing with nearly the exact issue as user AnDyTnT. Same results, but unable to code adaptation to modules 01 and 03. Could someone shed some light as to what step I should take next? My 2013 Q5 2.0 TFSI is the American version, which I added the Audi factory trailer hitch to. I'm due for technical inspection in the next few weeks and would really appreciate some guidance.
