    Audi A4 B6 (2004) MFSW 4-Spoke Retrofit

Car: 2004 Audi A4 B6 1.9 TDI SE Avant Multitronic

My A4 came with RNS-E retrofitted by a previous owner and it works fine, I really like it. I fancied swapping my standard 4-spoke steering wheel for the multifunction version of the same wheel (not heated or tiptronic buttons).

I thought it would be more straightforward (and cheaper) than it's ended up being but I've come this far and I'm determined to make the damn thing work.

OK, so far I've switched my standard airbag for a MFSW one without telephone facility (8E0880201AB), fitted a brand new MFSW airbag harness (8E0971589S), a MFSW control module (61340351) and the wiring harness for the stereo buttons (8Z0971589E).

I've also re-coded the stereo and the steering wheel with VCDS. The coding I used for the stereo is 03011115 and for the steering wheel 02042. The car has all three steering column stalks ... indicators, cruise, wipers (front and rear) and computer.

The steering column control module is 8E0953549N which research seems to be a midline model and capable of controlling a MFSW. I'm not sure what slip ring mine has as I haven't yet been able to remove the upper cowling to find the part number. But I think it is part number 8E0953541E. I won't know for sure until I can buy a long T8 Torx to get the cowling off.

Anyway, the buttons are dead as a dead thing. None of them work or illuminate when the headlights are on. VCDS throws up the following fault code ...

    01426 - Controls in Steering Wheel (E221) 49-00 - No Communications

No airbag faults are coming up and the horn works fine. So it's just the MFSW side of things that's not right.

To double-check I've tried it with two spare MFSW airbags, a spare steering wheel controller and a spare stereo button harness and still no joy.

I feel like I'm so near, yet so far. Do I need to replace yet another part? Column control module and/or slip ring? Is my coding wrong?

Any help would be really appreciated.

    TIA

Are you using the slip-ring from non-mfsw on your new mfsw?

I'm still using the slip-ring that came with the car. I haven't been able to find another that specifies that it is for use with a MFSW.

Yes, otherwise buttons will never work (unless you just need some buttons to press) ...

My job for the weekend then (apart from painting the lounge ). Fingers crossed I'll finally have a fully functioning steering wheel.
