Yes this is perfectly safe to do. One tip is to disconnect the battery before doing any major work to the electrical system. Simply undo the negative terminal of the battery.

I guess you measured the can connections as well and they were ok?

Managed to plug the T38 connector into the additional second hand replacement ABS pump and controller unit purchased today (identical part number in every respect to the original btw). Plugged in VCDS and same problem with no communication :confused:

I checked the CAN-H and CAN-L pins of the T38 and measured 2.64V for pin 26 abd 2.40v for pin14. As I'm not achieving the 3.5V could this mean a problem with the CAN wiring?

I unplugged the ecu in order to facilitate access to the abs connector. When I performed the scan, the ecu was reconnected and I started the engine.

When I checked the CAN pins T38/26 and T38/14, the engine was running and under load as I switched on the headlights, rear heated window and a/c.

Can I suggest load testing both battery feeds and 1x ignition feed and both negatives. at the plug.
As previously you have said you have checked with a multi meter, which is good and you’ve replaced fuses. Also good. But what if I wire is corroded it my show the correct voltage but not carry enough current. Same as a fuse fault.
A headlight bulb made up with a couple of wires would be a reasonable load tester.
Test all positive and negatives with this at the abs plug with it disconnected.

Also a multi meter voltage test will show an average voltage of a switching signal. So the CAN low will probably be a lower average voltage than the CAN high. Which looks like what your getting. If that’s also at the abs plug with the plug disconnected then there probably a signal getting to the module. But there’s a bit more to testing the CAN than that but only if you have to. You should confirm the other wiring first.

I am going to give this a try, to check the load / current.

Another thing I'm going to try is to split open the abs module to check for any dry joints on the pcb.

Checked the fuses to the abs module again. The SC4 fuse indicated a potential problem with the wire. Potentially a break. Ran another cable with a 1 amp fuse direct to the abs module connector. It was the red and blue wire. Did a scan and managed to have communication with abs controller again! Now, for the next stage to code the abs module and calibrate the steering angle sensor. Next job will be to check the wiring harness. I think the break in this and potentially other wires is going to be below the battery holder as there was historic evidence of corrosion there due to a past battery leak before we owned the car. Thank you all for your help. By the way splitting open of this abs controller is not a good idea. I tried doing this with a Dremel on a spare broken unit and it was not fruitful. The plastic cover is bonded to the metal case.

As far as I can tell the identical 6R0 907 379 AJ module was installed so it should have accepted the factory coding string. Please make sure:

1) Battery voltage isn't low resulting in the error. You might try both with the engine running and/or with the ignition on (engine off) but with a battery charger connected.
2) The new coding you are entering is the same length. If you drop a digit or pick up a space at the end the controller will reject it.

After we eliminate those as possible causes I support it couldn't hurt to test some SA codes. I would make sure 40168 is accepted and you might even try 40304 as well since both are confirmed valid codes for this module type. Assuming those are accepted but don't get you any further in regards to coding I might try: 09892

Feedback would be highly appreciated in regards to 09892 (even if it isn't accepted).

I had engine on and running on idle.
The battery is a new and uprated varta silver so it is unlikely to be low voltage or current (but I do have a CTEK MX 5.0 so can connect that and try again)
I checked the length of the code that I cut and paste into coding by also cutting and pasting it to the scan file as a check and the string length matched.

I would like to try your suggestion of SA codes but what is the procedure?

I've seen the video about 40 168 but that was to be done after successful coding of the abs module. Please could you send further guidance?

Thanks Andrew,

I sent you an email primarily to verify that SA codes 40168, 40304 and 09892 were all accepted and didn't directly help with coding. Time permitting, please do make sure that connecting to 03-ABS, clicking Security Access - 16, entering each of the above codes (one at a time) followed by Do it doesn't result in any error messages. Make sure to try coding after any that are accepted to see if that changes the Error 22: Conditions not correct or request sequence error results.

At that point we may have success with a special 6R0-907-37x-ESP82.clb label file that will allow you to test a combination of SA code and diagnostic mode changes but I want to make sure the module doesn't have lock time and that we don't overlook anything simple.

Your coding looks correct to me. You should not need SA to do coding of the module.
