Hi all,

I have encountered some difficulty trying to get these headlights to work. I want to start off by saying that I went against all advice from the seller's disclaimer that these headlights do not work with cars with factory Xenons. However, in saying that, I have seen others make it work (through the use of a harness, and perhaps some coding) so I have high hopes it will also work for me :)

The goal

The goal here is for me to be able to successfully retrofit the below headlights into my vehicle. Below is a pic and a link to the headlights, as well as the harness that I purchased:

The problem

Every other function (indicators, DRLs, low-beam) work completely fine.

The only problem I am facing is that the high beams (which are the inner projector lens) do not light up at all. I have tried several bulbs and that does not seem to be the issue.

The issue is potentially due to coding. from reading up on similar forum posts, the issue is due to the original headlights having a 'shutter' high-beam function (meaning there is a shared low/high beam projector, and the high beam is activated by opening the shutter on the low-beam)

The recommendations I have seen so far is to change the "Lasstyp" of Leuchte8FL RB39 and Leucht9FL RB2 to something different. Unfortunately, there are a lot of options and I am lost as to which one to try.

Solution?

I appreciate that I may have left out some potentially important details for a proper diagnosis; If there are any additional details I can include, please let me know and I will include it in the post.

Otherwise, I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction to get this working!

^^^ G'day cobber!!! hmm...... please post-up a copy of an autoscan so we can all see what equipment is installed in your car (and more importantly, so we can see how well the car has tolerated the retrofitted components).

As for the "the problem" and purely IMO based entirely on your explanation, I doubt that experimenting with Leuchte8FL RB39, or Leucht9FL RB29FL will be useful. My concern regarding this approach stems from the fact that these 2 x Leuchte-sets are traditionally assigned to the main-beam lamps on incandescent headlight assemblies. Since your car was factory fitted with HIDs, I very much doubt that the the pins on the BCM for these 2 x Leuchte-sets (i.e. pin #29, socket B and pin #39, socket B) will be terminated with wires.

Instead, it's more likely that the main-beam function on your car will be controlled by Leuchte10SHUTTER LB23 (left-side) and Leuchte11SHUTTER RB22 (right-side).

Now as to the "solution", second guessing the supply needs of third-party, after-market headlight fittings is very hit-and-miss because the internal design can vary greatly. Also, without an auto-scan it's unclear if your car has a hex55 module and if so, how it feels after the adapter was installed (which would have disconnected the headlights from the module - I assume). Finally, there's the matter of the supplier's advice regarding the courageous nature of fitting this equipment to a HID car (as you say). So, lots of unknowns!!

Nevertheless, if you want to start with the "low-hanging fruit", you might consider a pure coding try first like this: since the adapter that you used was 14 x pin (car-end) to 10 x pin (headlight- end), the new fittings clearly expected to see a 10 x pin connector in the car loom . As said previously, this means that the new headlight fittings were designed with halogen fittings in mind and this is confirmed by the seller's advice.

Based on this line of conclusions, perhaps try setting-up the "Shutter" Leuchte-sets in the same way as halogen main-beam lights. I'm guessing of course and I'm not even sure that these function specific Leuchte-sets are able to operate in this mode. But if you want to proceed, try this:

Many thanks for the detailed write-up and suggestions. I will try these two adaptations tomorrow when I have the headlights plugged in. At this stage I am still just test-fitting (after all, there's no point ripping everything out if I can't get the high-beams to work!).

Below is an auto-scan as requested (again noting the Bi-xenons are still installed so you may not see any info on the retrofit headlights). I will post up another auto-scan tomorrow with the retrofit headlights plugged in.

Hi Don,

After playing around with the settings you suggested, I have some even more bizarre findings to share.

It seems that the high beam do in fact light up (but only for about 3/4 of a second) then they would turn off. I guess I previously couldn't notice it from outside the housing due to how short the flash actually is.

Anyway, I tried a variety of things (including LED bulbs, H7 halogens, and even a HID with ballast), all producing similar results.

Here is what an LED bulb looks like when I try to activate high beam (the light comes on when the stalk is pulled):


Here is the same LED bulb but polarities reversed in the plug (the light comes on when I release the stalk):


And here is the same but with a HID + ballast (only one of the polarities work, flipping it causes the HID to not illuminate at all):


I didn't get a video of it with a H7 halogen but I think you get the idea.

