Hello. I’m trying to find the security code that will enable me to adjust idle speed, if that is an adjustable parameter on this engine. Adaptation tab appears to be locked to 128 (Ie 700rpm). Buttons appear to allow adjustments by only +\- 1 but save is greyed out so even that doesn’t work. Have read that the potentially range might be 124-131 but not sure if this is possible for my engine/car. Advice/clarification would be gratefully received. Thanks.

What is possible depends on exactly how your car is configured (hardware and software) so you'll need to post a full unedited VCDS Auto-Scan - see my sig for a link to a How To

A bit of a long story which I will try to summarise. 98k, manual. Well driven and looked after from new - 95% motorway miles @60mph on cruise (since 35k). Religious oil changes and only Shell Super ever used. Never lost a drop of oil until see below. Currently the idle speed hunts a little which is annoying (c. 700 +/- 50ish) - previously it was rock solid and harmonious at 700. If I hold on the throttle at c.800 it is harmonious again. Just passed UK MOT emissions test and fuel economy remains fantastic/unchanged.

For the past year had DTCs about EGR so mechanic replaced it. Some DTCs suggested throttle body so he replaced that too. Separately, rear oil seal leaked a bit so he changed that. I checked the PCV - aged but perfectly flexible - though I noticed a 1cm break so I changed that too. Mechanic cannot find the cause of the idle issue and says there is no inlet air/vacuum leak and the swirl flaps are OK. But the car had the rough idle and was hesitant/lumpy up to 2k revs then great/normal (closest description is it's like 'turbo lag', although obviously not a turbo'd car!). Emissions and fuel economy still perfect.

At idle, I could see that the TB butterfly was minutely flickering hence rough idle (not sure of cause or effect). Yesterday, I pulled off the TB connector while it was running and it switched to 900 revs and perfectly stable. Since reconnected and re-adapting the TB, the only issue is idle and the hesitance/lumpiness is completely cured - the car otherwise feels perfect/back to normal.

I know that the mechanic didn't have an alignment tool when he refitted the crankshaft pulley/flywheel, after replacing the rear seal - he insists that if nothing else was moved then it can only go back on in the correct position. I am left wondering if there might be a minute misalignment. Or maybe it's something completely different. A different mechanic who did the air leak/vacuum test thinks it's a valve seat issue. I am left with a car that now has no other issue other than a somewhat rough idle. I just bought VCDS and already seem to have 'fixed' most of the fault (although it was an 'accident' and I don't actually know how I did it!).

Any help with this would be fantastic...

The source of your troubles seems pretty clear from that fault code, no?

2 mechanics haven’t found an intake air leak with the pressure and smoke tests.

Going back to the original question please - is it possible to adjust idle speed on this car and if so does anyone have the necessary security code? Many thanks.

There really is no point changing the idle speed until you sort out the intake leak - it's clearly there even if the mechanics you've taken it to haven't found it yet, they (or maybe someone else) needs to look again.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice. I should have said, my aim to to get it fixed. I live in a remote area so while I am trying to find an expert, I would like to adjust the idle up a touch. It’s my choice and my risk and I would grateful for a pointer on how to configure it using vcds. Thanks.

Your location is shown as "London, UK" - is that correct? If so then I find your description of your location as a "remote area" hard to understand (I DO live in a remote area of North Devon BTW).

Having said that I'm sure IF it is possible to adjust the idle speed on your Golf (it isn't possible on all engine types in all cars) I'm sure someone will be along with the SA code (if required).

Just happen to be in London this weekend but live in TR18 and outside of COVID times I work in PL12. Haven’t yet found a local VAG specialist. Have so far tried 2 local chaps. Would be very glad of any recommendations/ suggestions in Cornwall.

I do not believe it is possible to adjust the idle speed. I'm not aware of any Security Access, Login/Coding-II codes other than the standard ones for CCA activation and deactivation.

The video on this page may be helpful in regards to the air leak though:
