End-------------------------(Elapsed Time: 02:43)--------------------------

No recent repairs other than the VW emissions modification that was performed some time last year. Probably over a year ago at least. The OEM VW battery is from 8/15 but it my little Midtronics PBT-300 tester shows 800CA. The engine starts great.
We also have a Nissan leaf for around town and usually only use the TDI car for distant trips from Chapel Hill, NC to out of state (usually VA).

The problem at hand began about 3 weeks ago. It was raining here almost every day so I was driving this car to work instead of riding my ebike like I normally do. I got in the car on that Monday and was greeted with chimes and warnings for ABS/ESP and airbag. I thought no big deal I'll scan it later and see what's going on. Probably just low battery voltage since this car sits a lot. Car ran fine. No problems.
I drove it all week and never got around to scanning it. No problems.

The next weekend my wife takes the car to VA to visit her folks. I tell her about the lights and say it's no problem.
She calls me when she's 4 hrs into her 5 hour drive to tell me that while on a 50MPH road, the BRAKE light came on and began flashing and beeping. At the same time, the speed dropped to 20mph and engine rpm was 4000. She pulled over and shut the car off. After a while she got back in and it ran fine the rest of the way to her parents' place.
The car did basically this same thing 2 more times while she was up there (3 times total). She ended up drivng her dad's car back here to NC because she was afraid the TDI would either not make it home or endager her on I-95.
A few days later, her dad hauls the TDI down here with his suburban and hauls his car back.
I have driven it a number of times since with no issues though I did note that none of the wheels are able to report speed.
IMG_9306.JPG

I will admit that this would be the first time I ever tried to observe wheel speed in the ABS controller so I don't know what (if anything) I am supposed to see in those MB's. Sometimes it would show me zeros and sometimes 65535.

Another thing that I will note is that while sitting in the drivers seat with the engine running, I notice that the transmission seems to want to lurch against the parking brake similar to what it does when you're performing the DSG basic settings adaptation AND that the little green light with the foot-on-brake icon is sort of flickering from time to time. When I observe the brake switch status in VCDS it does not show the same flicker so I don't think it is actually the switch's signal causing the flicker.

I have checked all fuses in the B panel, I have inspected wiring in the rain tray and as much of what I can see near the ABS module and each wheel. I see nary a sign of rodents living anywhere on the car.

Here is a small album of photos and videos I put together on google photos. I will add to it as I investigate further.

Thanks for your help!

Did you inspect the wiring to the brake light switch? It's on the master in the engine compartment. Fixed a bunch of rodent chewed wires there.

Thanks for the reply Diesel& ;)

I looked at the master, I also looked around that area including beneath the battery tray and saw no evidence of rodents. I did look at the brake fluid reservoir and it is a little low but not too low. All four pads are about or a bit more than halfway through their life.

Megan (wife) said that the first time that the car exhibited the beeping and the brake light, she was going down hill. Now that could be that the brake fluid was sloshed forward in the reservoir but isn't the float closer to the front? And how does that explain the drop in speed and high RPMs? That really is the main concern here.

I have looked at the WD and I learned that the speed sensor wires do change color for some reason in the midst of the harness but it doesn't really show me where they actually run. I don't know these cars as well as I know the old MKIV's.

It might be informative to have a look at MBV 001, 003, and 005 in the ABS controller while going for a short drive to see if the values seem plausible.

All under warranty extension and useful life warranty plus ABS module is a recall no?
So no fault codes when entering a limp mode should be reported to EPA and NHTSA for safety purposes?

I got it to act up while driving on Friday morning. I was in Advanced measuring values and I was logging but I guess I forgot to save the log...doh! Anyway, I could see all 4 wheels and the back two were 0.0 while the front wheels were accurately reporting speed. The car was definitely not wanting to go; kind of jerking around and lurching like it couldn't decide which gear to be in (or it was applying the brakes?)

Anyway, it sorted itself out after the problem persisted for a minute or two and I drove the car to work without a signle other problem. When I got to work I took another log and this time I could see all 4 wheels reporting speed. So we at least now know that it is intermittent.

I will call the dealer today to see if this is under any kind of warranty. I'm worried that they will not be able to duplicate the problem. Would logs that I have taken myself be considered "permissible" to execute a warranty claim?

It is reporting fault codes.

Wouldn't they maybe even become allegedly reimbursable for cost of tool & become a lawful instrument, since time stamped and can be possibly authenticated by RT too?

Did you read entire JPPSG?

So the ABS controller was either showing plausible data from all 4 sensors or it was only showing front data & rears were zero? There was never a point when 3 sensors were working?

