HI,

Im a back yard mech and apologize for lack of any terminology

Scanned car and got a 00287 rear right speed sensor code

Removed both rear Spees sensors ( left side just for comparison) Probed Right side has .5 Volts, Probed Left side and had 12V. Still on Left side I found the constant 12V (think it was black wire) then moved my lead to opposite wire and probed it w/1 lead on multi meter, 2nd lead to chassis ground and set to Millivolt scale and turned wheel Very slowly and can clearly see millivolt signal. to take it 1 step further I did same procedure for front left wheel and almost the same readings.

Went back to problem wheel, right rear and had only .5 volts with no millivolt signal.

I also cked the 2 fuses under the hood on drivers side i think they were F16 & F23 and they were both good

Today I am going to pull back interior apart and locate Speed sesnser inside the car and probe there to see if i have 12v to rule out an broken wire leading to the sensor and do a better visual ck for any rodent damage to wires.

Im leaning towards a bad ABS module? If module is bad can VCDS program a used junk yard ABS module or doe stealership have to program it? And if so any idea how much that should cost? I can replace the module myself just may need a Bleeding procedure

Any thoughts or test I can I can perform would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Hi and welcome.

Im leaning towards a bad ABS module? If module is bad can VCDS program a used junk yard ABS module
Although MK60EC1 modules fail with some regularity, this doesn't fit the pattern.

Yes, assuming a replacement module is an appropriate/correct one for the car, you can do it with VCDS.

However I'd strongly suggest verifying all wiring (including its ability to carry current) before you conclude that it needs a module.

Oh, and: Are the sensors on both sides the same? It's not clear to me from what you wrote whether you swapped sensors side-to-side.

Hi,

thank you for the reply

To answer your question the 2 sensors are not physically the same there is a left and right sensor due to the angle of the connection, other than that they behave the same way.

I only went to the left rear only for a properly functioning sensor for reference on how the right side should be working.

Does anybody have a wiring diagram or a test procedure? I have not verified voltage from inside the car before it exits the wheel well to rule out any broken connections from that point.

What would be a common symptom of a bad ABS module?

Thank you

Update,

wanted to thank everyone for help however in dealing with this I have spoke to many people and you get people who ask if the there is gas in the tank or if the oil has been changed??? Really!!!! Anyway I apologize for ranting :banghead::banghead:

OK to help someone, What I found under the passenger side rear door under foot sill (piece of trim molding that covers the carpet edge to the body) sorry not sure what to call that?? Anyway underneath that piece thats were all the wiring is and wiring leading out to right rear speed sensor. VW thought it would be a great idea not only to change the color of the wiring from Grey to black and blue to brown but to make a splice right there. What I ended up doing was pulling the big plug at the ABS module up at front of car (What Bitch that was) and check continuity of the wring from plug to rear speed sensor and found and open. Started pulling everything apart and VIOLA I found the broken splice in the back.

Im not a mechanic but as I mentioned in 1st post I set my volt meter to DC Volts and measure a good reading sensor Left rear (only for a reference to see how a good speed sensor should read) and had 12V between the 2 wires in the sensor connector. Then I took 1 lead of my meter and placed it on the body (good ground) and other lead of meter to 1 of the 2 wires on the speed sensor wiring testing each wire. I found 1 wire was constant 12V and the other wire sent a Millivolt signal to ABS module. When I found the milivolt wire I turned the wheel VERY slowly and I could see the voltage change sending signal telling me the hub was good ( think its called a reluctor). Now I talked to another person and they said it was suppose to send A/C voltage but I was able to read on DC voltage so Im not sure if what I did it correct but it worked for me.

Then I went back to right rear sensor connector which was giving me the fault, I tested between 2 wires (black & Brown) and had no voltage!!! After troubleshooting described above and repaired broken wire I then had 12V, problem solved

Hope this helps someone else, I know If i had this info it would have saved me a LOT of time and not wasting time on checking the oil :thanks:

Well done on the find.

I talked to another person and they said it was suppose to send A/C voltage but I was able to read on DC voltage

It's DC voltage, but it steps high and low, which is sort of like half-wave rectified AC voltage (Not really though :D)

It funny how many people think they're car savvy... they seem to be the same ones who can feel the extra power from new oil and changing the oil and all the filters may possibly fix the conrod poking out of the block etc
