I always liked this one when it was new because it was the remake of the GTO song.

    GTI's that jump!

^ That was actually a cool little car.
The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

Yep, my mother had one way back when that had a VW 1.7 liter engine, complete with valve-stem seals that leaked like mad starting at around 30,000 miles. At the time, nobody really had a handle on why those engines started burning oil like mad or that it was a relatively straightforward fix, so she traded it in for a new Scirocco.

This one has stuck in my mind for years. A 1990 Plymouth Acclaim they crashed into a wall. First live airbag deployment and they used an off the shelf car.

Dude gets out and walks away, and I can assure you his bell has rung.

Here's an article about the commercial:

I don't remember the engine codes for those, but it was basically longer-stroke version of the 1.6l 8V gasoline engine that has both the intake and exhaust ports on the back of the head that ubiquitous in on VWs in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
