based on this autoscan I found here some time ago I decided to upgrade my RVC, so I bought the very same part number 5Q0 980 556 B

(this was a mistake, I did not research further and I did not consider the possibility that the guy also retrofitted it, since he has a "non calibrated" error... at least that's what I am assuming now...)
I bought the bare camera and replaced it into my swinging emblem. it took some drill and Dremel, as the mounting holes did not align perfectly with the bracket. VW does not endorse this, they treat the RVC together with the emblem as a whole assembly. I also had to run the CAN BUS line towards the 5F but it wasn't bad, I also took the chance to carry on forward the GPS antenna cable which was coiled up in the trunk behind the carpet.
anyways. camera came from an Audi car so I get in touch with a friend who has the other tool to load parameters, and we immediately notice there is no file for Golf with that camera. damn... let's load the file for a Passat.
file is loaded, we play a little with the coding and we manage to clear out all errors but calibration. alright, let's pull out the VAS6350 board and ODIS (offline)...
no way. calibration does not go through, actually the procedure runs very quickly and suddenly END OF TEST shows on the screen, DTC of course stays. my friend says there is something wrong, he did several HIGH RVCs on Audi cars and calibration was never a problem.
we start moving the board around, trying different codings, tryings different parameters, like Passat Variant instead of Limo. nope, calibration still doesn't finish correctly.
I start googling and digging harder and I end up on a german forum that has an endless thread about these RVC cameras. they mainly talk about Passat, and apparently this 556 B camera is a bitch, better to have a "no index" version, but you cannot flash this back because there is no file.
anyways, the sad discovery is that Golf is supposed to have a 5Q0 980 568 A (or B) camera. and again B is a bitch but there is a file available for the A index. reading further (with google translator) I learn that gateway and parking module versions are very important for making this retrofit a success. only some specific versions will happily talk to the camera.
now I have a 568 B camera coming, which I found really cheap online, I'll keep you guys updated. the plan is to flash it back to A index and load parameters, which are available for Golf. then try calibration again.
I would appreciate if in the meanwhile anybody had some insight about coding and stuff. I saw @hadez16 very active on the german forum, hopefully he'll see this and chime in.
@downtime already shared some knowledge, I reached out to him cause I was suprised to see a 556 camera in his stock autoscan, while ETKA says that part number should belong to Audi only.