What I also noticed was when I disconnected the inner bulb entirely, the outer projector reveals that it actually has a "shutter" type function, and raises the low-beam shutter (just like in the original bi-xenon headlights). This means that technically I now have a high beam (at the sacrifice of the entire inner projector) :confused:

This seems to be the same behavior that was observed in the previous forum thread which you responded to here.

I have also experimented with the Lichtfunktion for A and B and it seems anything other than Lichthupe generell would cause it to not light up at all (although I haven't tested every single option in the list).

Curious if you've attempted to change your VCDS coding to Halogen? I would think you'd need to do the reverse coding of a halogen to bi-xenon upgrade. I'm not sure on the VLAND lights, but a lot of these projector reps made to upgrade Halogens have all the electronics internally to draw the same power as your halogens - hence plug and play with no bulb out errors. I'm curious if your settings are still setup for AFS and auto-leveling with LED lights?

Below is the coding adaptations for a NAR 2014 Mk7 GTI going from Halogen to Factory Bi-xenon. Maybe compare his before values to yours?:

I took a column that had my car and one that had a NAR lighting package and did a comparison of the light channels 0 through 11 to determine what changes needed to be made. For light channels 10 and 11 adaptation files 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 needed to be changed. My changes are below.

I also made coding changes to let car know I have xenon lights, byte 2 bi-xenon without light assist, and byte 6 bit 5-6 xenon shutter installed.

You now have properly functioning lights, but you do not have AFS.

Code your CAN Gateway. Take the Code that you have from your old module and put in new module with one change. Byte 11 bit 1 should be a 1 not a 0. I found this by comparing LP and non-LP cars. Currently there is not a description for this in the VAGCOM long coding; however, Ross-Tech is aware of the issue and may update in a revision. So byte 11 in Hex goes from 28 to 2A.

VAGCOM changes to introduce AFS to CANBUS, Code AFS, Add Auto-leveling to Instruments - Use Vagcom to tell CANBUS module that AFS control module has been added. Select 19 CAN Gateway, then installation list and check the box next to 55 Xenon Range and execute.

Code AFS: Note when the AFS is properly coded it will automatically code the AFS slave modules on the lights. I attempted to use the long coding and check what was applicable; however, received errors. Finally used admap from Rosstech forum for 2016 GTI Autobahn: Coding: 021A01010B000400 Changed the bit from NAR to ROW so ended up with 021A01000B000400. Once coded it should look like this, which shows slave controllers at headlight have also been coded by master AFS module:

One more change to the Instrument Module 17. Change byte 4 bit 3 by checking autoleveling. In my case byte 4 went from 21 to 29. If you do not do this after adding AFS you will get a failure in instrument module of “incorrectly coded”.

Also, question on your harness. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000849328042.html - This looks like it might be for a MK7.5 (facelift) headlight conversion. Most of the reps with a "7.5" look still connect to the Mk7 (15-17) Halogen harnesses. Are you sure this is the correct harness you'd need?

I could be wrong as i'm using what I know about the NAR lighting setup, not sure they wired them differently on your side of the world. Examples below.

Curious if you've attempted to change your VCDS coding to Halogen? I would think you'd need to do the reverse coding of a halogen to bi-xenon upgrade. I'm not sure on the VLAND lights, but a lot of these projector reps made to upgrade Halogens have all the electronics internally to draw the same power as your halogens - hence plug and play with no bulb out errors. I'm curious if your settings are still setup for AFS and auto-leveling with LED lights?

Sean: When it comes to third party after market headlight fittings (which ALL claim to be OEM plug-and-play, but seldom are) - anything is possible!!!

As for your hypothesis about "reverse coding", remember the VLAND lights are designed to be retro fitted to vehicles that have incandescent headlight assemblies. This means that the VLAND lights expect to connect to a 10 x pin connector on the car loom- which by definition, doesn't have wires that operate shutter circuits of any kind. It's only on the 14 x pin headlight connectors that pin #22 & pin#23, Socket B (these are the BCM shutter pins) are terminated. OP has managed to circumvent the 10xpin-to-14 x pin problem by interposing a cross-wiring harness - but the VLAND fittings still believes that the car was factory fitted with incandescent lamps.

