Apologies for all of the text, however, I feel it is important.

2009 A4 6MT Quattro Sport Package (CAEB motor) – I am the original owner.

Nov ’19 – flashed IE Stage I – Tons of fun and no issues.

Feb ’20
---Installed cat-back exhaust
---Severe hesitation under load appeared.
-------Replaced spark plugs gapped to .028 (3.0T) and Coils (red top if that matters)
-------------Hesitation almost gone.

Called a local Audi performance shop and they walked me through some VCDS checks.

Fuel Pump was at 54.6% load at idle
Timing chain tensioner was a -3.2°
They suggested that I replace the fuel filter, maybe the pump, and that I get my timing chain service performed.

March ‘20
---Replaced my fuel pump and filter at the same time – 47% load at idle now.
---Clutch (w/30k mi) sticking under high RPMs – fast shifting.
------Bled the line, a little better but still sticking

April ‘20
-------Replaced Slave/Master/Braided Line
------------Still sticking – probably air in the line.

May ’20
---Timing chain service completed (by the previously mentioned shop)
---Shop bled the clutch also, there was air in the line.
---Car is in limp mode
---Cylinder 1 Bank A VVT solenoid intermittent issues (Connector was broken in the solenoid Been for a long time apparently)
---I melted the MAF connector on the exhaust when I unplugged it to test if it would fix the limp mode.
---Decided that it was easier to purchase the repair cables and connectors from Audi instead of hunting the web and trying to find them. On my way to get them, yes I am an idiot and I drove my car it died with the error of “Ignition Lock Defective”

I cleaned my key and even tried the wallet key. Nothing. Everything is normal with the car except it will not start.
I purchased a new lock, same issue.
Google a ton and people say it is the Master Cylinder clutch switch.
---Tried to do the Slave Ball Bearing fix, however, my slave already has one at the end of the rod and there is no place to put it without compromising the stability of the rod. Finally decide to try and short the Blue/gray tracer to ground. So…I cut the wire and grounded it.
------Ignition Lock defective error is now gone, however, the car still did not start.
---------Also, the key will no longer eject. I remove the ground and the error comes back and the key releases.

So I am here to ask for your help as I am out of ideas.

I have a bunch of scans, however, I think this one is the best one. Please ignore the Wiper errors as the motor is still out of the car as I removed everything to get to the master cylinder to reseat the connector.

Thank you all for your help.

??? I would expect you to have some relevant fault codes. There was something in the ECM but it appears to of been cleared out. But more so, I'd expect there to be DTCs in the Acc/Start module.

Get the car to mess up again and then jump in and check Acc/Start for DTCs.

---I melted the MAF connector on the exhaust when I unplugged it to test if it would fix the limp mode.

Ahhh is ECU half dead and so FOD no DTC's or a blown fuse?

---Decided that it was easier to purchase the repair cables and connectors from Audi instead of hunting the web and trying to find them. On my way to get them, yes I am an idiot and I drove my car it died with the error of “Ignition Lock Defective”

Well at least you are honest.......

It originally had MAF and VVT cylinder one Bank A DTCs. They have been repaired and resolved.

I had errors about the wiper motor and the rain sensor. the motor was unplugged and the sensors been on the fritz ever since the I had my windshield replaced, there's a bubble under it.

No FOD. I visually inspected all fuses in the engine bay, drivers & passenger side cabin and in the trunk and they look good. Need to get a new battery for my multimeter to check resistance and voltage of fuses and relays.

it had been in limp mode for a week prior after getting the timing chain replaced. Most likely that was due to them taking out the VVT connector to see if they had the parts to repair it.

I had no other form of transportation so unfortunately I did have to drive it a couple of times, however, they were very short drives and I did not try to accelerate hard.

if there is anything you need for me please do not hesitate to ask. I can take a video of the startup attempt and show that everything comes on and unlocks normally and that is it.

when it first happened I tried to bump start it and the motor would fire up almost instantly and then died just as quick.

