Is the dealer lying to me?

Long story short, I've had an ongoing fault with the interior monitoring sensor for my alarm. It's now been to the dealer 3 times to get it repaired under warranty, but every time the car has just come back with the same fault again even though on each occasion the dealer says they have fixed the problem.

On the last two visits (6 weeks apart) the dealer says the software on the central electronics control module was updated on both occasions. I find it hard to believe that 2 software updates were released in such a short space of time, and before and after VCDS scans of that module seem to indicate otherwise (i.e. they're lying through their teeth).

Can someone please look at the scans below and confirm if there have or have not been any control module software updates to my car. I can see that fault codes have been cleared based on the date of the re-occurrence of the fault in the latest scan but as far as I can see that is all they've actually done.

This is the scan that I did on the car before it went into the dealer back in January for its first diagnosis and warranty repair of the fault...

And this is a scan I did this morning immediately after I got the car back home after being at the dealer to have the same fault diagnosed and repaired for a 3rd time (which they say was fixed but clearly it still hasn't been)...

BCM shows identical part numbers, component data, revision, and coding in both scans. Ergo, it hasn't been updated.

What's interesting is that in your second scan, the subsystem:

    Code:
    Subsystem 3 - Part No: 1P0 951 171 A
       Component: Innenraumuebe 010 4974
       Coding: 000000
Is completely missing. My guess is that part is wonky and needs to be replaced, but it wouldn't hurt to do basic electrical trouble-shooting on it first, i.e. verify it's getting power and ground as it should.

    -Uwe-
The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

1P0-951-171-A comes up as an "ultrasound sensor", I believe that will be the G273 in the wiring diagrams. 3 wires on the sensor:

    T4e/1 = power (fuse SC17, 5A)
    T4e/2 = ground
    T4e/3 = LIN

I'm 98% sure I'm correct with this info. If not, I'll edit this post as needed.

As I suspected then, they told me porkies.

Yes, the subsystem 3 item (Innenraumuebe 010 4974) missing from the scan is the interior monitoring sensor which is what is showing as faulty (and subsequently missing) in the VCDS scans...

The dealer claimed that on the second visit they replaced this module with a new one but I only have their word on that and no actual proof because I didn't make a note of the serial number of that part before it went into the dealers and because it is warranty work I don't get a detailed invoice of what was done or what parts were replaced - they just tell you verbally. Based on the fact they lied to me about updating the control module software I'm not sure whether to believe them about replacement of the interior monitoring sensor module with a new one either.

It was after coming back from it's second visit that the subsystem 3 item then seems to be missing from any subsequent VCDS scans I've done. I have re-seated the plug to the module and I have also gone as far as opening up the interior monitoring sensor unit and with the plug connected, I have check continuity between the back of each pin in the plug to the corresponding solder joints on the circuit board and there is continuity on every pin. What I haven't checked is continuity through to the other end of the loom where wires go to one of the BCM connectors. To do this I will need to locate the BCM (I think it might be behind the glovebox but I'm not 100% sure without pulling it all apart). The car is under warranty anyway so this is something the dealer should be doing but I guess they're just too lazy and can't be bothered.

With the build date being 02/2008, I seriously doubt they replaced it - or they replaced it with one they had in stock. Even though it's warranty work, you should still get stuff in writing, of course since you don't pay for it you don't get the invoice but that doesn't mean you don't get a proper repair order and a receipt for what has been done when you get the car back. Somebody needs to teach your dealer some manors...

Sadly many European dealers seem to treat warranty cases like they are a problem for them, realistically they could make money on those if they just handled them right.

    Hi Gary,

PQ35 Golf based BCMs live under the Driver's side of the dash on our VW models so take a peek near the pedals for a guy that looks like:

View from the OBD2 connector where you can sorta see the BCM white sticker:

.. either way, based on that 2008 production date of the controller pictured I would guess that thing is original.

Not only European, USA is the same. Reasons are:

    1. there is a lot of BS on warranty work (following GFF to the T, sending diagnostic reports, waiting for authorization, etc),

    2. warranty jobs pay much less than regular work and you cannot con the manufacturer .

Also, like in this case, warranty jobs are hard diagnostic cases and there is not so much diagnostic data yet (new car).

So, the modus operandi is to sell the customer a line of BS until he / she gets the message and goes away .

Me and my Volvo XC90, 10 (if not more) trips to the dealer, looooot of stuff replaced . Took a loooot of arm twisting though.

Thanks Jef. I'll do some voltage tests which I haven't actually done yet. I'm not really sure why I didn't think about doing that when I was doing the continuity checks. I'll also track down the location of that 5 amp fuse and check that is intact as well.

Yes, I getting more of a feeling that I've been royally shafted due to the dealer having no incentive to spend time chasing the cause of a problem that they are going to recoup minimal labour fees on.

Another interesting fact I should probably mention is that the car went into the dealer on 30th March. Close to the end of the day they rang me and said they needed to keep the car for another day (the 31st March) to continue their investigations. This caused me quite a bit of inconvenience but I agreed because I wanted the problem resolved. If you take a look at the scan I did this morning (second one in my first post) you will see that the error dates logged against the BCM are on 30th March at around mid-day suggesting they had at least cleared the fault codes on 30th and must have known that the fault was still present thus the need to keep my car for another day. If they continued their investigations on 31st then surely they would surely have performed another fault code clearing operation on that day which means I shouldn't be seeing any fault codes with dates against them that are prior to 31st. I would be willing to put money on the fact that they didn't even bother looking at my car on 31st at all (no time due to other bookings they could make a profit on, or no incentive to do so) so they probably just handed it back to me with the fault remaining and made up some BS story about having updated the control module software.

This particular dealer has certainly lost any future business from me now. I'll be using a different dealer to carry on the work that this one did (or rather didn't do). I also feel a strongly worded letter of complaint coming on.

Bingo! Thanks for this I've just located it exactly where you said it was. It's in the same place on a RHD SEAT Leon Mk2...

Now I just need to decide if I spend the time trying to do some wiring continuity and voltage fault finding myself or if I just leave it to another (hopefully better) dealer to do under warranty.

UK law is very similar to NZ law, I understand.

They only really have a limited number of attempts to repair/replace, and it must be in a reasonable timeframe. Check up on it...

...then request a replacement car, or a refund of the full purchase price

See how fast stuff happenes then

If I decide to do some continuity checks on the wiring loom between the BCM and the interior monitoring sensor, and also re-seating of the BCM plugs, is there anything I need to do or be aware of first? Can I safely just pull the plugs out of the BCM or do I need to disconnect the battery first (or perform some other procedure)? I don't want to upset the CAN BUS system in any way by doing something I would normally just do without even needing to think about on a standard (non CAN BUS) car.
