Hello,
I'm trying to diagnose ac not working.
I have verified there is refrigerant.
With ac turned on pressure on low side is 88psi. High side is 65psi.
Low side pressure is close to ambient temperature.

There are errors in the auto scan referring to the fans, but I have verfied both fans are on and working with engine idling.
I suspect the RCV solonoid is the problem, but I would like to be sure.

I tried to operate the fans by using vcds but was unsuccessful.

Can anyone help with this.

BTW-I turned on AC this morning while driving and had cold air for a short period of time.

The fans fail often - the brushes get clogged up and stick in their holders. That usually results in the "Movement Restricted / Jammed" fault

I dismantled mine, cleaned out the crud and freed them up and they're been fine for years. The brushes were only about 1/3 worn.

After that... it probably is the compressor control valve. They also stick and often become intermittent - occasionally giving actual AC, often though, making the AC output feel hot.

Looks like inadequate pressure is the issue, please make sure the basics are right: recover and recharge freon to the required capacity according to elsa/erwin or even there is a data sticker in the hood area that shows recommended freon in grams. Now ensure that the compressor received supply to the N280 valve. If you have voltage present but compressor output is low or no activation, check the compressor pulley, I think this car uses the externally regulated compressor type and mostly the pulley drive sheer off and it spins freely with no engagement due to defect.

AC Hot-Measuging block data for compressor?

I did the same, and the fans are working. The dealer wanted a lot to replace the fans.
This was years ago. I'm wondering why I am getting an error code when the fans are working.

I'm leaning towards the valve. But I'm wondering if I can get data from VCDS that would help me diagnose.
For example, I get expected voltage for the compressor, but actual voltage is blank-when looking at the measuring blocks. This might indicate a lack of signal to the compressor, but I'm not sure?

Since I'm getting pressure equal to ambient temperature, doesn't that indicate there is enough refrigerant for the compressor to run?
When the ac switch is turned on, the pressure does seem to change some...low side goes up a little, and high side goes down a little, so they are not equal, but it seems like the compressor isn't doing much of anything.
I don't really understand how the RCV Solonoid works. It is more obvious with "old style" clutch.

Did you know the key to the compressor not failing or valve, is running slightly less than factory specs of refrigerant and adding forward fans in front of condenser to reduce and remove heat more effectively while not over taxing the already inefficiently chosen "size" AC compressor by VAG?



Compressor might of already sheared on hub, so it maybe best to inspect it?

Did you try simulating ground completed by duty cycle to compressor valve while observation of pressure changes?

I would like to become competent at electrical problem solving.

Back to duty cycle. I don't see any change in pressure. I was hoping to find out through VCDS if the signal is being sent to the valve. It might not prove it is the valve, but it would be nice to know the signal voltage is getting to the valve.

Since I did get a short period of cold air the other day, which has not happened again, it leads me to believe the compressor itself is functional, and attached to the shaft.

I appreciate the information. I will study it.

RTFB-Where to find the fine book? Is the Bentley manual what I want?

...previous statement about fans working was incorrect. I saw them running at high speed, but when I turn on the ignition and turn on the ac...neither fan is running, and since I have a fault on the fans, I'm going to remove the fault before considering ac again.

I'm going to revisit output test to see if I can learn more about the fans.

Not sure if this model has a slow speed, but for now, I assume not, since that was not part of the test. I cleared faults for fans. They have not returned, yet.
Downloaded VW Repair Manual for HVAC system, and wiring diagram. Yikes, wiring diagram was a large file, but I have it now.
....not sure what to do, but I think I will try output test HVAC and see what happens.

So you did this by taking off hub and verifying or you used x-ray super hero vision?

If you think you are doing this by looking at pulley on belt and center clutch like a traditional compressor you are way wrong!

Yikes! Quite a lot of sarcasm, but I get your meaning. I understand there is not an external clutch, but I thought I could see pulley and shaft turning together, but apparently that might not be the case. I will have to look at that again!

Did you know it only takes a couple minutes to take hub off to inspect it?

You would appreciate that video and spare part if you dont have to change valve or open system.