I also ordered a new master cylinder because I don't want to have to leave this splice in place.
Especially because I cannot eject the key while it is in place. The Audi dealer is giving me a break and only charging $258.

Sounds like ignition switch related or D2 coil or antenna not seen for key to Kessy.

Can you please rescan & post after an attempt at cranking and additionally the starter being jumped out by relay?

Did you load light every track as per WD since a melt down yet?

Apologies for leaving this out, I knew I forgot something, I purchased a new ignition switch... same issue.

I'll scan and post in the morning when I get back home. FWIW there is zero cranking.

Load light per WD....I'm sorry, I am at a loss for what that means.

Apologies for my ignorance. I did read your post and as I said I need to get a battery for my multimeter so that I can actually do active testing.

I just wanted to post in case someone had had this issue before and could guide me to a fix. I'll be picking up the battery in the AM and can post results then.

Monday Update:

Thanks to actually checking resistance on the fuses, I found a blown fuse in F3 - ECM
rq1oVOc.jpg
. I replaced it and when I pushed my key in the first time the car did exactly the same as before, nothing. I know that I have to push it twice now (probably another broken part I need to find and fix). The second time I pushed and held, the car started, idled smoothly and all of the errors, except the Ignition Lock Defective, disappeared from the dash. I still had a F194 and N75 errors with my scan.

This morning I went to start the car and got a whole bunch of nothing. Scanned and I hit the motherload of errors, something like 23 of them. As luck would have it, the owner of the shop I have been working with called about 5 min later. He and I talk and he tells me to replace the five relays I have in the ECM box, 2x 643 and 3 x 404. He tells me the part has been updated and he has to replace them on B8s almost every week. Read him all of the error codes and he is confident at least two relays are bad, however, as it is already apart, just replace them.

I have a Clutch Master Cylinder and five relays to be picked up tomorrow to test.

To: Jack, sadly I do not have a load light and no one I know does either. Also, I don't really trust myself to load test as with the luck I have been having, I'd fry sensors/wires. So if the relays do not fix the issue, it goes back to the shop when they have an opening.

I am willing to put money on the fact that VVT cylinder wires shorted when I pulled out of my house that has caused all of these issues. My stupidity is going to end up costing me about $800 in the end, saying I did not FUBAR the ECM.

Aside from Load testing, does anyone have any ideas as to why the car started yesterday, but then this morning, all of these errors. The motor cranks, then the TB clicks non-stop and the fan comes on. The MIL and EPC flash in unison, which is what lead the tech to think it is a relay.

How is your ignition switch?

Dont you know everyone can have a load light with small in line fuse to protect your fears and use a generic 55 watt headlight bulb?

Tuesday Update: Troubles Resolved!

The Monday no-start was due to my misplacement of a fuse. In my check of all the fuses under the hood to see if for some reason another blew when the motor started, I accidentally placed F6 into F9 (a blank spot). I pulled the five relays and tested them with a 12v source and they are all working as expected. When I was reinstalling them, I noticed the electrical contacts in F6 and was wondering where the hell the fuse was. I pulled each fuse to check for misplacement and sure enough I had put F6's fuse into F9.

I put the fuse into its correct location, got into the car, and it started right up with no issues. Somehow, the need to double push my key in the ignition was resolved as well. Along with the Ignition Lock Defective error.

I am going to replace the relays under the ECM as a 'while I am in there anyways' precaution.

I hope that my journey though this may be of assistance to someone.

As of right now, the only DTCs I have are one for me N75 (will be ordering that today) and for my Radio (my money is on the TPMS as I pulled the fuse and changed coding to disable it due to an issue with the sensors in my winter tires.) I am going to enable it again with my summers and check to ensure that the DTC clears.

I find myself very fortunate that on the low end my stupidity only cost me a 5A fuse and on the smart end ~$150 for relays.

Honestly, that never crossed my mind. I have been so mentally drained from this (and other things) that the notion to Google how to build one never even entered my mind.

I appreciate the guidance and direction that you offered as the perceived curtness of your Load Light video post gave me an extra push to spend more time on testing individual electrical components.
