Error 00000 - Glowplug light turns on and limp mode

Audi A4 B7 Cabriolet 2008

Glow plug light flashes and ESP light comes on instrument panel, and car goes into limp mode. Turning car off and on can clear it, but sometimes comes back on.

Does anybody have any ideas? There are fault codes only showing on Engine screen - I've attached a dump below

What are the odds that this ECU's software is modified with a "remap"? It really shouldn't throw a fault code with all zeros.

Please post a complete Auto-Scan for better context, especially since the ESP light comes on.

Bought the car a week ago from a used dealer, so wouldn't know if its had the ECU remapped previously.
It doesn't look to have had any mods or upgrades and looks like it's been left pretty standard. Not sure how to test if it's had a remap previously.
I reset the fault code earlier but will post up a full dump in just a few moments for you.

OK here is a full AutoScan for you as requested.
If it helps, I went for a drive earlier and the light came on again and went into limp mode.
I pulled over and cleared the fault, restarted the car and all looked OK, then hit the ESP button on the dash to turn the light on inside the instrument panel, and drover around 20 miles of motorway and the car performed fine.
Not sure if that is of any help or not.

A quick update

Turning the ESP button on had no effect as fault came back again.

I don't have access to a jack, but from what I can see, it looks as if this car (2.0TDI 140BHP) doesn't actually have a DPF installed, just a Cat

So why would I get an error about the particulate??

AFAIK a 2008 A4 B7 won't have a DPF as DPF were introduced in 2009.

As Uwe asks, has this car been ship tuned or remapped?

Not as far as I'm aware, but after speaking to a reputable tuner who guided me through over the phone on how to locate the DPF (which wasnt there), he said (after I mentioned Uwe's comment) that it is simply possible somebody has put a map on the ECU for an incorrect car and it is looking for a DPF.
Would that make sense regarding the P0000 code though?
He is located literally the opposite end of the country but is coming toward this area in a few weeks.
Until then, if I took this to the main dealer, would they be able to:

A. Confirm it's been tampered
B. Restore/fix it

If yes to both, how much would we be looking in costs approximately?

Didn't Audi offer a DPF retrofit on some earlier cars? I have a fuzzy recollection about this..

I've only ever owned one Audi diesel (a 2004 B6 A4 1.9Tdi Sport Avant) which I sold in 2005 and didn't have a DPF - so I'll have to leave that for someone else to answer :popcorn:

OK, so a big thank you to everybody so far - thought I'd come back and post an update on what's been happening.

So, I took the vehicle to a very well recommended place - a garage with a mechanic that tries to actually fix problems instead of just replacing parts!

So everybody was correct - the car's ECU *had* been mucked about with - VCDS showed successful programming attempts as '3'.
Took it to the garage (they also specialise in VAG remaps) and they restored the software on the ECU to factory standard from an original software rip which they have to hand.

They took it for a road test, and instantly the same issue occured with loss of power, only this time, instead of code '00000', they got 'P0226'. Bloody throttle pedal!

The annoying thing is, I have already replaced the accelerator to try and rule that out as the culprit.
So, Ross Tech WiKi to the rescue, as per.

The WiKi has an entry for '16610-P0226', however, I was getting '00550-P0226' (Throttle Pedal Position Sensor (G79): Implausible Signal - Intermittent)

Would this WiKi entry still apply to me?

And if so, the entry mentions the O2 Sensor. I had a look on Erwin yesterday but kept getting Internal Server Error 500 and the pages failed to load so that was a waste of subscription money.
Looking on AutoData, it shows just a single O2 Sensor on what looks to be the DPF - is this correct and are there any more?

I'll get another full scan up shortly, but as a reminded its the 2008 Audi A4 B7 Cabriolet (8EH) 2.0TDI PD BPW - original dump ison the first page.
Any advice people can offer me now would be a huge help.

As for the DPF issue, mechanic is convinced that this Throttle Pedal Position Sensor problem is a separate issue to the DPF issue earlier, but can't get me booked in for several weeks to investigate as they are fully booked (took several weeks just to get this appointment and he was done in an 1.5 hours!).

Yes, it applies. In most ECUs, the accelerator pedal and the oxygen sensor come into the same Analog-to-Digital converter chip, so an a wildly out-of-range signal from the oxygen sensor can cause quite the disturbance in the force.

Thanks for the clarification!

I'm just looking to source an 'el cheapo' o2 sensor now (presuming I need both the upstream and downstream changed?) so that I can fit it to see if it makes a difference.
I've almost worked out how to reproduce the problem, but it's not an exact science.

So I'll pop the cheapo sensor in, and if it makes any difference or is more difficult to reproduce, I'll go ahead and get them swapped out for some decent ones.
Don't fancy paying £100+ for each sensor with no idea if it's going to make any difference just yet.

Many people have had less than wonderful results with "El Cheapo" oxygen sensors. So if you go that route, don't be surprised if it just adds to the list of issues. If it were mine, I'd start with a thorough visual inspection of the oxygen sensor wiring.

I know several people who have had lots of issues with the cheap ones failing before too long, so I'm kind of expecting that.
I was going to give it a visual check, but having to remove the cover and airbox to get to it, and then soak in penetrating fluid and struggling to undo the bugger with not much room, just to inspect it, I thought I'd order a replacement first. If it sorts the issue for now, I'll approach Audi for a genuine part.

Can't seem to see the wiring and plug at the moment though,so will have to check that when I remove everything else to get to it

EDIT:
What I presumed would be the 6 pin plug for the O2 sensor, located just under the expansion tank,appears to be a temperature sensor as VCDS instantly threw up a fault as soon as I unplugged that and caused the coil light to start flashing until I reconnected it. Could'nt see any other 6 pin plugs around that area, so maybe it's not a 6 pin plug after all.
AutoData doesnt show the wiring for it, and Erwin keeps giving me problems so can't check on there.

OK, the wiring for the oxygen sensor looks ok from a visual inspection, but I did notice something a little odd.

On VCDS, MVB 40.4 Ithink it was, shows the Lambda/Oxygen/O2 sensor value.
This always shows 1.0, with engine off/running/idle and whether lambda sensor in plugged in or not. The same happens with the replacement too. Should this not be fluctuating as it reads the O2 present in the exhaust?
If somebody could confirm this for me, I think that would narrow it down to an issue with the wiring from the ECU to the lambda sensor plug in the engine bay....

OK, so after letting the car warm up for a few minutes (original lambda sensor installed), the MVB started to change.

The balloon popup says MVB 40.4 should be between 1.000 and 2.000, but mine is sitting between around 2.39

Would this indicate a faulty lambda sensor?
As I am writing this, I heard what sounds like a small fan kick in and the MVB now reads 5.88....
I press the accelerator gently for a brief moment and let go, and it drops to 2.49 and the fan like noise stops instantly