With the repeated caveat that anything is possible on non-OEM fittings - pure logic suggests that because of the 10 x pin expectation, the new headlights have been designed with incandescent power supply circuits in mind (not with HID shutters) - I reckon ;) So - notwithstanding that the VLAND fittings now appear to have their own shutters, doesn't change the fact that the power supply for the high-beams in the equipment still expects a halogen-like signal - I think! Hence my "low-hanging fruit" suggestion.

I will post up another auto-scan after clearing DTCs within the next few days. @Don - I've changed the settings on those videos so you should be able to see them now.

I do also like the idea of "reversing" the Xenon coding so will also experiment with that after posting up the scan.

Apologies that I dropped off for quite some time. The headlights themselves turned out to have some severe quality issues, which prompted me to return them back to the seller.

I now have a pair of headlights from Supernova (link to headlights) installed, using the same harness as previously. Fortunately, the hardware seems to be similar (if not the same) as the high beam behaviour can be replicated on these headlights also.

  • your first try at replacing headlight assemblies on an Aussie mk7 with factory Xenon fittings was to use third party mk7.5 units where "advice from the seller's disclaimer [was] that these headlights do not work with cars with factory Xenons" (quote from first post above).
  • The first try units were subsequently returned to the seller - the second try was another pair of third party mk7.5 units which has the seller's warning:

So for clarification, having had the benefit of 2 x different manufacturer's headlight units retro-fitted to the car -is the observation in your post below (probably not kosher to open a separate post on another forum thread about the same matter) the ONLY difference in how the high beams have failed to operate correctly in the 2 x attempts?
Hi all,
I am having trouble with my high beam not turning on when the stalk is pushed forward. The high beams work just as intended when the stalk is pulled back, but when it is pushed in, the dash would show the blue high-beam symbol, but no high beams would come on.
My car does not have a front camera so I am not referring to high beam assist.
Could someone please point me to the correct adaptation channel to fix this?

On a Golf mk7 with bog-standard HID factory fitted headlight assemblies, the high-beam lamps operate via the Leuchte-sets Leuchte10SHUTTER LB23 (left-side) and Leuchte11SHUTTER RB22 (right-side).

Normally, the high-beam "flash" facility is controlled by Lichtfunktion B on both Leuchte-sets via the Leuchte-command Lichthupe generell. And, the high beam "push-in" facility is controlled by Lichtfunktion A via the Leuchte-command Right/left high beam (depending on the right/left Leuchte-set). Do the channels below have the settings as shown on your BCM?

Don, I have to say you are again spot on with your diagnosis!

During my experimentation (and the experimentation of another Sydney-based VCDS expert), the coding for the above channels you mentioned were both changed to "Lichthupe Generell". Reverting the channels back to Left high beam and Right high beam (respectively) has indeed fixed the issue with the high beam stalk pushed forward issue.

(On a site note, I wasn't sure if the stalk-related high beam issue was related to the retrofit of these headlights, as I was having the same problem even with the factory bi-xenons fitted, hence my post in the other part of the forum. In any case, you have managed to diagnose the issue for me, so I will go ahead and close the other thread) :)

Haha, thank you. I am fully determined to get these working! The new headlights are bright enough to replace the original static cornering light, and the AFS on the original lights didn't seem to be turning with the steering wheel anyway :p



Now, back to the main dilemma at hand. The newly retrofitted headlights have the same problem as the ones I fitted previously. To summarise:
  • The newly fitted headlights have two sources of high beam light.
    • The first source of high beam light comes from the dipped beam shutter "opening" which opens up the rest of the projector lens. These are the the "outer" projector lens that are closer to the left and right wheels of the vehicle.
    • The second source of high beam comes from a secondary projector lens. These are the "inner" projector lens that are closer to the centre grille of the vehicle.
      • This source appears to work the same as what a factory halogen assembly would, except on factory halogen assemblies this would be the ONLY source of high beam.'
      • The light in this particular position is also very different to that of a factory bi-xenon. On the factory bi-xenon, there is an LED dot (looks more like a small rectangle) in this position of the headlight, which looks like this:

