**first post, be gentle*
Recently bought a 2004 Passat GLS 4Motion with the 1.8T and I'm running into an issue when I try to re-code the transmission I get an "Error 31: request out of range error message. Currently my code is 0001104 which is tiptronic buttons/paddles installed, new strategy shifting, DSP program active, and front wheel drive (North America). I would like to change to 0001032 which would give me old strategy shifting, "sport" mode", and AWD (North America). What am I doing wrong? Do I need a security access code? If so I cannot find one.

Adding to the confusion my transmission is a 5HP-19 FAL which according to the ZF website is a version of the 5HP19FLA that was used in the 2000 and 2001 Audi A4's with the 1.8T so I'm guessing that the transmission in my car was swapped from an older A4. Could this be why my coding won't work?

Below is my autoscan.

Same TCM in some other 2004:
https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4978415-b5-vw-passat-tranny-codes
https://www.passatworld.com/threads/tiptronic-5-4-abrupt-downshifting.357490/
https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?3140

And in fact, I can only find that part number in 2004 model cars. All three are coded the same as yours. Now this doesn't mean the transmission itself wasn't swapped, but it's a pretty clear that the TCM wasn't and that 0001104 is the "correct" factory coding.

I would like to change to 0001032 which would give me old strategy shifting, "sport" mode", and AWD (North America). What am I doing wrong? Do I need a security access code?
I do not think a security access code is required. Make sure you coding changes with key on, engine off. The TCM is almost certain to reject coding changes if the engine is running. Usually "Request out of Range" means your coding is requesting some feature that the module's firmware doesn't support, so try changing just one thing at a time, for example the Tiptronic Shift Strategy, or the DSP selection.

Speaking of the latter, were are you getting the '3' in the second-to-last digit? I don't see that documented as a valid option anywhere.

Thank you so much for the quick response. Even when I try changing a single digit, say the last digit to a 2, I get the same error 31 message. I would think that since I have a north American 4motion car that it would allow me to code it as such. And I agree with you that 3 is not listed as an option in the coding but I found a thread on passatworld where someone was able to code their b5.5 passat 4motion with a three.

The next thing I would try is a different value for the WSC and non-zero values for the Importer and Equipment Number. You may be able to tweak these on the Coding screen before saving a coding, but if not, set them on the Options screen, User Interface and Identification tab:

options-2.png

Custom recommended values:
WSC: 02628
Importer: 444
Equipment Number: 29584

After setting them there, click [Save], then exit and re-start VCDS for them to take effect.

I can't guarantee this will be effective, but it doesn't cost much to try.

No such luck. I see that a number of others have the same 1104 coding for their transmission but they are able to change the second to last digit to a 3 giving them a 1134 code. I can't imagine that changing from 1104 to 1102 will make much difference but the fact that I cannot change anything is frustrating. Are there any ways to force coding or any tricks to get around the error 31 message?

I don't know if this will apply to an older car such as this, but changing stuff that effects emissions (which a gearbox shifting strategy change will probably do) is also usually harder to change. Again, I don't know if this applies to this generation.

Thank you for your input. I tried 1134 and 1034 and both worked. The only thing I cant change is the last digit which still seems odd since I do in fact have a north American 4motion car and not a fwd.
