Greetings all!

Finally got around to buying the cable. With all the VWs I have in the family, it's silly I hadn't bought it earlier.

So, my daughter's '07 Beetle. Air bag and seat belt warning lights on. Also, the key fob will not lock/unlock remotely. Below is the auto-scan results:

I have a hunch the address 46 error is why the key fob won't work. As an aside, I did try reprogramming the fob, and the horn beeped as expected. Still won't work. What I don't know is where to start looking for this. Where on the front passenger side would I find what it's referring to? Does it mean the actual power actuator within the door?

It looks like the air bag light illuminates even with the seat belt switch error. I have no idea what is meant by "Implausible Signal", and that crops up with the clutch error as well. Doesn't seem to be any issue with the clutch operations. But I'm guessing that replacing the driver's seat belt switch will resolve the airbag light.

Any other suggestions on where I should be looking, based on this scan? I've been around cars a long time, and can usually fix almost anything if I know where to look.

Thanks!

The (E24) is the driver's seat belt latch, right there at your right side hip. These fail since the head mounted on top of flexable steel cables, thus the wiring that runs into the belt latch get stressed a lot from wiggling around. MVB 003.3 should show the belt latch status. Buckle up the driver's seat and wiggle it around and see if values change as you do so.

The F221 is a switch with the d̶r̶i̶v̶e̶r̶'̶s̶ passenger's door latch. I doubt it is the issue with your remote. If you did the relearn for the remote and the car gives you a confirmation of a learned value *beep* yet the remote still doesn't work, this tends to be a bad remote. I suspect the issue is how remotes have a rolling code each time you click a button. The rolling code is a predictable pattern and when you learn a remote, the car knows the starting point of the pattern. However, the remote may be screwing up the rolling code, so the next click of the remote is outside of what the car is expecting. My theory.... that and the government mind control.

*edit a small mistake... tinfoil cap was not fitted correctly.

Thanks for the insight Jef. I am curious though, you say the F221 switch is in the driver's door, while the scan says Front Passenger Side. Is the car confused about which side the steering wheel is on? :)

Should be fairly simple to replace that seat belt buckle, assuming I can get it from somewhere besides a dealer. I also am suspicious of the key fob being defective. Is there anything I can monitor in the system to observe what the car receives when the button is pushed? We only have one fob for the car, so I can't confirm if it works with anything else.

I wonder if that clutch switch error is why the cruise control won't engage? Just remembered that it didn't work right either...

Thanks!

Not really... if you have a friend with a VW that uses the same part number remote, try learning that remote to your car. You can have a single remote matched to 100 cars, the remote wouldn't know the difference, so it won't effect said friend's remote or vehicle.

The ECM has to be able to trust the clutch switch, that is one of the inputs the ECM will use to end operation of the cruise control. Note that there are two clutch switches, one for the first few mm of pedal travel to stop the cruise control, and a second for when the pedal is on the floor so the car knows it is safe to crank over.

Right, and an "implausible" signal would be the lower one being seen before or without the upper one.

Thanks to you both. Now I know where to look. Sounds like the upper clutch switch may be the culprit there.

My Passat has remote start, so I probably can't program that fob for her car. Maybe my son-in-law's 09 Jetta TDI would work. I know the Routan key won't :p

Found a thread in the Vortex forum about bad solder joints in the F221 switch. They were talking about much older models, but who knows. I've assembled many a Heathkit back in my youth, so I know my way around a solder gun. :D

Fix one, another appears

UPDATE: I disassembled the driver's seat belt latch per some instructions found on another forum. Found a broken wire as expected. Repaired break and cleared codes. Seat belt and air bag light out. Yahoo!

Removed right door panel, but discovered there's another metal panel beneath that covers the locking module. Since it was already 3PM, I didn't want to get into a lengthy disassembly so I closed it back up. After taking a drive to test my seat belt latch repair, I ran another auto-scan. The locking module error self-cleared! Go figure...

However, a new error popped up. Same module, but telling me I had "incorrect key programming". I had attempted to clear all the fobs yesterday, and today I was going to try the fob from my son-in-law's 09 Jetta. However, I can't get it to accept any changes now. When I first select code 1 to see the key count, it shows one, and the test & save buttons are enabled. If I change the number to zero or two, both test and save are disabled. I've tried to a number of times, disconnected and reconnected, rescanned, but I can't seem to do anything with the key fob now. Any ideas here? :banghead:

Between fixing the seat belt latch, enabling the aux in on the Jetta, and making some tweaks to my Passat, the VCDS cable has already paid for itself. Thanks for everything! :D

First thing I'd do is try to clear it again using Adaptation Channel 0.

OK, tried channel zero, but nothing happened. I notice something strange compared to when I've been tweaking my '14 Passat. When I'm in the Beetle 46 module, there's no "Do it!" button, only a test and save.

As I said, when I open the Coding section and select channel 1, the test and save button is enabled. It shows one fob assigned. If I change it to zero or two (my only two options) both the test and save buttons are disabled. If I leave it at one and click save, then hit the button on the fob, the horn beeps, but still won't unlock the door.

I was thinking on replacing the fob battery, as I have no idea how old it might be. Still, getting the beep acknowledgement makes me think it is communicating with the car. :banghead:

I think 2007 Beetle and 2009 Jetta remotes are different. Get remotes with the correct part number.

You saw this video???

I think you got 15 seconds to complete the procedure after you press SAVE (press lock / unlock on each remote).

Power door locks work with the button and / or the mechanical key ????

No I had not seen that video. Thanks!

I gave up on the Jetta fob. But I had followed the instructions from the video pretty much identical, except I believe I hit the unlock (not lock) button. I'll try it again just to be sure. However, I do get the honk acknowledgement from the car when I pushed the button on the fob. It just won't unlock the car. To your other question, yes the interior lock button will lock and unlock, as will using the key in the mechanical lock outside.

I'm feeling that there is nothing wrong with the remote. Probably its the drivers door latch or lock.

Can you log n post ALL MVBs in 46 Comfort system? Do it under 3 conditions: 1. all doors closed and locked, 2. all door closed but unlocked, 3. all doors open.

Thanks, Andy.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted my response. Sneaky little forum you have here. :)

I found a new battery in the cupboard this morning for the fob, so I'm going to replace it and give it another go. Since the interior lock switch works, and both doors will unlock using the key in the door, the electronics in the car seem to be communicating correctly. Just have to see why it won't accept the fob signal.

If it makes any difference, it stopped working when my granddaughter was playing with the fob outside the car range. She was likely pounding all the buttons one after another. I've heard that will cause issues, but was hoping I could reset it. We have two keys for the car, but only one is a fob. The other is the valet key I would imagine.

MVBs

OK, replaced the fob battery. Used Channel Zero to reset, then set channel one to one (any other number, test and save was grayed out). Saved, then hit a button on the fob. Car beeps, but fob still doesn't work. :banghead:

Attached are the MVBs requested by Andy. Whoops, I see I can't post attachments. So, I'll copy the results here.