  • Nearly all functions of the newly fitted headlight appear to be working correctly, including:
    • Low beams;
    • High beams (shutter activated);
    • Daytime running lights; and
    • Turning indicators.
  • The vehicle's MFD displays an "Error: Cornering Light (AFS)" and on the Infotainment it displays "Error: Bend Lighting (AFS)" which is fully expected, given that the new headlight has no AFS module and the vehicle is no longer able to communicate with it. I think this is separate and unrelated to what we are currently looking at, so am happy to leave that aside for now if possible.
  • The only observable fault is that the "inner" projector lens fails to stay on when the high beam stalk is pulled (or pushed). When the high beam stalk is pulled:
    • The "inner" projector lens will illuminate for a brief second, but immediately switch off. This causes the shutter of the "outer" projector lens to also close. The immediate shut off behaviour is very remiscent of a circuit breaker or fuse trip, however I am able to keep pulling the stalk back and replicate the behaviour without any fuse changes.
    • As a temporary measure, I have disconnected the "inner" projector lens LEDs. This allows the "outer" projector lens shutter to still function (thereby allowing me to still have some high beams for the interim).
    • On the previous headlight assembly, I have tried both halogen H7 bulbs, as well as LEDs in the "inner" projector lens, however both would exhibit the same behaviour (i.e. flash and shut off).

My current speculation is the following (and it is purely speculation at this point, because I know very little about how these cars are wired):
  • The vehicle is not expecting a power draw from that particular position/curcuit of the headlight OR a power draw of that level (remember, the original light in that position is a tiny LED dot); and
  • this is causing some form of cuircuit break / shut-off to occur, which informs the car that something is unexpected and the high beam should not be on any further.

What are your thoughts?

@P1xellat3d - Kev: My thoughts are total speculation too, but here goes:-

I suggest that you forget entirely about making inferences regarding which wire does what based on the position of the lamp in the respective headlight housing. Whilst I suspect that the actual physical lamp position will be determined by the relevant road rules in the country of sale, it is unlikely to be pertinent to how the light functions are pinned on the headlight connector for the different manufacturers.
The manufacturer of your new headlights says "Fits: All Golf MK7 with factory fitted halogen/reflector headlights, TSI/TDI/GTI. 10 Pin Sockets" (see your link). Pure logic dictates therefore that the high beam lamp function is terminated on pin #8 on the 10 x pin connector on the new fittings because this is the arrangement on OEM fittings for incandescent 10 x pin connectors. It also happens to be the same pin number Pin #11 is used for the shutter operation on HID 14 x pin connectors.

The wire on the loom-side of pin #8 on the OEM 10 x pin incandescent connector, terminates at the BCM on pin#39, Socket B (left-side high-beam) and pin#2, Socket B (right-side high-beam)

And, the wire on the loom-side of pin #811 on the OEM 14 x pin HID connector terminates at the BCM on pin #22 (left-side shutter) and pin #23 (right-side shutter), Socket B.

If you physically eyeball these pins on the BCM housing, you will find that the shutter pins are the smallest of the 3 x BCM pin sizes and the incandescent high-beam pins are the middle size. This strongly suggests (to me at least) that the shutter pins are designed for signal voltages and the incandescent high-beam pins are designed for power-supply purposes (i.e. normal, 55 Watt lamps).

Now, clearly pin #811 on both sides of the 14 x pin and pin #8 on the 10 x pin connectors are wired together on your cross wiring harness - but if my hypothesis above is correct, the expectation of the new headlights that pin#8 can supply up to 55 watts per car-side when the high-beam function is energized might be a tad exaggerated on your set-up!! I'm not sure of the designed power rating of the shutter function inside the BCM, but I very much suspect that it ain't anywhere close to 55 Watts/side.

I don't know what happens inside the new headlight fittings but clearly the BCM shutter pins have sufficient amperes to fire-up the 2 x outer projectors. However, when the additional projectors are added to the electrical load, I suspect the power supply for the shutter pins inside the BCM collapses - hence the dynamic that you have observed?

So - if I'm correct (and I repeat, this is mere conjecture) , how to fix the problem? Well..... I suggest that the first step is to confirm (or not) my hypothesis. Perhaps try this: remove the wire from pin #8 on one of the new headlight fitting connectors. Then hook-up a temporary wire and an in-line fuse (55 Watts translates to about 5 amps - so use a 10 Amp fuse). Turn-on the ignition and connect the make-shift high-beam supply to battery +ve - do both projectors illuminate?

