Does anyone have the early 1980's VW commercial with the GTI police car and officer saying to not speed through his part of North Carolina?????

Andy: this is a little off-topic, but in an amazing coincidence of happenstance (hmm.. tautology?), I went from seeing the video below (which came from a post on Golfmk7.com) to viewing the 80s movies in your thread.

What can I say? Car advertisements certainly have come a very long way since the early days! But, I guess that it's in the eye of the viewer as to whether the way that we advertise cars now can be called "progress"!

Not sure that the "birth" of Audi's RS 3 can legitimately be likened to the procreation of a child - complete with birthing liquids, no less!! But perhaps Audi owners do see these metal objects as surrogate human beings. Disturbing, or enlightened....??

Don't forget that some of those Omni's were VW-powered!
Yep, my mother had one way back when that had a VW 1.7 liter engine, complete with valve-stem seals that leaked like mad starting at around 30,000 miles. At the time, nobody really had a handle on why those engines started burning oil like mad or that it was a relatively straightforward fix, so she traded it in for a new Scirocco.

I don't remember the engine codes for those, but it was basically longer-stroke version of the 1.6l 8V gasoline engine that has both the intake and exhaust ports on the back of the head that ubiquitous in on VWs in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
