Hi All,

My first post on this forum. My nieces VW Polo 6R 1.2s has an issue. The red ABS light, amber steering wheel light and red exclamation symbols are lit up in the instrument cluster. Also, the speedometer does not move always at zero. The rev counter is okay and the car drives and brakes perfectly fine. I have changed the ABS module but still have the following errors after running VCDS.

I have (in chronological order):

(a) Firstly cleaned the fuse plate on top of the battery of any oxidation and checked all fuses
(b) Replaced the fuse plate on top of the battery
(c) Cleaned all the earth points (Battery negative, and the two earth points with brown wires below the airbox)
(d) Changed the battery for a new Varta E44 Silver Dynamic 77ah
(e) Checked for oxidation on the ABS wiring loom connector to the ABS module/controller
(f) Checked for oxidation on the two connectors to the ECU
(g) Checked the connector at the back of the instrument cluster
(h) Changed the ABS control module for a second-hand part

The first time that I experienced a problem with this car, the speedometer was working intermittently and the ABS and above warning lights were lit intermittently too. However, they are always on now when the car is used and the speedometer does not work at all.

Can anyone help with providing any further advice please? I cannot seem to find a wiring diagram as I would like to check the power feed into the ABS module - any hints on how to fault find the wiring would be greatly appreciated!

When the communication issue is sorted the coding from the original unit should be accepted. Per an earlier e-mail (when the original ABS was occasionally communicating) it was:

Code:
        Address 03: ABS Brakes (J104) Labels:. 6R0-907-37x-ESP82.clb
        Part No SW: 6R0 907 379 AJ HW: 6R0 907 379 AF
        Component: ESP8.2i front H05 0001
        Revision: --------
        Coding: 230224E3216D00B2C42624E684D100801100

6R0 907 379 AJ was revised 5 times .. so if the wiring is OK you may want to consider the possibility that the 2nd hand module may be flaky. I hope not - but we encounter that with used MK60EC1 modules often and it can make someone second guess their original diagnosis because the replacement was used with the same (old) part number.

Hi Dana, Many thanks for your email support and reply to my post. Was hoping that the abs module replacement was going to sort out the communication. Like you say, it could be that the second hand part may also be faulty. Just thought to check the power, grounds and canbus for the abs module to try narrow down further. Kind Regards, Andrew

Hi iichel,

Do you have the pinout for the abs module wiring loom connector? With power and earth pins labelled?

Kind Regards,

Andrew

The second hand part that I purchased was also 6R0 907 379 AJ and 6R0 907 379 AF H05 (does this signify that it is still 8.2?)

That is still 8.2i so you don't have to change your wiring. Did you already check your current wiring?

Thank you, that's good to hear.

Not yet, I'm going to have a look today.

By the way, I used to live in Den Haag and work in Rijswijk for Shell

Yes, I enjoyed my stay in the Netherlands. Still keep in touch with friends there.

I've managed to check the power in T38/1 & T38/25 via grounds at T38/13 & T38/38. 12v measured so power feed is good via the connector.

How do I check T38/35 using my multimeter?

Just checked, it's around 11.8v from T38/35 to ground pin T38/13.

So, does this mean that my second hand abs module is flaky?

Can you also verify can is good? A 'quick and dirty' method is too measure voltage vs gnd (should be around 3.5V on both high and low).

Thank you, I'll check T38/26 and T38/14 for CAN high and low respectively. If this is 3.5V then what will be the next step?

By the way, when I started having problems with this ABS system, prior to the replacement module installation, there was a really loud popping sound from the abs pump area. Could this be a sign that the actual pump failed too. Would a faulty abs pump cause the electronics in the abs module to be destroyed too? Just wondering if I should replace the complete abs pump and abs module next and to bleed the brake system...

Did you check the voltage under load? Jack would say that asshole fuses can give asshole voltages. Meaning a hairline crack or corroded fuse can still give an unloaded voltage of 12v.

If power GND and can are verified to be good, I'd start blaming a faulty module.

Yes, all associated fuses were changed for new ones.

When I made the checks today, the car key was on ignition but the engine was not running. For access to the abs connector, I removed the airbox and ecu.

Managed to purchase another second hand abs module complete with pump. Is it okay to simply disconnect the connector and attach it to this pump and then use VCDS to see if I regain comms? Is this possible/safe to do without the risk of damaging other components on the vehicle?
