2012 Audi A6 3.0 TDI (C7) s-tronic - Gearbox malfunction: You can continue to drive

Hi again,

after an issue with my wife's Allroad (not being levelled and still needs resolving), it is my turn

Today I got "Gearbox malfunction: You can continue to drive". The message comes and goes. Briefly there was also a RED warning which I didn't capture as it went away. I have also noticed that the car was stuttering a bit while the RED warning was on. I have also lost the PRNDS lights.

If there anything I can check before trying to get the car to Audi (160km away)?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hi, I think this could actually be the case where the coolant valve lets the cooling water through the wiring harness to the control unit. But you need a lift to get to the valve.

Why the issue with the coolant valve hasn't been recalled by Audi is beyond me.

I have already complained about this to Audi NZ and will follow this up with https://www.nzta.govt.nz

What is even more interesting is the fact that the authorised Audi dealers which regularly service the cars don't inform (clearly they must know, no?) their customers about such issues, perhaps waiting for it to happen and cause a lot of damage, so they can then charge big dollars for big jobs.

Any idea why 4H0121671D is called HVAC HEATER CONTROL VALVE on the europaparts website and in my service manual it is referred to as Gearbox Oil Cooling valve (as shown below), is this still the same part (looks the same on the photo above and the diagram below)?

Is there anything else I need to replace? Should I also get the 2-pin wiring harness 1J0-973-702 ?

Hi, please also check the connector on the engine control unit, in the cases I had, there was some moisture in the connector for some.

Incidentally, Audi has known this problem for years. I've worked for Audi in a car dealership for 27 years. It is just that in the technical product information, I think it is called service bullitin in English, this problem has been described for a long time, but not clearly in the heading. I think it said something like: Various malfunctions and a reference to the coolant valve. But actually you look for various CAN errors and ignore the entry.
A friend of mine from the factory, Audi, brought me to it at the time and it was exactly as he described it, as I said, they have known this for years.

Yes, because this part is also used in other vehicles mainly for the heating circuit.

Yes thank you. I've already seen that. I spent a long time looking for the cause of the first case and luckily I got the tip from Audi. There were about 24 control units in the A7 with different errors. Then again only 15 it was a disaster. Then we finally found the cooling water in the transmission connector, but the cause was not clear how it got there. The valve also happens to be close to the connector housing. I then replaced it myself, removed a strut and you can get the valve.

Hi and sorry to hear people are still having this problem and there hasn't been a recall on it before now. Definitely looks like the transmission valve is letting coolant pass. Looks like you have now got the car home, so would suggest the following actions.

- Clean up multipoint connector and brass pins (both sides) and install a new cooling solenoid. Check and also clean the 2 pin cable connection. Please note you can get an replacement valve on the usual auction sites. I actually think these are better than the VAG/Audi units and at 1/10th of the cost.

- Perform a calibration procedure (See VCDS procedures). Make sure it actually completes the full procedure, otherwise you are still likely to have issues. Please ensure that before performing the calibration procedure, make sure the transmission temperature is between 38 and 60 C also that there are no address 02 (transmission) errors, otherwise you will not be able complete the procedure.

- If the car runs fine after performing the calibration procedure (See VCDS procedures), then consider yourself to have been very lucky. If not, suggest you carry out a full transmission service, changing both filters and oil. Make sure the oil pan is removed and any emulsion build up in the base of the oil pan, PCBs and the ECU where the multipoint connector is removed. Once done redo the calibration procedure.

So far only the multipoint connector and plug was cleaned. No more errors and the car drives normally.

The next step is to order/replace the valve and clean the multipoint connector and plug once again. Not sure which brand out of many available on the available auction houses would be good enough.
