2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Manual/5-Speed

This is my first post and first time using VCDS. The engine has been completely rebuilt, bored over .25mm. I have gotten the car back together other than a few finish bits. My Initial attempt to start the car is a failure. Luckily I purchased VCDS before hand intending to dial in the timing on this car (wives commuter) and preform the adaptation on my 06 VW Jetta BRM TDI with a DSG that I recently replaced the DMF and Upgraded the frictions/steels within the K1 & K2 clutch pack.

First off with 12.3 volts on a battery maintainer, I turn the key in the ignition and the cooling fans come on. When attempting to start the engine, nothing happens. The lights do not dim like if the battery was low or a dead starter. I do hear a click under the steering column. I am including the auto scan from after I cleared the 14 year old codes. The car does have the EGR/Flap thing deleted, cooling fans are unplugged to avoid battery drain, downpipe is not installed so oxygen sensor fault. My wife is overly excited for the car to be running. Any help is well appreciated!

Hi and welcome.

An unhappy Central Convenience module at address 46 can prevent the car from cranking. It will do so if it thinks the car has been broken into. So first things first: Lock and unlock the car with the remote, or with the key in the passenger door and see if it will then crank.

Of course you do have a communications fault with the driver's door module and on the comfort CAN in general, so if the above suggestion doesn't work, I'd either look for wiring problems with this, or I might just trace backwards from the starter to see why it's not getting +12V when you try to crank the car.

Uwe, thank you for the reply. Unfortunately when I purchased the car (Manual 5-Speed BRM Jetta) I was given a key, not the fob as I have for the DSG BRM Jetta. Also there are no external key locks in the passenger doors of either of the MK5 TDI Jettas I own. I did however follow your guidance from the driver side with the key to no avail.

I have jumped the negative and positive posts on the starter to verify the starter is getting power. I'm thinking possibly the relay that engages the starter spindle to the flywheel has failed?

Frustrated, 90 degrees, sitting in a car with a laptop on VCDS haha!

Jack, thank you for the helpful questions. Not sure how to engage the starter other than jumping posts.

I noticed, When the key is turned in the ignition to engage the starter with the clutch pedal down the only lights that dim are the lights on the headlight on/off switch. This area is also where I hear a click.

I have checked underhood fuse box. Is there another fuse box?

Disconnect small connector at starter, make butt connector (Female) at single wire( about 3 feet long) and plug in pin at starter where you remove Connector.
Turn Ignition On, Make sure car is in Neutral (VERY IMPORTANT).
With end of the wire touch Positive side of battery and see will it crank.

This is simple and old fashion way to check starter.
