This is my first post, I received a failed left wheel speed sensor. I ordered one and replaced it, then I got the following message:

2015 Audi A3 many fault codes

Lets do this again second first post. All this started to happened meanwhile my battery goes going bad. Take a look at the abs and the speed sensor previously it said that if failed and I order one and after installing it I have a different message. Thanks

Many of your fault codes appear to be a cascade of sympathy codes with source being the ABS.

Where did you order the ABS wheel speed sensor?

Is WHT003857A an appropriate substitute for WHT003857? In some cases a suffix like 'A' on the end means it's a newer/revised part, but in other cases, it means it's a part for a different application.

And then there's the fact that you bought it on eBay. That makes it questionable too.

You have an incorrect sensor installed. usually the grey color code sensor never interchange with the black color code, thats my easy way to identify them, I had this issue before where the originals were WHT003859A (grey color) and I interchanged WHT003859 (black color) and it never worked , until is installed the correct application, so theres nothing else for you to do than to install the correct part for you car.

herk: hmm... OK - I don't have a good facility for checking part numbers - but do they have the same penetration into the wheel housing?

If so, according to my WD, these wheel sensors are 2 x wire devices, so they appear to be normal induction type transducers (i.e. they don't seem to be Hall effect devices for which I would expect at least 3 x wires)

I'm not sure how familiar you are with induction type sensors but they are pretty much a small AC signal generator. They consist of nothing more than a magnet and a coil of wire (this is the generator, stator). Inside the wheel bearing housing is an integrated toothed ring for ABS speed sensor which is effectively the generator rotor. The action of the toothed wheel passing near one of the poles of the magnet in the sender generates a sinusoidal AC waveform - the voltage of which varies with speed.

The reason for the explanation above (I apologize if you already know this stuff) is to highlight areas of possible problems. So, your initial assumption was that the original sensor was faulty. If you still have the old unit, perhaps you might measure the resistance of the coil (across the 2 x connector pins). If the reading is either zero, or open-circuit, you clearly have correctly diagnosed the original problem. If the resistance reading is other than these 2 x extremes - compare with the resistance reading of the new sensor.

If the coil resistance of the new and old sensors are about the same, then it's less likely that the initial problem was the sensor. If this is so, perhaps remove the new sensor from the wheel bearing housing and using a small mirror and a torch, inspect the state of the toothed wheel. Looking into the aperture where the sensor sat, you should see regular segments in the sensor wheel - much like the segments in the commutator for a DC motor. It's very important for these speed sensors to have a clean air-gap between the stator and the rotating tooth wheel (this is needed to generate the AC waveform) - so make sure that the area is clean and free from detritus/grease etc. And also make sure that there are no broken, or sheared segments in the toothed wheel.

If all these inspections are OK - I guess the other remaining area of investigation is the integrity of the 2 x pin connector and continuity of the wiring harness from the sensor to J104 (the hex03 module).
