This is my first post and I've only been using this tool for a few months. I saw that there are already a couple posts related to bleeding the coolant on the EA288 engine, which is what I have. Those questions don't seem to have been resolved and they are somewhat different from my very basic question, so I thought I would post my scan and start this thread.

The question: I'm planning to flush my cooling system. What is the procedure to bleed the cooling system using VCDS?

I have exactly the same issue and am still waiting for a reply from Ross-Tech. I will post the procedure as soon as I hear anything.

If it’s possible with VCDS, it appears that no- one knows what the procedure is - very frustrating.

As I can no longer wait, I have towed my Alhambra to my local independent for them to bleed the system using ODIS. £72.00 that I didn’t expect to have to pay.

Yeah I saw there are some other posts about this issue, but you all are way more advanced than I am. This whole thing of having multiple cooling systems is new to me. I've read the manual and know I am supposed to do something in VCDS, and I really just need to know what option(s) to select. I'm new to the VCDS interface so I don't have intuition for how to use it.

I have contacted Ross-Tech support about this issue and they replied asking me to submit an autoscan which I did. I haven’t heard anything since which is disappointing.
The EA288 engine has now been around for 5 years so I would have thought that the whole cooling system bleeding procedure should have been addressed by now. As these cars get older, this requirement is only going to increase.
Ideally, VCDS should be set up to bleed the entire cooling system in one procedure - after all, it is marketed as a VAG/VAS emulator, and this is what ODIS does.

That is not possible.

after all, it is marketed as a VAG/VAS emulator, and this is what ODIS does.
But be able to emulate, does not mean, we know all procedures! Which is impossible.
If you want to be able to do everything possible, you must buy ODIS diagnostic system with online access.

If you are an experienced VCDS user and want to do testing, I can post a procedure that maybe works, but I have not had access to a car with this system, for testing.
If so, please post Autoscan text file.

I realise that VCDS can not do everything that ODIS can, but I would have thought that bleeding the cooling system should be possible.
On my car, bleeding the high temperature circuit seemed to work OK, but bleeding the low temperature circuit returned an error as reported by others on the forum.
My fear is that should VCDS not do the job properly, this would only become evident when the engine suffers significant damage.
I will post an autoscan at the weekend.

In all likelihood, it IS possible, but there is currently no tested/documented procedure for it. We simply do not have every car, every engine, and every other control module VAG has ever produced in order to reverse-engineer all the procedure ODIS uses on them.

I appreciate that, but there are quite a lot of cars using the EA288 diesel now, most of which will require a very similar coolant bleeding procedure.

I also realise that it will probably need to be done using more than one process in VCDS. For example it will probably involve bleeding the main system (which currently seems to work with VCDS) followed by bleeding the low temperature circuit (which currently doesn’t work).

When talking with my local independent VAG specialist, I found out that once the system has been bled using ODIS, the switchable water pump is fixed fully open for about 100 miles after the procedure to facilitate removal of the last bits of air in the system. When looking through VCDS I found an adaptation channel called “Bleeding of coolant circuit - active or inactive”. Could this be the part that leaves the switchable pump fully open for around 100 miles after bleeding the system?

If a process by which these cooling systems could be bled using VCDS could be sorted, many of us with EA288 engines will be well pleased.

Did you complain to EPA for this procedure & should it not auto adapt to permit the system to bleed or by manual repair in RTFB?

Did you know if you had to buy the RTFB, Odis or VCDS to do it, any tools, it's reimbursable under the CAA & MMA since under useful life warranty?

Hello to everyone.

I've tried to look at your engine code on my system could not find it. I wanted to compare it to a vehicle that I did work on recently, i.e. 2014, VW Crafter with a CKTB engine (2.0 TDI). Please take it from me, the cooling system needs to be bled properly or like me you will buy a new engine.

I assume that it is the same, with two coolant circuits. If so please go to advance measuring blocks on the engine, then look for coolant temp and temp at radiator outlet (something like that). You need those two pieces of data, so have them on your screen. Let the engine warm up a bit and hold the RPM at 1800 - 2000, while looking at both the temps. You will see that one will rise (coolant temp), while the other one will hover at low temp (radiator outlet temp). When the coolant temp gets to around 70 degrees Celsius, the vehicle should start mixing the coolant from the two circuits, this means that the radiator outlet temp will also start rising and coolant temp will drop. If this happens, then your coolant system has been bled properly and please take the vehicle for a test drive, while watching the temps, do not let it pass 90 degrees Celsius, if it does not mix.

If your vehicle does not mix the two coolant circuits, then there are two methods that work properly and one method that partially works.

Method one: Take it from me, take the vehicle to the dealer.
Method two: There is a device known as a coolant vacuum refill kit, get that it works.
Method three: You will have to fill the vehicle with water over three days without driving it. Every 24 hours the level of water will drop and you will have to top it up. It worked partially for me because although the two circuits mixed, I still had a radiator light on the cluster.

