2015 Audi A5 Adblue System Fault - P204F Reductant System Performance Bank 1 Fault

Hi all - first post.....

I have a 2015 A6 (Ultra engine etc.) - wife phoned me the other week while I was away from home with work telling me that the Adblue needed filling (she had the information message on the dashboard). I asked my 18yo son to fill the Adblue tank as I usually do it myself, don't usually have any issues with the fill. Famous last words.

After my son had filled the Adblue tank and had started the car to check that the information message had been cleared, they were presented with the Adblue System Fault message and amber/yellow warning triangle on the dashboard. I'm now back home trying to diagnose the issue.

My working hypothesis is that the tank may have been over-filled and that the internal Adblue sensor can't detect the amount of fluid in the tank.

I ran a scan using VCDS the other day, output below - I've received the P204F 00 [101] - Reductant System Performance Bank 1 fault code.

I'm thinking that the next step is to

1. Reset of SCR tank level detection and then
2. Reset the SCR lock.

Anything else that the forum would recommend?

In before Jack points out there is a firmware update for this ECM, looks like you should be at firmware level 1649, not 0655. I think it would be safe to assume firmware updates are tied to "emission concerns" :rolleyes: so.... check with your dealer. I don't know what is going on at your side of the pond with extended warranty but it looks like if this were a US market car, you'd be covered.

You could perform the 'resets' ... however, I would suggest an inspection and a test of the N474-Reducing Agent Injector (AdBlue) because this sounds like there is a lack of reducing agent flow.

With the fault code "Reductant System Performance", this sounds like there is a commanded flow of reducing agent/AdBlue, however there is a lack of effectiveness of the reducing agent/AdBlue as seen by the ECM.

The test below is for the 3.0L TDI engines, so you may get less than the specified amount out of the N474 injector. And do not let the term 'injector' fool you, the flow out of the N474 is a dribble.. even though there is about 5bar of pressure behind it.

To run the N474 output quantity test..

Prerequisites:
- Battery maintainer connected
- Key on Engine off
- No ECM fault codes, clear codes
- Transmission in Park

3)
Select [Adaptation]
Select [Adaptation for metering quantity measurement]
Normal read value = [04]
- Change to [02] , [Save] This enables the Basic Settings, a key cycle will reset this to a value of [04]

4)
Select [Basic Settings]
Select [SCR metering quantity test] [Go!]
[On/Off/Next]

This BS test will run for about 10 minutes (or more), during this time the N474 will 'slowly' release AdBlue, (spec=25 to 30ml).

Thanks for the comments guys.

Unfortunately, due to the current lock-down 'situation', no local dealership is open so might not be able to address the firmware issue for a while.... Is that documented in any TSB's out of interest so I can show them to my local dealer when the time comes?

I will take a look at the N474 output quantity test in the meantime which I think I can do from home.

Will report back.

So I went for a 1 day subscription of the Audi erwin software and after sticking in the P204F fault code, found a Technical Service Handbook (TSH) relating to my problem (I'm only reproducing the pertinent elements here - not sure what the copyright agreements are):

Both the Customer Statement and Workshop Findings (via VCDS) match the information in the TSH:

Customer statement:

In the driver information system the message: "Reducing agent: system error. No engine start in . . . km! See service wallet." The yellow reducing agent warning lamp also comes on.

Workshop findings:

The customer complaint can be reproduced and the following event entry is logged in the engine control unit: P204F00 reducing agent system bank 1 faulty.

The TSH goes on to tell me that the Technical Background is Incorrect software in the engine control unit and that the technician should:

Check the SCR system for leaks and the level of the reducing agent ..... repair the vehicle or top up the reducing agent. Check the software version of the engine control unit and if necessary update it .... To reset the message in the instrument cluster with ODIS always perform an inducement journey after the update independently of this TPI (guided test drive for functional check).


I can see the correct new software version and will be having a chat with my (not so friendly) local Audi dealership and my other friendly (but not so local) Audi dealership to see who can resolve this issue for me without wanting to charge me £1000.

I will be running the 'at-homes' tests mentioned earlier in this threat at some point this week too, just for complete piece of mind.

Tonight I managed to run a couple of tests on the Reducing Agent System system. I've included my test output below.

I was initially worried in the Reducing agent system: current status was reporting COSCR_NOPRESSURECTL , but after running the engine for a few minutes, that changed to COSCR_PRESSURECTL , also my Reducing agent pump: activation went from 0% to 30% to 50%, and Pressure sensor for reducing agent: measured pressure went from -85 hPa to 687 hPa and 4998 hPa, which all seems positive.

Finally, the Long-term adaptation of reduction agent dosage reported a consistent 1.00, which (according to DrPeter) implies that 'VW/Audi cheating on the tests or SW flash update needed to cheat (Just a joke)' :-)

I've included my logs below and would appreciate any advice the community may have based on the output contained here. I am completely clueless in this area, but it would appear that the system appears to be working correctly, which makes me think that this is a software problem as mentioned earlier.

Hi,

The value for [Long-term adaptation of reduction agent dosage] displays the current value and a value of "1.00" is the starting point or no adjustment of the amount of AdBlue injected has taken place.

Think of it like Air/Fuel mixture rations... rich vs. lean. The ECM wants to keep the amount of AdBlue injected at the correct amount and there are 'limits'. When the limits are reached, fault code(s) will set.

It is strange that your Long Term is at "1.00", one would expect a little adjustment (+/-) ...

Remember...
Greater than 1.00 = adding more reducting agent
and
Less than 1.00 = taking away reducting agent​

The AdBlue pressure is good, [Pressure sensor for reducing agent: measured pressure] - That should be around 5 bar or 5,000 hpa when the system is active.


I would agree, before you start taking things apart or replacing things, you should update the ECM.

There are several Audi and Volkswagen Self Study Programs that are available that explain the AdBlue and diesel engine systems.

This one is good, 941803 Audi 3.0-liter V6 TDI With Clean Diesel System and with a subscription to erWin, you can also find all the factory repair manuals and wiring diagrams, all available for downloading/printing for later use.


Again, I hope this helps and learn all that can be learned.. or learn until you become dangerous, then learn some more.. :p - be safe!

So just wanted to provide an update on post to close things out.

The car went into my local-ish (but reputable) Audi dealership this morning (first availability after lock-down), along with a print-out of the fault code from VCDS and the Technical Service Handbook referenced above. I had the master technician call me back who talked through my thoughts on the fault and was in agreement that a software update was the correct course of action. Software updated and the fault is resolved!

I also had my brake fluid changed for a total charge of £170-ish. I think that might the cheapest visit to the Audi dealership ever....

I think it might have done!

I just checked the cost of the software update on the invoice and that was £75 (ex. VAT / Sales Tax) which in hindsight is not even half the quoted cost of a diagnostic scan (I was quoted £180 on the phone, before any work would be done).

I did ask whether this software upgrade would be covered under warranty as per the TPI, may be it was. I'll find out in the morning when I go and pick-up the car.
