Good morning,

Recently purchased and repaired a 2004 TOUAREG V6 3.2L that was a crank but no start car. Replaced both fuel pumps and re-wired the drivers side plenum ebox. Now the car is on the road (with many thanks to Dana, Uwe and Jack).

No check engine lights of any kind.

2 warnings regarding brake pads and one flat tire - not concerning.

PROBLEM:

I was driving the car with my wife and I was testing the gear box. Shifting between the normal "D" drive and the manual triptronic gears "1,2,3,4,5,6" for only a moment.

When I went to return the shift lever from the manual triptronic to the auto "D" drive it was difficult to get it back in to "D" drive, but it did resume normal automatic gear shifting.

Then unexpectetly/unwantedly the display on the dash would display the individual gear that it was in "1,2,3,4,5,6" and it would not shift out of the gear that it was in-second gear at the time and the revs went about 3500 going slow in my neighborhood.

I parked the Touareg and put the shift lever back in park. Then shifted back in to "D" drive and everything was again normal.

It happened again this morning on my way to work. Driving along normally in "D" drive and the revs spiked. Again with the dash displaying all of the individual gears "1,2,3,4,5,6" and it was on second gear.

Again pulled over and shifted to park. Again, then shifted to "D" drive and finished the drive to work.

Is there something that could be causing the car to unwantingly shift into triptronic manual mode with no codes or faults?

I will get a fresh auto scan when I get home tonight.

Is this something that I can address with the VCDS cable/software?

Thanks David

Given its behavior with the display, I'm reasonably confident that it will have one or more relevant fault codes stored. Please scan it and post the results. :)

Yep, there should be a fault code as per Uwe's suggestion and I'm gonna guess ... it'll be related to F189 in some way. If so, check MVB 013 when it acts up:

Code:
013,1,Selector Lever,Position,Range: P/R/N/D/S/Manual/Error
013,2,Multi-Function,Switch (F125),00001001 = P\n00001100 = R\n00000101 = N\n00000110 = D/Tip\n00001111 = S\n00001101 = P-R (Intermediate Position) OR R-N (Intermediate Position)\n00000111 = N-D (Intermediate Position) OR D-S (Intermediate Position)
; 00001001 = P
; 00001100 = R
; 00000101 = N
; 00000110 = D/Tip
; 00001111 = S
; 00001101 = P-R (Intermediate Position) OR R-N (Intermediate Position)
; 00000111 = N-D (Intermediate Position) OR D-S (Intermediate Position)
013,3,Tiptronic Switch,(F189)
013,4,Tiptronic (F189) &&,Tiptronic (E389),000xxxx1 = Tiptronic Switch in Steering Wheel (E389): Down\n000xxx1x = Tiptronic Switch in Steering Wheel (E389): Up\n000xx1xx = Tiptronic Switch in Selector Lever (F189): Down\n000x1xxx = Tiptronic Switch in Selector Lever (F189): Recognized\n0001xxxx = Tiptronic Switch in Selector Lever (F189): Up
; 000xxxx1 = Tiptronic Switch in Steering Wheel (E389): Down
; 000xxx1x = Tiptronic Switch in Steering Wheel (E389): Up
; 000xx1xx = Tiptronic Switch in Selector Lever (F189): Down
; 000x1xxx = Tiptronic Switch in Selector Lever (F189): Recognized
; 0001xxxx = Tiptronic Switch in Selector Lever (F189): Up

Center console F189 problems aren't unheard of (that's the tiptronic switch) however the TCM is located under the passenger seat with wiring run to it along the floor and right side A pillar based on memory. Any wiring on the floor area of the vehicle may have more of those lovely splices (containing magic green fairy dust) so do make sure that all wiring and connection points to/from the TCM are checked before ordering any parts.

Here is the latest scan...

still has a lot of "fault to ground" and "intermittent signal" error messages.

I would say you have some source of +12 that's dropping out. Check wiring diagrams to find a common point where the shifter and some of those things that have "Short to ground" faults get power from.

Good morning,

I have not had a chance to inspect the wiring connections yet in the passenger footwell as Dana replied, but I do have one update.

The Treg will NO longer shift at all into the "D" drive as it did intermittently before and will only shift while in "S" sport mode.

Would this lead more towards a faulty F189 module?
Or does it still sound like a common power draw/bad ground electrical issue?

Thanks and at least its driving :D

Good morning,

After more driving the transmision problem (only driving normally in sport "s" mode) is indeed intermittent. Vary rarely the car will sucessfully enter drive "d" and run normally-instead of manual shift mode 1,2,3,4,5,6 (with the shifter in the "d" position, but this is still rare)

Given all of the electrical issues that I have had with the driver's side plenum ebox I am hesistant to start anywhere else before ruling out the ebox.

Thus, I rented an electrial tool (below) to test the receptacles in the ebox with the relays removed. Here are the reading that I got.

The meter tests the 30, 86 & 85 pin receptacles for Ground "G" for Green & Power "R" for Red. I have marked any non-reading as "X".

I tested all (4) 404 relays and the #53, #100 & #167 relays.

404 relay #1 (XR) (XR) (GR)
404 realy #2 (XR) (XR) (GR)
404 relay #3 (GR) (XR) (GR)
404 relay #4 (GR) (GR) (XR)

#53 relay (XR) (XR) (GX)

#100 relay (GR) (XR) (GR)

#167 relay (GR) (XR) (GR)

QUESTIONS: THIS MAY BE A SILLY QUESTION, BUT SHOULD ALL OF THE 30, 86 & 85 RELAY PIN RECEPTACLES BE READING (GR)-meaning good power and ground at each?

Thank you very much in advance as always and HAPPY V-DUBBING!!!

Questions regarding the shifting problem (car will not enter "d" drive or shift between manual triptronic gears)...

Could this issue be caused solely by faulty magnets on the triptronic shifter?

I read a few threads regarding problems with the magnets on the transmission shift lever and thought that this could be a possibility.

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, I am now, but I apparently still do not know how to properly post pics.

What do you think Uwe of faulty shift lever magnets as the root of my shifting problem?

You need to host them on a site that doesn't care who is requesting them. I like imgur.com but there are plenty of others.

I am not familiar enough with the shifter in question to make an intelligent comment, sorry.

Wiring problem......or corrosion in shifter from maybe a sugar beverage spilled or water ingress?
