Morning all,

Brand new to operating VCDS myself as of yesterday so not completely confident yet but did an auto scan and this is what I came out with. I'd known I'd had this fault code for a while and have been searching and searching for info but have only found one other case and it was in japanese and didn't have a resolution. I'm trying hard how to read these logs properly but I'm very much still learning!

The main fault is with the rear spoiler and this has done some damage to the mechanism, it will just keep going up and down until it goes into fault, part of the plastic shaft support has broken off.

I'd decided to strip this down and that's why I bought the vcds cable, once I got inside I decided there was very little I could do as the limit switches weren't really accessible/removable like on the older spoiler mechanisms. There seems to be one limit switch/proximity sensor at the drive end of the motor which gets the fully extended position from the white sprocket. I am only just getting around these current flow diagrams so I don't know how to read if this is F135/F136. On the none drive end of the motor is possibly the other limit switch but I can't be sure, it's a bit beyond me. Have attached a pic of this end.

The other 2 faults relating to the filler cap and glass break sensors can be cleared.

Has anyone got any ideas on this, one local independent told me i needed a 'sensor' for £477 exc labour (when i originally had the car scanned a month ago) which was too vague for me and he didn't give me a part no. or anything. Didn't push him as he didn't seem to keen and wanted me to go back to audi for good will, but trust me I've tried that and they're not having it so I'm out on my own.

I found a fairly reasonable used A7 drive unit on ebay and this is being shipped from Germany to the UK, i'm a bit unsure whether I should just hook it up in case the fault isn't in the original unit and is actually in the controller.

Any help would be much appreciated!!! I realised after I'd boxed it all back up I should have done a continuity test from the limit switch cables back to the controller but I thought I'd wait to see what came here before I strip it down again as there might be something completely different ongoing here

I have already solved the other fault with the antenna open circuit. Audi quoted me £450 to fix by giving me a new back windscreen. It cost me £15 for some conductive silver paint and insulation tap, everything is working well now! Can you tell why I won't go back to Audi yet!!!

Some pics of the mechanism as found and the auto-scan below, apologies if the photo's are huge, i've never had to embed a url before:

Welcome to the forum. Great first post - by the way.

I'm struggling to see the limit switch at the white sprocket. Does the wiring diagram show the wire colours going to F135/F136 - or just thin 'internal' wires?

I'm struggling to see the limit switch at the white sprocket. ....

You are wrong
There is no mechanical END of Switch
Look on motor connector
Motor have magnet , can you see hall sensor close to magnet ?
this is "end of switch" ... but electronic

Adaptation of this kind of unit is this same as Electric Rear Lid.
No matter position you assembly it , simple start adaptation from any position, motor will start run, spoiler will start move up, and when is END, controller will recognize higher motor current power
Do this same to the bottom position, and controller will count magnet "steps"
this is how he know right position .

You have 4 wires to motor
2 - power
2 - signal

Ah OK, I thought that was maybe some kind of magnetic switch on the end, a bit like a pulse counter or encoder i suppose, I see how that works now, I guess there's no way of me testing it that is working as it will just give a voltage signal back to the controller and it would be quite difficult to do that anyway.

So any idea what the block with 2 wires going to it next to the white sprocket and also something built into the white sprocket that looks like a magnet to activate a proximity switch. Seems to be a bit conicidental that this seems to be lined up at fully extended.?? It was really different to get a photo off because it was tucked in at the back and that made it difficult for me to see it properly

Are we allowed to post current flow diagrams on here?? Maybe if i posted a snapshot then you could help me understand it a bit better??

Thanks for your responses.

Small snippets showing only the portions relevant to the problem are OK; I believe they fall under "fair use". Entire multi-page wiring diagrams, no.

Plastic welder ( glorified soldering iron ) can make this into a very cheap repair.

Once the gear is secure to see the count to the reluctor ( as stepper )...... the unit will see its base position and stop or be able to be adapted.