Further, in relation to OWEGOV, I believe that you have already drained the system due to the P023A code that you have. Your turbo does not kick in and when you switch on your vehicle the Coolant Pump for Intercooler goes on and then off and makes a loud sound and then stops. Thereafter you get that glow plug light on your cluster.

The charge air cooling circuit is normally never connected to the rest of the cooling system, except when running the bleed procedure with a diagnostic tester. Also, during the bleed procedure other valves will be opened and all pumps run at 100% to quickly bleed almost all air from the system. Doing a test drive first and not following the repair manual with this can really lead to damage to the engine.

Read SSP 820433 page 22 & 26.

Yeah, so I am in the US. I can't say I have any idea what you are referring to. I did buy the RTFB, however, begrudgingly.

Yes, I am about to give up and take it to the shop. One concern I have after learning more about this issue is I wonder if independent shops, like I would normally go to, even have the ability to do this correctly. What's the chance they are using VCDS like me and would not be able to do the job correctly, or maybe they use nothing at all? I already bought the coolant and the dealership is not close, so I had hoped to bring it to my normal trusted shop here in town.

Further, in relation to OWEGOV, I believe that you have already drained the system due to the P023A code that you have. Your turbo does not kick in and when you switch on your vehicle the Coolant Pump for Intercooler goes on and then off and makes a loud sound and then stops. Thereafter you get that glow plug light on your cluster.

Embarrassingly, I failed to notice that code in my scan. I actually have not begun this job at all. The car is 5 years old and I thought I'd go ahead and do this, especially since I have plenty of time to stay obsessively on top of car repairs in COVID times. In this vein, I was taking it slow and doing my research first. I bought and RTFB. I bought the coolant and the distilled water. I was looking at getting one of those air compressor kits to fill the system. But then the whole research project completely broke down when I discovered that there is no information out there on doing this with VCDS.

So I wonder, what would cause that code?

Okay, have not been on site for a while. I own a 2012 and 2015 TDI and was not aware of this issue, thanks for bringing it up.

That said still not clear whether VAG does or does not open servos to both systems.

Personally I refuse to load any system without an air lift tool, just not worth it. I did click on the SSP and will not load that page to read what Master Tommy alluded to so not being lazy here. That said if the system is under vacuum with air lift does it?, or does it not load both sides?

Anyway hope to cruise the site more as have been in a move, and good to Hear Jack again. UWE, yeah not quarantine, as not sick, JMO, won't ask Jack, pretty sure some things are the same.

I appreciate that, but there are quite a lot of cars using the EA288 diesel now, most of which will require a very similar coolant bleeding procedure.

I also realise that it will probably need to be done using more than one process in VCDS. For example it will probably involve bleeding the main system (which currently seems to work with VCDS) followed by bleeding the low temperature circuit (which currently doesn’t work).

When talking with my local independent VAG specialist, I found out that once the system has been bled using ODIS, the switchable water pump is fixed fully open for about 100 miles after the procedure to facilitate removal of the last bits of air in the system. When looking through VCDS I found an adaptation channel called “Bleeding of coolant circuit - active or inactive”. Could this be the part that leaves the switchable pump fully open for around 100 miles after bleeding the system?

If a process by which these cooling systems could be bled using VCDS could be sorted, many of us with EA288 engines will be well pleased.
I can´t answer the question whether the routine holds the waterpump open for 100 miles or not. But I have done the venting routine on my daughters car (Golf 7 TDI 1.6, MY 2015, in Germany) just some days before and I can say that this routine is very poor and not reliable. It starts independent of water tempearture and ends before the temperarture has reached the opening threshold for the thermostat. So I processed this procedure 3 times and was not satisfied as it was nor possible to bring the before released cooling fluid into the engine.
At the end I drove the car to normal thermal condition and proceed the routine again. With low success. The next day I drove afer warming up only up to the 3rd gear with engine speed 3500 ... 4000 1/min and this helped much. After my daughte drove a distance about 100 km another portion of air was vented.
SO DON´T BELIVE THIS ROUTINE it is nothing worth.

To RossTech: I also tried the "venting low tempearture cooling circuit". As TimP already mentioned this does not work ! You have to fill in a time how long this routine should run. But the Status field always told me that with this parameters it i snot possible. So what parameters are right ? Even more anoying: I entered 256 for the tim ein seconds. The answer of VCDS was only 1..3 digits are allowed ??? And I thought 256 are exactly 3 digits. Am I fault?
Without joke: This has to be fixed by RossTech

By the way if anyone needs the discription of how to start the routine I can explain it here.

You do understand that these types of "routines" are simply initiated by VCDS, but what happens then is controlled by the ECU, right?

I entered 256 for the tim ein seconds. The answer of VCDS was only 1..3 digits are allowed ??? And I thought 256 are exactly 3 digits. Am I fault?
Maybe try 255? Or 127? It's possible the ECU treats this as an 8-bit number and and 256 doesn't fit.
