2009 GTI TSI Throttle Body Failure?

First time poster, new VCDS user and not a mechanic. I purchased a HEX-V2 recently because I had botched recall intake work done by a local VW dealer (Hillcrest VW PA) a while back and was intent on at least having some data that I could verify so I wouldn't get taken advantage of again.

I found a local VW garage (Dub Junkie Pittsburgh) when I had an ABS light come on. Turned out to be failed tone rings/sensors in the rear and a bad ABS module (unfortunately not the code for the recall) which was replaced by the shop. They also replaced the air filter and an exhaust bracket.

Fast forward a couple of months. I was driving and the car started running rough and went into limp mode. Made it home and the scan says cylinder 1 misfire. I decided to replace the coils and spark plugs. Did so successfully and car ran great for a few weeks.

After coming home for an entire day of driving, city and highway, the car died in my driveway, EPC and engine light on. This is the scan from May 1, 2020:


Hopefully the ABS code is from the ABS control module being replaced or something else? This was the first instance of any mention of throttle body errors. Interestingly after letting the car sit and cool down a bit it started right up and ran just fine until today.

Drove on back roads today and had the EPC and check engine light come on when I pulled into a parking lot and car was idling roughly. Shut car off and tried starting again and it wouldn't start, just fast clicked. Let the car cool for about 20 minutes, tried again and the car started right up although was running rough at idle.

Drove the car home and hooked it up to VCDS and this is the scan:


Driving home the gas pedal depression almost seemed sort of desynchronized from the engine response, but ran very smoothly when I kept the RPMs higher than idle. Once I made it home I put the car in park and depressed the gas. The engine sounded great, but when I left off the gas the engine kept accelerating, so I slapped the gas pedal and it went back to rough idle. I tried this three times with the same result. Given this outcome I'm not going to be driving the car until I can track this problem down. I also graphed the throttle response and it looked a little weird. When I depressed the gas pedal I got a proper looking inverted curve set but then both curves immediately bumped inward ~10% toward the center 0 line which didn't seem to be normal.

Is uninstalling and inspecting the throttle body a good place to start in this case? It'll probably take me a while to get the throttle body extracted but it doesn't look like you need anything but a T30, socket wrench, slotted screwdriver, catch cloth and patience. If the throttle body is gunked up I'll get a new one (Pierburg), new gasket, clean mating surfaces and install. I do know that the throttle bodies can be cleaned but I'm not sure I want to take the chance that the buildup blockage has damaged the internal plastic parts of the unit at 70k miles. Could a bad battery be causing this (unlikely)?

Other than the first car being replaced and the current one having the transmission replaced under the recall it's been almost trouble free, I guess it was about time for a few issues to crop up. Any assistance provided is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’d remove it and inspect like you’ve said- the plastic gears are prone to wear causing issues at times

Driving home the gas pedal depression almost seemed sort of desynchronized from the engine response, but ran very smoothly when I kept the RPMs higher than idle. Once I made it home I put the car in park and depressed the gas. The engine sounded great, but when I left off the gas the engine kept accelerating, so I slapped the gas pedal and it went back to rough idle. I tried this three times with the same result. Given this outcome I'm not going to be driving the car until I can track this problem down. I also graphed the throttle response and it looked a little weird. When I depressed the gas pedal I got a proper looking inverted curve set but then both curves immediately bumped inward ~10% toward the center 0 line which didn't seem to be normal.

Is uninstalling and inspecting the throttle body a good place to start in this case? It'll probably take me a while to get the throttle body extracted but it doesn't look like you need anything but a T30, socket wrench, slotted screwdriver, catch cloth and patience. If the throttle body is gunked up I'll get a new one (Pierburg), new gasket, clean mating surfaces and install. I do know that the throttle bodies can be cleaned but I'm not sure I want to take the chance that the buildup blockage has damaged the internal plastic parts of the unit at 70k miles. Could a bad battery be causing this (unlikely)?

Other than the first car being replaced and the current one having the transmission replaced under the recall it's been almost trouble free, I guess it was about time for a few issues to crop up. Any assistance provided is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

this points to a faulty throttle valve controller,however more detective work needs to be done to rule out surprises,clean throttle valve, clearing codes in 01 and immediately do a TBA to see if it will be successful,either way trace TV wiring to ecu for corrossion,enough strain relief at throttle valve connector,if all check out fine,find a good TV to test with,... I think theres a TSB or TPI for this particular malfunction,worth scouring the internet for it

The fault in the ABS is just a "Sympathy" code; the ABS saying it knows the ECU is unhappy.

