Hi everyone, new to the Forum and seeking a little guidance with what I believe to be a CAN Bus issue. I’ve had some helpful assistance from Dana by email and have checked her suggestions out and everything seems to be ok. The Gateway is next on her list which is where I could do with some wiser eyes than mine. I need to take the Glove Box out next to get to it.
My question is how do I definitively prove that the Gateway is or isn’t the issue with nothing but a voltmeter?!
Plus any other ideas welcome if we can rule the Gateway out.
My belief is that this is a wiring problem rather than a sensor issue. Could very well be wrong about that.
Car drives well for it’s age, like me, and has no issues under hard braking. Brake pedal hisses a bit ( always has I think ) when pressed but no effort required to brake the car and behaves as it’s supposed to when started up with the pedal depressed. Mechanic at the MOT test station said he could find nothing wrong mechanically with the Brakes or steering and passed it with an ‘Advisory”
Vehicle is a UK Audi A3 2004 2.0 FSi 8p1 AXW engine. ( no Turbo ) Owned from new.
Issue: ESP light ( triangle with an arrow round it ) is permanently on.
ESP switch on the console doesn’t illuminate when pressed to switch ESP on or off.
No other warning lights E.g ABS
Light came on travelling in a straight line up the Motorway at 70Mph ish. Not using the brakes at the time.
There are some engine codes and the occasional mis-fire that I don’t care about until the ESP stuff is sorted. Ditto the Radio unless you think it's a contributing factor. It’s an old car and cost is a consideration as the new London Low Emission Zone could be the kiss of death in a couple of years anyway. On the other hand it's Yellow and I like it!
Testing at the OBD11 port through a break-out box reveals
Ignition on Engine off
pins: 6 to 14 67.1 Ohms Battery dis-connected
16 to 4 12.7 V
16 to 5 12.7 V
4 to 5 0.4mv
6 to 4 2.48V
14 to 4 2.48V
In the engine bay with engine running at idle.
Battery Voltage 14.5V
B- to Chassis ground 7.5mV
B- to Engine Block 29.8mV
VCDS MVBs result in No Communication with CAN Gateway and selecting ABS Bleeps 3 times and Flashes the ABS light also No Communication.
Clearing DTCs doesn’t clear the dash warning light.
The No Comms is an issue I would guess and identical voltages on CAN High and Low too?
Different earth readings might point to something and is the Ohms reading acceptable?
I know I’m over thinking this so where would you go next?
