Possible CAN-BUS issues? Sporatic Communication Issues

So Ive been having some issues with the car here for some time and have been unsuccessful at figuring it out.

My ABS module intermittency loses the steering angle sensor and sets the 01826 steering angle code.

I know it normally means the rack with the steering sensor needs to be changed, so Ive installed 2 used racks and have put 4 used ABS moudles in the car and the issue stiil exists.

Over the weekend I hooked up VCDS to do an auto scan and came up with numerous errors and codes as well as sporadic communication errors.

Now as soon as I started the car and redid the auto scan, all these error's disappeared.

I am starting to think my issues are due to CAN Bus issues but I'm not sure?

Does anyone have ideas on this one?

On an 11 year old car with 170,000 miles, it sure couldn't hurt to take pull apart the relevant electrical connectors at control modules, inspect them and the related wiring, and apply some contact conditioner such as DeoxIT or Stabilant 22.

You may also have harness rot somewhere.

Thanks for your response Uwe, so I have no issue checking and applying contact cleaner to the modules.

I did get looking at some wiring diagrams, and specifically the CAN/Bus and computer data lines, as I'm assuming this is more than likely where the problem lies?

So looking at the CAN Bus module there are 3 separate sets of data lines running to it.

What I expected to see was my problem modules all on one set of wires, but that was not the case

So here is what I found.

First pair of data wires -

    All 4 door modules
    steering column module
    climatronic control module
    Comfort system central control module
    Vehicle Elecrical system control module

    Second set of data wires

    PCM
    Power steering control module
    ABS
    Air bag module
    Transmission control module

    Third set of Data wires

    Vehicle position Recognition module
    radio
    telephone.

So looking at all this, my modules that are giving sporadic communication codes are power steering module, Central control module for convenience, all 4 door modules, Vehicle Position Recognition Control Module

It makes sense that I am seeing the sporadic communication issues with the power steering control module as I am losing steering angle to the ABS module intermittently.

What interesting is the instrument cluster codes only showed the Power steering module and the Central control module for convenience and nothing else?

Its still quite possible I have harness rot but it would seem unlikely that its showing sporadic communication with multiple modules running on separate data wires though?

I also thought about the electrical system control module not sending power the the CCMC and PS module or having bad contacts so to speak causing power to intermittently drop out

Whats the possibility of just having a bad CAN BUS module?

Does anyone on here have much experience with diagnosing this intermittent stuff?

Am I even going about this the right way?

Sorry for all the posts but these intermittent issues are so hard to track down sometimes

They all go to the CAN Gateway too, which acts as a router for traffic between these buses, and which has an additional Diagnostic CAN bus that only goes to the OBD-II connector.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. Intermittent problems like this are a huge pain to track down.

That very interesting to know how they divy those modules up like that.

I know this is a huge PITA, Ive been trying to put my finger on this issue for over a year now. Ive spent a lot of time on this and do appreciate all the input Ive gotten so far.

Honestly, I don't have an issue doing whatever is suggested, but I'm really trying to avoid cutting open wiring harness's and stuff.

Would you agree with me that this is definitely a CAN BUS related issue such as can bus wiring, connectors or a faulty module as opposed to powers and grounds?

    Hi Allen,
I do understand such issue can be tough and time consuming to deal with, true. Uwe provided a good suggestion of checking and cleaning connectors. From the faults types recorded, I can tell most CAN bus systems have no signal/communication. Very likely bad connection between address 19 module. Look carefully at all the socket pins for bend/corrosion or damage on this module. Have you checked for Term 30, Term.15 for voltage/voltage drop and Term31 on this unit? Have you checked all the 4 door connectors (inside the rubber grommets?) I will unplug all for inspections clean them and do circuit checks/wiring check with good multimeter. This is Volkswagen we are talking about , one of the fine German engineering with nice but sensitive electrical system so do not leave any stone unturned if you want results, no short cuts. If fault is beyond me, I will seek help of an expert.

Hi TFSI, thanks for your response.

I am definitely going to get some contact cleaner first of the week and check all those connections.

Since my primary issues are the power steering module and CAN BUS module, I will be focusing on those first, which will include following the can bus part of the power steering harness connector behind the drivers headlight.

I have access to some very cheap used parts at a local pic n save, but I don't just wanna keep guessing here as Ive done enough of that.

I will be checking powers and ground at the CAN BUS module for sure.

I was just looking for some input here as I would really like to understand what is going on here before I dive in balls deep

The car hasn't acted up for quite some time until this past weekend, and it was brief at that.

Is there anything I should be looking for within VCDS while its acting up?

Something that could help me trouble shoot my issue?

I'm going out on a limb here, but im assuming because the steering angle reads perfectly from the steering angle module(44) while its acting up, that its not a steering angle sensor or module issue?

Allen: I'm not sure if my approach to fault-finding will be helpful, but my first port-of-call when diagnosing problems of the type in your scan report (i.e. where multiple DTC s have the same fault descriptor) is to look for commonality in the equipment wiring. I note that the "Sporadic communications" error in your auto-scan appears across a number of modules and it's tempting to blame one of the CAN buses in Uwe's list . However, if I look at the CAN Network topography below (which you can find in SSP 891403 and which I believe is applicable to a 2009 Jetta), I find that the modules are scattered over all 3 x CAN buses.

With the caveat that anything is possible, this observation kind-of confirms Uwe's suggestion that a good starting point for investigations might be the connector on the hex19 module (what Uwe calls the CAN "router"). Whilst it's possible that the twisted CAN pairs could share a faulty section of a common part of the car's wiring loom further downstream of the module connector - it's probably prudent to substantiate the termination at the rear of the module as a first step. This done - maybe trace the CAN wires downstream of the J533 module paying particular attention to shared parts of the loom. Of course, the other option is that the car genuinely has a series of CAN wiring faults that are independent of each other - less likely, but possible IMO.

Thank you for the response Don.

So to start, I had looked at the CAN BUS wiring initially as well and had noticed the modules that had been flagging the sporadic communication issues are as you said, on different circuits so to speak, so the issue of being a wiring problem in the loom is unlikely but not impossible.

I have also checked the connectors at the can bus, the ABS and power steering modules and applied the contact cleaner to them. Nothing abnormal was found and all contacts appeared clean.

Having said that, the sporadic communications codes only ever came up once in the year and a half I have owned the car.

I think the bigger issue I am fighting with is that the steering angle value drops to "0" intermittently within the ABS module and not in the Steering(44) module, causing the traction control to activate when turning
    corners.

I still believe this issue to be a communication issue on the ABS modules side of things as when it acts up , as I can read and graph the steering angle value from the steering(44) module flawlessly.

I'm assuming that since I can see the steering angle value from the steering module(44), that there are no issues within the steering rack or steering angle sensor itself?

Just to recap, I have tried 3 power steering racks and 4 abs modules in the car and it has not fixed the issue

Is there anything else I should be checking within VCDS while I catch it acting up?

I'm not against cutting wiring looms open to search for bad wiring but its an absolute last resort.

    Cheers

    Allen
