Touareg - Air Suspension - Running Gear Fault

Hey guys,

It looks like I am now part of the Touareg 'Running Gear Fault' club......

I have a good look around the net and have found that this issue comes up a lot, but there are not to many solutions out there (without taking it to a dealer and $2k later anyways....).

Here's where I'm at:

Car: Aussie RHD 08' V6 TDI with air suspension.

I've got the red 'Running Gear Fault' warning on my MFD. The car is sitting at normal ride height but won't raise or lower.



Here's what I've done so far:

Checked the fuse next to batt under the seat - all good.

Checked the fuse in fuse cluster on the right hand end of the dash (as per Manual) - no fuse present.

Inspected the Level Control Module (AKA: Adaptive suspension
control unit J197 ??) in rear hatch - noticed no power along the two power wires (red w/yellow trace).

Inspected compressor - Visual only, appeared ok. Probed main power wires - no power.

Inspected Level Control Module relay located at the e-box under the dash (see pic below - '373' location: D3) - removed relay - tested ok. Removed relay and hard-wired the switch - compressor functioned as per normal but fault remained and car would not re-level. Probed relay wires and noticed that the coil terminals (85 and 86) both had a 12 V reading - explains why relay tested ok but when fitted would not function the comp - strange??



Note: For anyone else trying to access this relay - the grey relay housing will drop down from the harness once you unclip both ends.

The auto scan is below. It is my first time using VCDS am I'm not exactly sure how to use this information to continue fault finding.

If anyone can point me in the right direction from here it would be very much appreciated!!

What the fault code says is that the power supply (terminal 30, which is the "always powered bus") is missing power. I would start checking the power line as per WD.

Update:

Fixed! The fault at address 34 said there was a fault with terminal 30 - one of the main power runs in the car's elec system. I tracked down a wiring diagram and checked it from batt to module. Turned out to be a simple fuse. I would have found this early on but the workshop manual I had did not match my car.

My car's compressor stopped working - the compressor does not receive 12V. When I jump with 12V cables to the compressor directly it works fine. I checked fuse position 44 on the right side 5A (OK) and also the 40A fuse under the driver seat - all fine. I checked the relay which is working fine, replaced it for a new one , but nothing different. The relay receives 12V and when I "jump the relay" the compressor still does not work . What is there between the relay and the compressor? That is where is my problem - please help

Not quite sure where that particular fuse is located but I found one that stopped the compressor on my 2011.
Open the fuse box on the left (driver) side of the instrument panel.
Check the 40 amp fuse at the very top (there are only two of them so they're easy to locate).
