based on this autoscan I found here some time ago I decided to upgrade my RVC, so I bought the very same part number 5Q0 980 556 B

https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?22426-Golf-MK7-5-OEM-Towbar-Hitch

(this was a mistake, I did not research further and I did not consider the possibility that the guy also retrofitted it, since he has a "non calibrated" error... at least that's what I am assuming now...)

I bought the bare camera and replaced it into my swinging emblem. it took some drill and Dremel, as the mounting holes did not align perfectly with the bracket. VW does not endorse this, they treat the RVC together with the emblem as a whole assembly. I also had to run the CAN BUS line towards the 5F but it wasn't bad, I also took the chance to carry on forward the GPS antenna cable which was coiled up in the trunk behind the carpet.

anyways. camera came from an Audi car so I get in touch with a friend who has the other tool to load parameters, and we immediately notice there is no file for Golf with that camera. damn... let's load the file for a Passat.

file is loaded, we play a little with the coding and we manage to clear out all errors but calibration. alright, let's pull out the VAS6350 board and ODIS (offline)...

no way. calibration does not go through, actually the procedure runs very quickly and suddenly END OF TEST shows on the screen, DTC of course stays. my friend says there is something wrong, he did several HIGH RVCs on Audi cars and calibration was never a problem.

we start moving the board around, trying different codings, tryings different parameters, like Passat Variant instead of Limo. nope, calibration still doesn't finish correctly.

I start googling and digging harder and I end up on a german forum that has an endless thread about these RVC cameras. they mainly talk about Passat, and apparently this 556 B camera is a bitch, better to have a "no index" version, but you cannot flash this back because there is no file.

anyways, the sad discovery is that Golf is supposed to have a 5Q0 980 568 A (or B) camera. and again B is a bitch but there is a file available for the A index. reading further (with google translator) I learn that gateway and parking module versions are very important for making this retrofit a success. only some specific versions will happily talk to the camera.

now I have a 568 B camera coming, which I found really cheap online, I'll keep you guys updated. the plan is to flash it back to A index and load parameters, which are available for Golf. then try calibration again.

I would appreciate if in the meanwhile anybody had some insight about coding and stuff. I saw @hadez16 very active on the german forum, hopefully he'll see this and chime in.

@downtime already shared some knowledge, I reached out to him cause I was suprised to see a 556 camera in his stock autoscan, while ETKA says that part number should belong to Audi only.

small update: 5Q0 980 556 was superseded by A index, then B. ETKA says they are only compatible with Audi but they are also mounted on other cars, like downtime's Tiguan. it's the same as the Golf, the catalog sees the whole assembly "trunk lid handle with camera" or "emblem badge with camera" so the part number becomes another.

I assume the very same for the 568 A/B camera.

can you post a full autoscan so I see coding for other modules as well? also, what file did you use for parameters to load with the other tool?

When I was looking into this issue myself (I retrofitted the same camera and couldn't calibrate it) I found a thread on this very forum where someone else was having the same issue and they eventually solved it by having a retrofit shop calibrate it using extra domino boards placed on a stand vertically.

Worth looking into.

Same problem here. Only difference is that the Leon was never offered with the HIGH camera and this maybe adds extra complexity. Right now I have Octavia parameters but ODIS reads the camera as part of the Area View system and asks for VAS72something which is the Area View board for calibration. This happens if I let ODIS to auto scan or if I manually set the model to Octavia.

On the other hand if I manually set the model to Superb then ODIS reads the camera correctly as J772 and asks for the correct board VAS6430 but calibration still fails although I have the correct measurements for Superb. Maybe I must find a way to flash Superb parameters and try again.

This is a scan before flashing Octavia parameters. Before that half of the screen was showing my licence plate.

haha I was looking for a path to a solution, not to introduce other variables which would rather complicate things :)

the 568 B camera is coming anyway, I'll see what happens with that one.

still waiting to hear back from Spacewalker and possibly hadez16 though...

Spacewalker has Touran? For that the 556 camera works. It can use Tiguan parameters if nothing else is found. Pretty much the same height and angle.

Thinking that should I try to replace the rear camera of our Leon with this one and see if I can calibrate it. Hmm hmmm hmmm

My car is a wife Golf 7
99% You can not calibrate camera if DATA set is wrong
I did also Passat B8 camera , and yellow line was display so high (almost to the sky) , after proper dataset , yellow line get back to golf level , but camera lost calibrations
So I finally get golf 7 camera and did not touch any calibration or dataaset

yes, the friend who helped me had the same theory, calibration is not possible because dataset is wrong. but there is no file for 555 B on Golf. so we used Passat file...

I read your post four times and I am still confused, how did you make it work? what dataset did you use?

or are you saying that you bought used 556 B camera from a Golf which had it from factory? if so, can you tell me that VIN ?

My car is a wife Golf 7
99% You can not calibrate camera if DATA set is wrong
You mean that dataset MUST match with the car in order to get it calibrated? Or just find the dataset which is closest to your car measurements? For example for the Leon I could take the camera off and mount it on Superb height and try to calibrate it. Wouldn't that trick ODIS?

I got the 568 B camera and easily downgraded to A index with ODIS-E, the flash file is on the erwin flash disc.

the camera has no parameters and I need to meet with my friend again, he's got the other tool. I could do parameters with ODIS if I could find a VIN of a Golf with the camera from the factory. there is no such VIN on the whole internet according to google. damn.

today I also received both calibration boards, RVC and A5 front camera. it was stupid cheap to have them printed on PVC by an online print shop :)

will keep you guys updated...

Not sure, i not play with "some data"
i play with proper data only

I reached out to my friend today and installed the 568 A camera into the badge. loaded parameters with the other tool and calibration was successful at first attempt. now I got zero errors so I consider the retrofit complete. I will update the autoscan in the non-broken section.

however I am still curious as how Spacewalker has the 556 B camera on a Golf, and both my friend and I were not able to make it work.

Great to hear!

I don't suppose you documented the butchering of your old swinging emblem did you? Would like to try and do this myself as I have the same issue you had.

Is it particularly difficult to swap the camera modules out?

I didn't because somebody else did of course :) here you go, you'll notice how the fixing for the cameras on the rear are different, and that is where you'll need to get creative.

I managed to fix it with one tiny screw only, instead of two, but it's holding pretty well.

I assume the inside of the Golf 7.5 emblem is a little different to accomodate the HIGH camera.

tonight I played a little bit with the coding, because Spacewalker and some other codings were a little different.
I tried different bits and everything is accepted, but I am not sure what they do, some are not documented.

maybe a test drive tomorrow will reveal something.

So I'm coming back to that since I managed to calibrate the notorious 556B camera on a LEON. I always thought that ODIS can be tricked but it was a matter of countless efforts to actually find the measurements that would trick ODIS and provide realistic camera lines at the same time.

For the record it goes like this:

  • Octavia III hatchback parameters
  • Manual car selection in ODIS, Octavia 2018
  • Select the camera as 6C and not 006C which is the Top View camera (if someone needs help with that PM me)
  • Place the VAS6350 board 1300mm from the rear axle and a bit off center to the left of the camera
  • Begin the calibration procedure by putting the gear selector to R and then giving these measurements:
  • 600mm camera height (that is actual height for a Leon Cupra with stock suspension)
  • 1340mm distance from rear axle (a bit fake in order to trick ODIS)
  • Board height is up to you, in my case it was 10mm since I have the VAS stuck on a cardboard
  • Let the procedure begin the countdown, it should take less than 20"

And there you go!
