Hello all...this is my first post and need help to get my sons audi back on the road.

I was recently driving his A4 when I noticed loss of power and extreme vibration. The CEL came on and was blinking. I also noticed the EPC light come on. I quickly returned home and used my cheap code reader to find a fault. It showed P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire). Here is what I did:

- Swapped plugs 3 and 1 to see if problem would move...did nothing. Still had #3 cylinder misfire.
- Replaced with new plugs and ignition coils...zero improvement.
- Replaced all 4 fuel injectors...zero improvement.
- Thoroughly cleaned carbon of all valves...even tried a sea-foam treatment...zero improvement.
- Replaced intake manifold with upgraded manifold...zero improvement.

So I finally broke down and bought a VCDS cable. I ran the autoscan and then cleared all codes hoping one of the repairs I made would correct itself after codes were erased. I started car and almost immediately the CEL came on blinking and car still idled with an extreme stutter.

I don't know where to go from here besides taking it to the dreaded dealership. Hopefully someone can help! Thank you!

Hi Johnyb1978,
Your next step is a compression test or better still a cylinder leakage test.
Regards HMC

TBH, I would have gotten that done that before replacing some of the more expensive components.

Johny,
Did you check if cylinder 3 coil is receiving the activation signal from ECM?

Cold engine misfires, this can be a sign of carbon build up on the valves. A bit of a primer on this topic: https://youtu.be/RnhUJsZXzmg

Johny,
Did you check if cylinder 3 coil is receiving the activation signal from ECM?

Can you please explain how to do that? Thank you!

HMC, thanks for your reply. Just completed a compression test and this is what I found:

#1 Cyl- 130
#2 Cyl- 130
#3 Cyl- 25
#4 Cly- 130

So I suspect an exhaust valve...any other ideas?

You are correct kind Sir! My dumbass totally skipped the compression test by throwing parts at it hoping for a quick fix.

Low compression can also be caused by an inlet valve not closing fully - possibly because of carbon build-up?

Well, that compression test certainly does explain why cylinder #3 has a misfire!

Time for a bore-scope camera to have a look at the valves?

Alternative: There should be an adapter available that screws in place of the spark plug that allows you to introduce air from a compressor into the cylinder. This should then give you some idea where the air is escaping. Make sure you have a pressure regulator in the air line and start with low pressure. Too high a pressure produce unwanted rotation of the engine internals.

Burnt valve, I see this occasionally always with VAG TSFI oil burners. Once the oil ash gets on the valve face the heat can no longer be transferred to the valve seat, thus your burnt valve face. I teardown and replace pistons and usually a reman head from VAG because the valve guides are not serviceable on these engines any longer.

New piston part numbers have slightly better oil control. If you're serious about fixing I can post part numbers, the newest number requires a new style connecting rod with larger wristpin diameter that gets expensive.

Also there is updated ECM programming for oil consumption. I have had many of these engines apart and will tell you from experience most cold misfires on VAG vehicles are due to injector issues not carbon buildup on the valves. Obviously we replace injectors and valve cleaning at the same time.

Anytime I see cold misfires in the freeze frame I throw a can of Liqui-Moly LM 2007 in the gas tank then follow up with a second can, the stuff is amazing.

Turned out to be a burnt valve.

You were correct kind Sir! It was a burnt valve. I didn't have the $$$ to replace the piston/connecting rod...but I got it back on the road running great! Thanks to all who responded.!
