My VW New Beetle (2004) Cabriolet has an airbag warning problem.

My main question is, do the fault codes below indicate a problem only with the crash sensors or could the problem be elsewhere in the air bag circuit?

2 Faults Found:
01738 - Crash Sensor for Front Airbag; Drivers Side (G283)
004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent
01739 - Crash Sensor for Front Airbag; Pass. Side (G284)
004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent

Well the scan says the they are sporadic......
I would get WD and trace those specific circuits with DVOM and visually inspect for water damage/corrosion.

There was an update or recall for the front crash sensors. Call the dealer up with your VIN and see if the car is covered under this.

Thank you for your replies/suggestions.

I've scanned the car several times since I bought it in February, each time I can clear the fault code and it will stay clear until I've driven for 5 or more minutes, then the faults return so I suppose you could say that the fault is constantly intermittent.

One thing I'd like to establish is whether VCDS says the fault is with both crash sensors because they really are faulty, or is it the case that something else in the circuit is behaving intermittently but that VCDS only reports on the status of the front crash sensors. I'm surprised that both sensors have faults and I think it's possible that the fault is with something common to both front crash sensors such as the Airbag Controller. Does VCDS specifically check any parameters of the Airbag Controller?

I'm in the UK and from what I've read on other forums VW did not issue a recall for the airbag crash sensors.

VCDS doesn't check anything. VCDS simply asks the control module: "Got any fault codes"? The control module itself does all the fault checking and stores fault codes if it thinks it's appropriate to do so. Unfortunately, we are not privy to the exact logic that control modules use to check for such faults.

Thanks Uwe.

Can VCDS report back to me any parameters stored in the airbag control module or will it only store fault codes relating to the airbags?

VCDS can report what the module is willing to divulge. Newer modules usually have "Freeze Frame Data" associated with fault codes, which MAY provide clues about what caused the fault. Older modules like yours do not have this capability.

I finally accepted that I would have to remove the front of my beetle to get to the problematic crash sensors, so I now can access the sensors. They are connected to the loom with a yellow connector which has a violet tab/locking mechanism. Can anyone following this thread please explain how I release the connector in order to swap the crash sensor - believe me I've tried but I don't want to break it, there must be a special way to do it.

Thanks.

I've worked out how it works. The violet coloured part is sprung and needs to be pushed away from the cable and towards the sensor itself, almost as though you are trying to push the connector on to the sensor. The violet part will slide a few mm and eventually it will release a latch and eject the yellow part of the connector. When refitting the yellow connector you can tell that it is fully home because it moves the violet coloured part away from the sensor and back to it's original position.

Just to conclude this thread, before spending money on 2 new front crash sensors I checked the yellow connectors under each front seat and checked the yellow connector to the airbag controller, all connector contacts were clean and free from corrosion so to a certain extent checking these things was a waste of time.

I purchased two new VW front crash sensors and fitted them, the fault code has not returned and the airbag warning light now goes off and stays off after the ignition on self check.

Thanks for wrapping things up -- it's always nice to find out what the final fix turns out to be. Also, this:

... before spending money on 2 new front crash sensors I checked the yellow connectors under each front seat and checked the yellow connector to the airbag controller, all connector contacts were clean and free from corrosion so to a certain extent checking these things was a waste of time.

is never a waste of time. The troubled component isn't always going to be the first thing you look at. There's always a process, a search. And, a quick check of the wiring and connectors is a very reasonable step before replacing expensive components.

so to a certain extent checking these things was a waste of time.

It doesn't work that way. It is when someone tried nothing and are all out of ideas.... then time is wasted. Not all of our fixes are the first thing we try/suggest, but we (Ross Tech) tend to spot patterns.

As do some of the other fine folks that hang out here who fix these cars for a living on a daily basis. :)

The recall on these sensors does not apply to UK vehicles - believe me I've been there!

VW UK seem happy to make owners pay for what VW everywhere else in the world acknowledges to be a problem.

The original sensors were part number 1F0 909 606 and they were superseded by 6Q0 909 606H.

It's worth noting that if you're in the UK and you order a replacement sensor you're well advised to specify the new part number otherwise there is a real risk that the dealer will shift the (known problematic) sensor on to you, after all nowhere else in the world uses them.

I did mine recently and thankfully the airbag light stays out!