If so, perhaps consider an interposing relay with its coil triggered by one of the BCM shutter pins. I suspect that the shutter pins might be PWM waveform, but if you use a slow acting relay, the inherent PWM frequency, shouldn't be a problem. If the relay oscillates, simply include a 100 micro farad capacitor across the coil terminals ( and, for good measure, it might be prudent to also choose a relay with a free-wheeling diode to deal with the tuned circuit that results from the capacitor/inductor arrangement)- maybe

Once more, these are stream-of-consciousness guesses

@DV52 - this might be a silly question, but is there a reference diagram for the various pin # you are referring to? Would love to have a go and validate your hypothesis, but I will need some time to digest what you've written (and also know where to begin my first incision) :p

On a separate note, would you happen to know what the correct way is to "code out" the AFS functionality? Since these new headlights no longer have this, I figured it was time to do this so the pesky dash error can go away.

My advice is to buy the smallest access time and download as many of the repair manuals as possible onto your computer - Have your VIN ready and the WD document is called "basic equipment".

Anyhow, to whet your appetite - here's a very simplified version of the wiring arrangement for the left-side HID fitting - which I summarized and patched together from a number of pages in the WD. Notice at the bottom of my picture -I've included an explanation of the nomenclature that VW uses for their connectors (my apology if you already know this stuff)

From your auto-scan - the value of Byte 2 on your car is hex1A, or in binary 0001 1010. Remembering that binary numbers are read from right-to-left, this means that the Bits highlighted have an equivalent value of hex02 in the hexadecimal speak of the numbers in my list above (which is not surprising given that your car was factory fitted with HID headlight assemblies and your car doesn't have main beam assist).

So, again not surprisingly- there are no OEM options in the 3 x Bits for a headlight version of HID fittings without AFS. I guess you could opt for a setting of hex00, but I'm not sure if this will disturb other parts of the HID operation (I'm still not sure how the new fittings were integrated into the hex55 module -if at all?? Anyhow, if you try this, Byte 2 should have the value hex18, or binary 0001 1000 after the change.

@DV52 Hey Don,

I tried the long coding of Byte 2 to the Halogen setting, however the car still seems to show the dash error.

Noticeably, the error seems to come on after a few seconds of the ignition coming on (I think during the time where the headlights would usually do the left/right and up/down auto-level).

Also want to make a correction that both in MFD and Infotainment, the error displayed is "Error: cornering light (AFS)" and not "Error: bend lighting (AFS)".

All in all, I think the car is still somehow trying to communicate with auto-leveling headlights, and is freaking out when it's not getting any signal back?

To explain: J533 and J745 is the what VCDS calls the CAN Gateway module (@hex19) and the Headlight Range module (@hex55) respectively. There are 3 x interesting observations from the simple diagram above; the central dominance of the hex55 module, the absence of the BCM and the presence of a separate AFS CAN bus. The VW material states the following:
The cornering light CAN bus AFS (Advanced Front Lighting System) is a separate network which is subordinate to the extended CAN bus. It is connected to the extended CAN bus via the control unit for cornering light and headlight range control J745. The extended CAN bus is also used for communicating routine headlight system control processes to the external control units which are required, for example, for implementing the dynamic light assist function.​
What this means in your car (I think) is that the error on the center screen in your picture is caused by the now superfluous hex55 module (because it no longer can talk to J667 and J668 - both of which are modules that were integrated into the old headlight fittings)

So, and again I'm guessing -I suspect that it might be necessary to kill the hex55 module. Probably the easiest way to do this is to pull the 26 x pin connector because pulling SC35 fuse will also deactivate other stuff. And in addition, it will be necessary to remove the hex55 module from the Gateway installation list

PS:hmm....... according to the Australian Design Rules (ADRs), a self-leveling system and headlight washers are mandatory for any headlamps producing over 2,000 lumens. Now, I'm not sure about the light levels for the new headlights, but it might be worth considering this requirement should the car be involved in an accident and the other driver claims that the vehicle is not road legal!!