A tool like this........

http://www.harborfreight.com/80-watt-iron-plastic-welding-kit-60662.html

After done welding ..........consider building a metal girdle or cage to handle the weak torque area.

I can definitely repair the bearing part that has snapped off no problem, it doesn't seem like there's much load on the area (when the car is stationary anyway) It is getting it to behave normally and stop running up and down continuously every time i start the car, maybe this is where I'm too much of a novice. tonight I have disconnected from the control module in the boot just until i get a resolution.

The relevant current flow diagram showing the 2 switches is below, any help reading it is appreciated, seem to recall the wires going to the switch near the sprocket were yellow and brown:

Do you have the 6 wires between J223 and the spoiler as showed on the WD ?

Here is a guess of the meaning of pins on J223 (you have to check with DVOM and scope):
On ECU (J223) there is an 18 pin connector.
T18b/5 + motor
T18b/2 Ground Motor

T18b/10 F135 ?
T18b/11 F136 ?
T18b/17 Hall sensor ? (5V?)
T18b/18 Hall sensor ? (5V?)

The problem would be either switches (or hall sensor?) or wires or connector, somewhere from ECU to rear spoiler

You can copy this file to \Ross-Tech\VCDS\Labels\User
Check the functions of spoiler in MWB 092 (Place your mouse over MWB fields!). I hope I have made them right.

Check if the showed Selective Output Test is right (I am not 100% sure, it is not tested).

The Spoiler behaviour you have (going up and down) is described in SSP483 page 19.

You can use erwin for WD and SSP.

Thanks very much NEtech!! Really appreciate your time.

I will give that file a go and let you know. I'll strip it all down as soon as I get a chance but will revert about the output test asap.

Unfortunately I don't have a scope and my electric knowledge isn't great, I'm a marine engineer (mechanical) by trade so electrics can let me down!!! I'm limited to measuring voltages and continuity testing really

I managed to find the rest of that SSP that you mentioned, the other ones I had found online had been partial files. I think I need to sign up to this ERwin and get the full info from there rather than the programs I'm using just now.

Anyway I'll be back later with some info, thanks for your help.

now I see how that file works, thanks very much, it's excellent. I also found the scope function in the software, this whole thing is a bit of a learning curve for me, clicking through things I didn't really know what was what, haha. You must really know your stuff to be able to create a file like that

Anyway I found the following:

entering through measuring block 92 I was able to see the 4 fields as shown in the screen shots below.
Field 1 The LIN signal was jumping around all over the place, between approximately 25 and 200. The scope plot below shows field one.
Field 2, status switch E127, was also jumping around all the time even when not moving the spoiler.
Field 3 Status Switch F135/F136 changed value as the spoiler moved as you'd expect, I didn't witness the F135 change to a 0 or the F136 change to a 1 at any time whilst the spoiler was moving. The only number that did change was the final 1 and that is not on the key.
Field 4 showed the faults as expected.

I am going to play with this again later as I ran out of time just now but please let me know if you have any thoughts.

Hello NETech, I'd like to understand this part. so... by copying/paste this file to VCDS labels user folder it will overwrite the actual file.clb is already there or, what do I have to do to load it into MWB 092? I do understand the purpose of it and I found it fantastico... that's is the beauty of VCDS, I just can't figure it out exactly how. thanks for your post.

If you copy a new file into the Labels folder, it will over-write the old file.

It looks like Niels made some enhancements to that file for you. :)

The original file is still there, the file I uploaded is copied to the User directory, so there for it is the one used by VCDS.

what do I have to do to load it into MWB 092?
If you copy it to User directory you can go to MWB 092, but you only see interesting data, if you have an Audi A7 (or some other similar) with Spoiler :)
I guess it could be in the next update, but it is important to have some verification of the values, and I do not have an Audi A7 with rear Spoiler ;)

Oh Ok, cool, thanks ... questions again: by " you can see interesting data" you mean this info box will be filled with more information? another question How can VCDS switch over label files?

