2019 vw tiguan FRONT ASSIST INOP AFTER TOWBAR FITTING

Hi there, tony here a newbie here.

ok so i had in a 2019 vw tiguan for a towbar to be fitted along with a dedicated wiring kit that connects into the can system in the fuse box. so everything went well, bar fitted wiring connected. After following the coding instructions and a few vcds videos on youtube i got the kit to work and all the lights on the towbar plug now work. Now the issue i have is that on the dash it says FRONT ASSIST not available and has error codes recorded.

after doing some research ive found that this sometimes happens on these tiguans and people are saying take it dealer. Apparently the coding for the front assist needs altering to work when a towbar is fitted, how true this is i dont know. My knowledge is limited when it comes to coding and i have fitted many kits on older vehice and coded them 1st time and never had an issue, but this is the 1st with front assist fitted

any help, direction, how toos etc would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Tony good first post, however can I suggest that you keep your VCDS up-to-date as the version you have used is over a year out-of-date (the current version is 20.4.1).

I'm thinking coding in the ACC module should probably be adjusted to include "Control Module for Trailer Recognition installed". It's in Byte 3.

I've highlighted Byte 5, Bit 4 in the ECU. On my database for MQB build vehicles, this software switch has the descriptor trailer installed. If the problem persists after implementing Uwe's fix (i.e. Byte 3, Bit 3 in the hex13 module) -try setting this Bit, then try clearing the DTC- maybe?

Tony: I've divided my very impromptu instructions for the ECU part into two bits; a set of pictures (referenced by numbers 1-4) and some words that relate to numbered pictures.

The words are as follows

Picture 1: This is the ECU main screen. Select Coding - 07
Picture 2: you should see the numbers shown in the Current coding box. Select Long Coding Helper
Picture 3:The numbers shown on your screen will be different. By clicking on successive black boxes on the line the starts with the grey 3), navigate to Byte 5. Place a tick in Bit 4 - then click on the X on the extreme top RHS to close the screen
Picture 4:If you have made the correct changes, you should see the exact number shown in the New Coding box (notice that highlighted 5 is the digit that you changed -it's in a hexadecimal number base). Only if this number appears, select Doit!!

The numbered pictures look like this:

Uwe's suggested change follows exactly the same process but with the hex13 module - which is Auto Dist. Reg.
When you get to Picture 3, navigate to Byte 3 and place a tick in Bit 3 which should have the descriptor Control_module_for_towing_sensor.
If you have made the changes correctly, the number in the New coding box in Picture 4 should be 2A0460CB58FF8728749C810560408700000000000000000000 (notice the highlighted digit)
The number in the Current coding box is: 2A0460C358FF8728749C810560408700000000000000000000

On another related note, by changing the bit, what is it actually doing to those systems, i presuming its altering the characheristics for when the vehicle is towing something, the abs, front assist etc...

and also how do you know what bit changes what in the hex code, is there and info source or somewhere i can research study this.

Tony: I had suspected that you might be a bright boy (meaning that your IQ is on the RHS of the normal distribution bell-curve) - if you have understood my instructions, it confirms my suspicion!!

As for your very, most-excellent questions - you are getting into an area that has puzzled me for many years. I was told by a wise professor early in my youth (now many years ago) that if a person can't explain a construct in simple terms, then he/she really doesn't understand it!! Such is the case with your question - but nevertheless, here goes:

At its very base, your question goes to the heart of difference between the 2 x principal features that can be altered with a VCDS cable/dongle; adaptation channels and separately, long code. When I first joined this forum, one of my inaugural questions was - what's the difference between these 2 x facilities, or asked another way, how do the design engineers @ VAG decide which activity in the module is allocated to either category? To date, and despite a number of quite erudite responses from RT, that answer still evades me!!

However, and IMO of course, there may be some insights into the underlying nature of these function by virtue of their structure and the descriptors for each Bit/channel - perhaps? Long code's structure is relatively simple; it consists of a number of Bytes and within each Byte there are 8 x binary Bits. The relationship between Bytes and Bits are mathematical and historic and can't be altered.

The usual analogy is to think of Bytes as being switch-banks and to consider Bits as individual switches within these banks - but in this case, these are software switches rather than mechanical single-pole, singe-throw switches. Although not strictly true in all cases, there is evidence that the design boffins attempt to cluster the functions in each Byte according to their purpose (i.e. the software switches for the rotary light switch in your car, the LDS, are all congregated into the same Byte)

Anyhow, for want of a better answer as to what is the raison d'etre of long code and adaptation channels, my uneducated guess is that at least up until quite recently, long code was intended as a manufacturing production line decider and adaptation channels were meant to be decision variables related to the internal workings of the module itself. I repeat again (tautology intended) - this is a guess and it should be pointed-out that in some newer modules, there has been a tendency to transfer long code switch functions into adaptation channels.

So - what happens when a long code Bit is changed? Well, in essence control modules appear to be multi-purpose devices that are able to accommodate various buyer options. The state of the Bits in the module's long code (i.e. the OFF/ON state of each software switch) seems to tell the module which particular option is installed in the car (it's called a PR code) and therefore which peripheral equipment the module must control.

Your trailer exercise is a case in point - before the install, the modules were told to not bother to run their internal software routines for trailer control - after the install, stuff changed when the CAN network recognized that a trailer module was registered in the Gateway installation list. Adding the hex69 module to the CAN network wasn't enuff because other modules were affected in the trailer function - hence a DTC resulted from not switching-on the trailer related software routines in the ECU and hex13 module.

As to your final question about what bit changes what in the hex code - for those of us who are mere mortals, we must rely on the descriptors next to those Bits that are populated with words. I suspect that the wizened troglodytes that work feverishly in the dungeons of RT's HQ have secrets that only the Ross Tech deities know - but alas we users are not so privileged! I'm only kidding, I'm certain that with the introduction of the "yellow" long code helper screens, we have as much information about the the Bit function that is available.

as for the ins and outs of coding, its something i have only more recently started to gain an interest in, ive done basics coding new modules, injectors, etc in and many towbars but this s the first at this level...

from what i can gather this tiguan was pre registerd so the customer bought it from a fore court and did not order it. Also i have discoverd tat when the car was orderd it could have been orderd towbar ready for want of a better description. So from this im presuming that the modules that have errors would already be expecting to see a trailer module...so in your previous message where you mentioned the difference between adaption channels and long coding that this would have been part of production line decider, this being that the car would have been set as trailer module ready.....or am i way of here

I have a 2019 Tiguan Match 4motion manual RHD with losst abs coding.
It would be really useful to know a bit more about the spec of your car if possible please?
I have had a first pass attempt at building up the coding from the very useful spreadsheet on here, but always good to have a means to cross check.
Although I've used vag-com for 20 years on and off, I'm in new territory with the complex long coding deal here.