Thanks for the bulletin. It seems that there is a correlation between the car being warmed up / driven and when the issue becomes apparent, or it could just be a false positive due to the time factor. I'm leaning toward the throttle body assembly itself but I'm planning on being wrong at least once, it's not going to be the first or the last time.

Making progress. New throttle body is installed and I'll be opening up he old one this week to see if the plastic inside is damaged. I only found out after uninstall that the dealer had managed to mangle up the top hose clamp that compressed the hose to the throttle body, apparently the clamp should be clipped into the hose itself but on my hose it had been run out of the tabs. I ended up getting a Spulen silicone hose and it's a challenge to get it onto the throttle body. I did confirm that the hose will fit on both connections, it's just a bear to get this seated. Is there any sort of lubricant I could use that would make this hose install go a little easier that is safe for silicone, rubber and the engine? Thanks.

You do not need any lubricant, I just did one yesterday. The issue is, when inserting the hose on the throttle body the hose is not properly inserted at the back (the part you can't see of the throttle body) of the throttle body. Insert the hose on the throttle body first and the plastic pipe from the intercooler last. In relation to the intercooler plastic pipe, there is a bolt which bolts the pipe to the engine, you need to undo it and that will allow movement of the plastic pipe.

Got everything reassembled today, did the adaptation using VCDS and took the car for a couple of test drives. Throttle response was noticeably better and the graph didn't have any of the odd dips present typical with the old throttle. I'll have the VW mechanic take a look at my work and check out the wiring to determine if there is evidence the wiring could be a contributing factor to this problem. Interestingly it looks like there is a bracket that hold two connectors to the bottom right side of the intake manifold via two screws? The connectors are seated in the bracket but the bracket is not connected to the intake. Does that bracket screw to the intake and if so is there a place to get replacement screws to attach? Maybe that's a question for the mechanic. Yet one more reason I'll never take my car to a dealer again.

I do have thoughts on a few things I've learned in this process that might make things easier for someone else doing this sort of work. A micro ratchet is a great tool for this job. I got a HBR5 from VIM as well as their low profile Torx bits and it made it much easier to reach screws crammed in tight spaces easier to reach. Only improvement I could think of is an articulating micro ratchet for some locations, e.g. rear screws on throttle body, but the micro ratchet with a short extension did the job. Another location the micro ratchet worked really well was to release the rear facing plastic tab on the U shaped engine air intake hose to release it from the bottom of the air filter housing.

The longest amount of time spent was removing the turbocharger intercooler pipe, but I'm confident that was in part due to the tech at the dealer mangling the upper hose clamp around the throttle body, it fought me for over an hour even with hose picks. Only once it was off and I looked up the image of what the hose clamp should actually look like did I realize the effort was not typical if the hose was installed and undamaged. All of the other screws and clamps came apart easily with a stubby ratcheting screwdriver and nut drivers.

Frankly if you have smaller hands/fingers removing the throttle body is going to be much easier. Enlisting the help of someone to uninstall and install the throttle body with those attributes is highly recommended. A medium sized lint free towel positioned to both block open pipes and catch any screws is a good idea. I had a cheap telescoping magnet just in case but I didn't need to use it.

Placing a small mirror on the towel will make aligning and installing the new throttle body gasket much easier. After fighting with the new more rigid turbocharger intercooler pipe I took a break and got some IPC P-80 Emulsion. I wiped it on the inside and edge of the silicone pipe only and in about 15 minutes the new pipe was installed, 14 of the minutes was really fighting the confined space I had to work with. Reinstalling the noise pipe took 5 seconds with the P-80, it's really remarkable stuff in my opinion.

I was curious what the old throttle body looked like inside so I unscrewed the Torx screws and used the Vamplier VT-002-6 (Engineer Japan rebranded tool for the NA market) to easily remove the shear screw. I was surprised to find the gears in pristine condition, not a hint of wear or broken teeth. The only thing that was a little odd was when I turned the small gear attached to the motor it consistently seemed to get harder to rotate in one area and made a whining sound, not sure if that is normal for the motor to do that or not.

Thank you for all of the assistance on the forum, I'm glad Ross Tech makes such an affordable and capable tool. While one can hope the UX of VCDS will improve over time to decrease support load even further I can say it's paid for itself many times over in a very short time in my case.