Any thoughts on the data I pulled yesterday? The new spoiler drive unit has arrived this morning and I will probably fit it tomorrow and do some wiring checks (pretty fantastic service from audi-teile-24 on ebay, I didn't order till after 3 on Friday from Germany and it is here in the UK this morning)

Anyone tell me how I can do a specific output test on the spoiler?

Please check if there is correlation for field 2 / 3 / 4 (forget field 1) from my explanation when you activate buttons, sensor, spoiler etc.
Test if the only selective output test works, else try Sequential test, see Ross-Tech Manual how.

Morning,

well had another go this morning using doing function test etc. I can't really get get anything to correlate properly apart from the 4th field, that definitely shows the fault and permanently shows the spoiler as defective (i.e 0000001) even when the fault codes are cleared. I don't see much action in the 3rd field whilst operating the spoiler, and the values for the second field, i.e the switch are continuously jumping around.

I fitted the replacement drive unit i received yesterday and this has made no difference so the fault is still present,:(:(:(:( I'm at a bit of a loss now as to how to proceed.

Is it more likely that the fault is in the control module? If I order a new control module from ebay, is it just a case of swapping it out or will it need coding? is this something I can do or would I need audi to do it??

The fault for the fuel fill cap short to ground is also appearing again, this couldn't be causing an error with the spoiler could it where it goes to the central convenience module??

Heeelllllpppp please, only got a few days now before I go back to work for a month and need to decide whether to send the new drive unit back to germany for a refund, my instinct is telling me I should.

It does not sound like you can do measurement/fault finding, is that right ?
You have to do that. Measure from wiring diagram, positive, Ground to (J223) etc.
Take the T18 connector off, then find the two wires for the Motor, put Plus and Ground, to test if is working, change the wires, then Motor should change direction.
When you press the Spoiler button (E127), there is LIN communication from (J393) to (J223) telling (J223) to send power to the Motor and then (J223) is checking states of switch/hall element for regulation.

Can you see an reaction in MWB, when pressing the Button ?
Please make Control Module Maps and logs in MWB 092, but the states are important (button pressed or not, spoiler up or down etc.)!
Where you able to do Output test ?
If the "new" Spoiler is also going up and down, if I would say the switch signal are destroyed between (J223) and the spoiler (have you checked the cables) or it is (J223).

It would be nice with MWB 092 measurement logs from a A7 with a working Spoiler in different postions.

Well I'm trying to learn......this is all very new. I know the motor is working and getting the power as it is behaving as expected in the SSP. It is the signal from the hall sensor and other switch I don't know how to check. I agree if the new spoiler is doing the same that the fault is in the cables or J223, I tried to do a continuity test of the wiring whilst doing the spoiler changeout this morning but had a bit of trouble with my multimeter not reaching far enough so didn't get much further. I need to make up a longer cable and get some finer probes. In the meantime I have ordered a used J223, should this be a straight swap?

Below is a video of the MWB reaction when pressing E127, you will hear immediately when press the button that the fault alarm comes on, I have continued to video until the spoiler stops moving. You can see the reaction.

Here are the control module maps
https://www.dropbox.com/s/avyt1gsrg42m3nm/46-4H0-907-064-BN.PLA?raw=1
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ubjdzg5f1q7bgqf/46-4H0-907-064-BN.PLB?raw=1

and the 3 MWB logs:

1. Spoiler up:https://www.dropbox.com/s/s5mwhcsg1wd07sf/Log-Spoiler%20up.txt?raw=1
2.Button pressed: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m8kwpwml9llmsym/Log-Button%20pressed.txt?raw=1
3. Spoiler down:https://www.dropbox.com/s/kcl5p01sr1cjg91/Log-spoiler%20down.txt?raw=1

And of course if I get this working as normal I will then post the control maps for a working unit too!!

Thanks for your continued help.
