I posted over at Vortex also. Used my new VagCom today and found codes that point to a bad ignition switch. No issues except doors locking and unlocking, MFD blinking every once in awhile. No problems starting or anything like that. Windshield wipers will "bump" up a notch when I turn the car off.
Car is new to me, has 29K original miles, no aftermarket parts what so ever. Prob. the reason why original owner passed it off to me...:(
I don't have to do anything but I'm worried about electrical fire or creating a bigger issue...

If it truly is the electrical part of the switch does anyone know if I have to pull the wheel or can I get at it with small screwdrivers if I get the cover off the bottom of the column?

I'm wanting to get a Bentley manual but...the car is an 09 with the TSI motor and the manual for the 09 only has the FSI motor. Should I get a 2010+ manual?

Here is the basic readout on the codes that would not clear. I had codes in other areas and am driving it today hoping they clear up..

Umm... that's interesting. Rather than the ignition switch itself, I'd take the covers off the steering column and start looking for wires rubbing and chafing, for insulation damage. Somewhere you have intermittent shorting between the ignition switch wiring and wiper control stalk wiring.

Re: repair manuals, I'm not sure which Bentley manual might be right for you, but you can go to http://erwin.vw.com and buy a $35 day pass, and then download and locally save all the PDF-based repair manuals they have for your car.

Jason

Are the covers difficult to figure out how to take off.? I have no experience with VW's except older(81 diesel caddies) The wiring in this car looks brand new as the car has only 29k on it and not even an aftermarket radio. Nothing looks to be hacked under the dash area at all. i even removed the instrument panel looking for a squeak and it looked untouched in every way.
It's more than just the wipers, the doors lock and unlock sometimes, MFD blinks sometimes...vag com definitely pointed to the switch and even in the wiki it listed all of the codes to expect and all of them are there...
I am searching with no results to find someone who has just replaced the ignition switch without removing the steering wheel. The mechanical side of the switch is perfect...it should be...29k
Thanks for the Erwin heads up. I'd rather just buy a book but have no clue which one.

The wipers bump up to alternate the parking position.

My '06 Touran does it. Sometimes they stay where they are, and other times, they bump up to change the angle the blades sit on the glass. The also alternate parking position when the wipers are switched off. one time with the blade angle down, every second time with the blade angled up. If you use the intermittant feature, it will sometimes move after that is turned off too.

Change ignition switch and mini harness to it immediately.
I have seen a few cars burn right to the ground from this after being called to an investigation for observation.
It maybe under campaign or service action.......... so check with VWGoA.

Post the entire scan please.

Jack, okay...wow! Welcome to owning a newer VW...maybe I should go retrieve the 81 diesel caddy still in my dad's garage!

Do you think it's safe to be parked in my garage?

Is this something the VW dealer would have found with their equipment under their normal servicing. I checked into the history at the dealership it was purchased and maintained. The service advisor said it was clean and only had a rattle they could not find...:banghead:

I've only put about 600 miles on the car and the electrical gremlins have been there since I purchased it. I read around forums and found that these types of things and VW's went hand in hand.

Can the switch and harness be replaced without taking the steering wheel off?

Here is the complete scan result:

Andy, yes went thru that. I'm new to VW and Vagcom. Would you bother checking value blocks like it says or just replace the harness and the switch. I've got every code listed in the special notes. I'm still trying to get some guidance on whether or not the steering wheel has to be removed to do this...I know it would have to if I'm replacing the mechanical part of the ignition switch but that is working fine. The switch is like $35, not sure on the harness.

I've not done one in that generation of cars, but even if VW says you have to remove the steering wheel, don't take necessarily that as gospel. When we did the one in our 2001 Eurovan many moons ago, the repair manual called for doing from above, but it was much quicker to do it from underneath. The catch was getting one screw out and back in; doing that required some creative use of tools.

Affirmative Uwe.......

The ignition switch/mini harness can in fact be done without the removal of all the required details in the repair manual.

Dental pick is helpful............

OP if it was my car with those codes displayed.
I would not park the car in the garage unless the battery was disconnected.

Even cars that sit in my shop.........policy is disconnected battery or it goes outside.

The only two switches I would use are Genuine Made in Germany or Czech. Republic, all others are suspect........

Be sure to use the unit with harness for separate reader coil which is a Y with isolated connector to ignition switch itself.

Considering the price of the switch, it would make sense to try it. Especially that this kind of problems are hard to pinpoint and time consuming.

Do you know where to get the mini harness and the appropriate switch? VW? Before I received your email I ordered one thru a local foreign car parts place. The counter guy said it is a VEMO...?

Not clear on the separate reader coil, which is a Y.... Can you elaborate. If I could find a reputable mechanic around my area I'd just take it to them...Hence I'm doing it myself. I'm accustomed somewhat to GM's and Toyo's but really never have to work on electrical issues with those cars.
Does this mini harness have to run thru firewall and to all the target connections? Also, can you recommend a manual for this 2009 with the TSI motor. Or would you just use the Erwin deal with VW?

Thanks for the information. I took the cheapo back and picked up the revised one at VW. I would have bought the one thru ebay but I need this thing fixed for next week. I'm going to try to do it by just removing the trim pieces. Not sure I'll make it happen but will give it a run. Maybe do a video so others can see what is involved as there is not one anywhere I can find on an MK5+. I appreciate all the help!

FWIW my 09 Jetta exhibited the same symptoms a few years ago (faults + locking/unlocking) and a switch under warranty cured it.

Eric,
TY for the confirmation. Now if I can figure out how to change it without opening up a can of mess! I'm trying to find someone who has done one personally on an MKV. Some say the steering wheels and more has to come off yet others say it can be done by just removing the trim....which I've never done on this car or any other VW.

Yeah you don't "have" to remove the steering wheel but it does make it slightly more accessible. I've done quite a few if these with the same fault codes as you have listed and it cured all of them.
