How to confirm Mileage, ECU is stock, resetting OBD counter

hi,

would anyone know how to do the following for the golf gti mk7:

1. confirm if the mileage showing is the cluster has not been tampered
2. how to check if the ecu has not been tuned or altered
3. is there away to reset the obd counter when modifying the ecu to make it untraceable

I don't know of any way except to judge whether the wear and tear on the rest of the car is commensurate with the odometer reading.

On any turbo engine, log requested manifold pressure and compare the peak values with those from a known stock car.

You mean the flash counter? Depends on the techniques used by the tuner. Personally, I wouldn't put any faith in that counter.

I know the dealers machine can check if its been flashed while its in for warranty work that way they make the claim void.

The dealer's tool may compare the CVN (see generic OBD-II specs for Mode 9) (or a similar checksum) against their database, which knows the CVN for each ECU software part number and version. In principle one could use a similar technique with VCDS; get the CVN in generic OBD-II mode and compare it with that from a known stock ECU of the same part number and software version.

However... At least some ECU tuners are aware of this and probably have the skill to fake this out, by having non-stock software return a stock CVN. After all, it's just another checksum and they must already "fix" all manner of checksums in what they do, otherwise they tunes won't be functional at all.

Sadly in newer DSG transmissions (DSG6 in MQB platform for example) it is not possible to check this mileage. Is this due to change from VW and measuring value is not present or could this still be implemented in VCDS.
Transmission details of DSG that does not have this measuring value (or any other regarding this mileage). It does have some mileage data, but not total mileage.

I don't see an obvious solution to implementing this. My guess is that it's in there somewhere, but since it's not documented in the ODX data available for the module, finding it would be the proverbial needle in a haystack problem.

Many of the DSGs have "Snapshot" Measuring Values which are stored when a DTC is triggered, so even if there isn't a specific "Control Module Mileage" value - you will likely be able to see some data which may help with further investigation. In addition, you can always use the search function in advanced measuring values and look for "mileage", "odometer" or similar wordings and you'll likely find some useful hits. Obviously, without an Auto-Scan and seeing which modules are actually in the car, there isn't much more help we could provide.

Hey all,

I'm new to this forum.

I'm also interested in finding a way to validate the mileage shown on the instrument cluster. I understand that apart from the EDC15-16 check (-> some diesels only), there are really no options to have a reliable reading of the mileage.

But there are quite good guesstimations based on the overall operation time of certain other ECUs (head units, climate control units etc.) that store such information. E.g. some Audi MMI units have an optime counter in their hidden service menus.
Assuming a typical average Bordrechner speed of a car of around 35..60 km/h overall (assuming city and highway averages), one can calculate a 'virtual' mileage that, if much more (e.g. 20% more) than the indicated mileage, is sign that the car reverses a lot.

Now, I'm looking for the same type of information on other VW brands like Skoda and VW. No mileages just some operation time info on head units or other ECUs that could store it.

Could such data be read out read out with VCDS? Or could this be possible in future releases?

I assume, within the VW group, head units are often re-used so there not too many models to cover.
Like the EDC counter, this would prove nothing but gives an indication for double-checking.

I don't recall seeing Hobbs Meter type values anywhere, but I haven't really looked for them either.

The results from the Ross-Tech fleet of cars would be interesting no doubt. They don't spend much time reversing, but they do spend a lot of time connected to Shore Power with the ignition switched on while we do development and testing.

Finding any sources would be superb!

Car dealers where I live (Eastern EU) are blackbelt pros in faking and lying so any clue that the story they want to sell is made up, could prevent buying a lemon (here, lemon = can't be tracked what was serviced and when, what to service next and when). On EDC cars, I've seen 200k+ km reversing records between two inspections, the dealer lying without turning a hair when asking about it (odometer tampering is a crime but no one can prove who did it)... Here, people still remember the older Eastern bloc cars that needed major repairs just after 60-80k kms, after 120k they were considered FUBAR. The low mileage as a benchmark of good deal/reliability remained, so <100k is a selling point, >200k makes a price breakdown. But these cars still look and feel good, so the odometer stops rolling on used cars near 200k, no matter if 5 or 10 years old. They wouldn't buy a 300k car no matter how good it is or how genuine the service history... Any signs of a rollback would invalidate all statements about the servicing history, belt jobs etc. and it becomes the part of the deal (some major repairs assumed and discounted from the price), something dealers or sellers don't want. Since most cars are manual here (auto trannies are avoided due to repair costs and reliability issues), we have one less option to get info about the mileage.

Btw, knowing that older DSGs still contains this little clue, I might consider those cars too.

(p.s. I took part in some ECU software development and the ECU I was working on, contains such a counter.

Some tools allow you to send hex command directly to module.......so do not rely on any digital signature in the modern vehicles