That is correct but only as far as my observation extends. I only spent a total of a few minutes and perhaps less than a mile total monitoring under either condition.

I have not seen one of those sensors fail, much less 2 at exactly the same time. Seems implausible.

Maybe wiring, maybe in the engine compartment wiring harness where the D146, D147, D148, and D149 connections are located though it appears those are all independent circuits with no common connections between the rear sensors until they hit the ABS controller.

Revisiting posts 9 and 10 here, I drove it some more while observing wheel speed. I found that indeed a few times there were 3 wheels reporting speed and 1 wheel at 0.

Here is a log. I colored the cells to more easily illustrate where the crappy happens.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10cjQHUKH9CENYfvwBBAVS-Kbkjt5dj5PWHeyP3WzKhE/edit?usp=sharing

Though I didn't actually experince any driveablility problems on this drive. So the lack of wheel speed does not always cause the dangerous behavior with the speed loss.

I am actually sitting at the dealership right now and Jack will be fired up to learn that the service advisor entirely dismissed the possibility that there is any kind of warranty or recall associated with the ABS system. So I am just getting that takata recall done since I am already here.

G44 and G46 are the bad actors.

My plan is to
1.) try to test the sensors. It suggested to me that there should be a small amount of DC resistance across the sensor.
2.) continuity check wires between sensor connectors and ABS module.
3.) Inspect the physical path of these 4 wires to see if there is any damage that I missed in my earlier inspection.

Looks like I have some bad WD info or I’m just not counting pins on the ABS connector correctly but either way I think this says wiring is good.

None of the pins on the sensor end showed continuity with more than one pin at the ABS end.

Revisiting posts 9 and 10 here, I drove it some more while observing wheel speed. I found that indeed a few times there were 3 wheels reporting speed and 1 wheel at 0.

Here is a log. I colored the cells to more easily illustrate where the crappy happens.

Associated huh?

Call VW directly for consideration yet and before you contact NHTSA to start a case number in writing by email with date and time stamp or certified letter for good service?

Does the problem appear to be widespread, 2008> and on all modules, I think so, what about you & with a mere Google search too, to purportedly show the ubiquitous examples?

Maybe report the problem being experienced to NHTSA & so that when it does get uncovered or admitted too finally, you show up for reimbursement and all documentation ready to go?

Indeed there was a firmware level change at some point and it still happens as described in PDF's, huh?

Sensor ohm checks:
G44 sensor 1.224 kohm
G46 sensor 0.192 kohm

Which one is bad?

I’m further confused though because I checked both of the front sensors also and all I could ever get out of those is OL

Jack I hear you that vw probably should cover this but I just want to fix it. If it’s a couple of $100 wheel bearings or a sensor, then I’ll just do it. If it’s a gazillion dollar abs module then maybe I’ll look a little closer at getting the NHTSA involved.
I looked over the recall links you provided and it looks like there are a couple of conditions that need to be met (specific fault codes present) that my car doesn’t meet.

I entered my VIN into the recall/service campaign lookup and the only result was the takata airbag thing that I just took care of yesterday.

It is not likely that two ABS sensors fail & simultaneously in rear unless the rear end was removed due to changing something causing damage or stretching harness?

A poor ground causing fake faults is indeed possible and what part of the recall campaign was for, not just specific faults?

On certain vehicles, a fault within the antilock brake system (ABS) maycause the module to fail during ABS and/or electronic stability control(ESC) activation. This will cause warning lights for ABS, brake and theESC systems to illuminate. If this happens, the brake system relatedvehicle stabilizing functions (ABS/ESC) may not be available, increasingthe risk of a loss of vehicle control and could lead to a crash causing injuryand/or property damage

Did you load test the wires to the rear sensors from module to sensor and measure for voltages generated manually by scope or DVOM at module & by spinning a wheel and comparing to others?

“Fault 01130 MUST have 125 shown in the 4th line of the Expanded ambient conditions to qualify for ABS module replacement and/or fault 16352 MUST have 96 shown in the 4th line of the Expanded ambient conditions to qualify for ABS module replacement under this Campaign.

Diagnosis and repair of faults other than the faults listed above will not be covered under this Campaign and should be addressed prior to updating the ABS Control Module.”

This is what makes me think that Saftey Recall 45F2 is N/A to my car. It seems pretty cut and dry that if I attempted to demand that the J104 be replaced under this warranty that not only would I be denied since I don’t really have a leg to stand on, but that the problem that I have would remain uncorrected even if I were to somehow convince them to conduct the repair.
