Hello Group!

Wondering if it's possible to disable the solar sensor (assuming that is what controls the dimming) on a 01 TT. basically, when it's bright out, the clock/odo seem to get very dim (headlights off) and was wondering if there is a fixed setting that would leave them at maximum brightness with the lights off, but would still be dimmable with the rheostat when the headlights are on for night driving.

autoscan from the other day

I'm quite doubtful that such a setting exists. That instrument cluster is a late 1990s design and doesn't have a great deal of flexibility. I've looked at what's documented and see nothing pertaining to the brightness of the clock or odometer.

well, bummer. I was hoping to disable that "feature" somehow. kind of annoying when it's bright out the cluster dims so much.

thank you for the reply!

Your problem is not solar sensors or anything like that . Your problem as all TT-s and other AUDI cars has is LCD is failing when is Hot outside. VW has same problem on older cars like MK4 and ETC.
I have replacement LCD and can fix it .

no, the cluster works fine. I can see the change if I go under a bridge or tree canopy. the display is dim in sunlight. oddly enough, all of my pixels in the center display still work 100%

I would say it goes from 100% to about 65-70% (just a guess based off rolling the rheostat)

Sensor is in Cluster on speed side next to 0 miles, and it works opposite way as you saying, when is light out it will get Brighter . Only thing I can think of, is someone put China LCD and those gets really mess up in Sunny days.
If you can take picture when is really happening and post here , I can tell you much .

I understand that, hence the aggravation. this is a low mileage car that has been in the family since new. 100% sure it's the original cluster. I will see if I can take a video so you can see what's going on. it's pretty annoying as you can imagine

vwparts: I have no idea how difficult it is to remove the clear plastic front from a TT instrument cluster, but if the LCD isn't failing and given the responses that there is likely no coding solution - perhaps you might consider a low tech approach?

as Jetta ,97 says - the illumination level for the cluster lights is normally modulated with cabin light levels by a small photo-transistor, which apparently is installed on the "speed side next to 0 miles" on a TT.

I'm trying to understand the relationship between cabin light-level and cluster illumination for a TT - but from your and Jetta ,97's description, it seems weird!!! Normally, this relationship is inverse meaning that as cabin light decreases, cluster illumination increases (as you both say), but at some point nearing dusk level - the opposite happens and the cluster illumination turns-off completely. In most countries, this is a road legal requirement because no cluster illumination gives the driver a visual prompt to turn-on the headlights (which normally causes the cluster lights to switch to 100% again). Does this happen on a NAR TT ?

Anyhow - my suggestion is to trick the photo-transistor into believing that the cabin light levels are dim - thereby increasing cluster illumination. A very low tech way of doing this is to simply place a piece of tape over (some of?) the photo-transistor. However, depending on the answer to my question above, total black-out might not be appropriate and it might be necessary to allow some light to fall on the body of the photo-transistor. So experimentation is necessary - but perhaps this is a consideration if there is no other answer and you are sufficiently motivated!

I haven't been able to get a decent video. DV52, until the cluster needs repair (which could be next week hahaha) I may just live with it. I figured they may be a way to futz with the settings. I guess that rules out having the center display default of off every ignition cycle. I find it kind of annoying that it stays on all the time. my 01 a4 you could shut it off and it was always off unless you toggled the switch on the stalk
