1998 A4 Avant 2.8 AHA 5-speed 218,000 mi.


Two weeks ago the car would die (only when hot) when going to an idle. This was infrequent and only would happen once or twice in a day. Seemed just like a typical vacuum leak and I would get a 16839 (P0455 EVAP Gross leak).

Could not find any visible leaks, worked on the gas cap and N80 .... problem went away for a few days but now has come back as either a 16487 MAF too high or too low as shown this attached scan as a 16201 MAF too low. I will clean and if that doesn't work replace the MAF as my next step. But before I do that (now that I have VCDS-Lite working) I want to log the MAF Measuring blocks before I do anything.

So here's my question ..... Just where do I find information on what my MAF readings should be and under what conditions do you do the test?
I see that measuring block 02 shows MAF readings 3.0 at idle, what other blocks should I be looking at?

After clearing codes yesterday I took a 3.5 hour trip over the mountains to Redding and back. The car ran flawlessly on the trip except for when stopped in a construction zone for about 5 min it started to die at an idle, I kept the revs up till we got rolling and drove another another 4-5 hrs with out a problem. Below is the results of my autoscan after that trip.

MAF readings around 3.0 g/s at idle is reasonable. You're looking at an intermittent problem here; the ECU knows it too. Logging the MAF values may show you that it goes "offline" when it does, but that won't answer the question whether it's the MAF itself or a wiring/connection issue that's causing this. What you might want to do is to watch the MAF values while wiggling the wires at the MAF sensor with the engine at idle. Also check grounds and inspect the harness connector at the ECU.

Intake boot installed incorrect or torn underside due to worn motor mounts.

Check vent hose from VC to VC and back to plastic valve at TB because this is common on AHA and ATQ.

There is also a firmware update for this module.

Intake boot is installed correctly and no tears, motor mounts were leaking and replaced.

Replaced the vent hoses and valve a long time ago, they were cracked rotted and broken from the heat retained by those stupid engine covers which also rot the rubber vacuum hoses. Those covers are right where they should be ....in a box in the attic.

I'm interested in more information about the firmware update (how is it done etc).
