That was a stone axe motor. Not pretty to look at but pulled the A1 Rabbit just fine.

Back in the day, I knew a Dodge racer that gave me some of his cast-off 1.7 performance parts for my Mk1 Rabbit (Golf) with the pathetic 1488cc engine. Not only did they make it pull the A1 just fine, I could crack the windshield on command with my throttle foot.....

Aside from the original valve stem seal problem, those engines were stone-axe durable/reliable too.

I tried DAMNED hard to get my Mum to buy a Mazda Cosmo, when I was young and silly.

Actually, If I haD lots of money, and enough space I'd find a tidy one Still!

The Vids aren't really cheesy, but the cars are VERY 80's

"Lotaly Turbo" :D

A friend of mine sent this to me a week ago. A good trip down 1980's memory lane...lol. I not only remember the cars well, I had a couple Rabbits in highschool (late 80's). Both were 2-door gas models.

Does anyone have the early 1980's VW commercial with the GTI police car and officer saying to not speed through his part of North Carolina?????

I finally found it!

Well, I don't know about everywhere, but you just watch your step in this part of North Carolina..... :D

Oh yeah!

Amazing to think that over a dozen years before VW/Audi offered the 150hp 1.8T, you could get a 150hp turbo 1.8 in a friggin' Cavalier. The engine was made in Brazil ... wonder if it was by the same company that made the engine for my 2003 MINI Cooper S?

^^^ Bahahaha!

Sounds like it was about as dependable as expected, at least. That steering wheel, though! Who would leave a test car like that?

Those US bumper requirements made a lot of nice/interesting cars really ugly!

Edit: They drove it in the rain too... it would have dissolved about 3 days after the test finished :D

Fun fact: my old Fiat X1/9 was basically Fiat Strada guts, just all pushed to the back:

Almost certainly not a turbo, but I remember my 1984 GTI (which was no slouch) getting seriously dusted by the GLHS version of one of these:

Anyway, when was the last time anybody saw one of these?

I took that picture today!

Not a commercial for a car, but certainly cheesy, and featuring a mk1 Lotus Esprit:
