2004 Touareg Limp Mode / ABS Codes

Hello,

I have a 2004 Touareg that all of the sudden is going into limp mode when driving / not shifting out of park. This happened very suddenly. Below are is the scan of the vehicle. I also checked Measuring block 125+ and saw that the transmission ECU and ABS ECU flickered from 1 to 0 a few times (not quick switches though, 1 for a few minutes, 0 for a few more.)

Any assistance in troubleshooting would be appreciated.

Clean connections, Overlay twisted pairs with enhanced shield for communication to address attenuation or change cluster gateway yet?

Definitely inspect/clean connections at all the modules that there are faults for, probably starting at the cluster.

Finally got around to taking a look at a few things to troubleshoot the issue. I did the following:

Remove passenger wiper shroud to inspect connections. Removed ground wires and cleaned up connections (they were a bit corroded, but nothing crazy.)
Inspected ECM/ECU connections under wiper shroud (all seemed fine.)

I have a bit of confusion on what the "Cluster Gateway" is on this vehicle. My initial understanding was that it was the ECM module i was looking at above, but I don't believe that's correct?

Would the Cluster Gateway be the dashboard gauge display itself? or is it the J533 module?

I appreciate your help in what is probably a stupid question on my end.

Hello,

As an update. I replaced the cluster gateway and am still showing no communication to the ABS or Transmission with MBV 125+ . I had initially stated that it was connecting and disconnecting, but this is no longer the case (even before i replaced the gateway.) Here is a refreshed scan with the new Cluster (I still need to program the odometer)

I think i may have found the culprit.

The splice between the brown and red-brown wires in the harness are corroded and the splice completely fell off when i was examining it. I'm pretty sure that caused my issue, and will confirm for sure when it's repaired tomorrow.

For anyone reading through this thread in the future, here's what ended up being done to resolve the issue. You may not have to remove the battery or flip the seat back at all, but i had anyway because I wanted to check the battery so i'll include it in the steps:

1. Remove the battery - this can be done following this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d9tUwIS-D0
2. Remove trim around bottom of driver door, up into the driver side fuse panel. You'll need to remove the hood latch cover in order to do this. The trick in getting this off is that there's a plastic clip on the back of the cover, you'll need to use a flathead screwdriver to pop it out.
3. Fold carpet over and out of the way. You should see the wiring harness under a plastic cover, and running under the left-foot rest over the carpet.
4. Remove zip-ties and start unraveling the wiring fabric. 6-12 inches up the fabric covered area will reveal factory wiring splices.
5. Inspect the wiring splices. In my case, and what i've read is common online, the brown splice may be corroded. It actually completely crumbled when i touched it to inspect it.
6. Repair the wire splice. I also redid all of the other splices while i was down there.

After i did that and buttoned 'er back up again. I cleared the stored fault codes and the vehicle was no longer in limp mode. I've driven it ~50 miles today with no issue. Obviously i still need to figure out why it got wet down there, but there seems to be plenty of articles around to help troubleshoot that.

I'm not too upset about having replaced the instrument cluster and that not being the issue. It was only $80 for the new one, and my old one had some issues with the display. Now, to figure out how to reprogram the odometer....

I appreciate the help that was provided to troubleshoot the issue.
