My brother has a 2012 VW Caddy 1.6 petrol. I jumped into it the other day and when braking, it felt like the car was on ice and pulled to the left.
Got it on a hoist, checked and found that the front right caliper was not braking (at all) and brake was beginning to rust - obviously been some time since it worked. Don't understand how he didn't notice!

It is a pretty new car - done about 50,000km and driving well (except for the brakes).

There are no errors on the VCD scan, no lights illuminated. It is just the front right brake that is not working.

Found that there was air in the line and carried out the following:

1. Did a bleed conventionally (push brake 10 times, push and hold, open bleed screw, close bleed screw, repeat x 5. Starting from left rear, then right rear, then left front and lastly right front). Once completed, the front right caliper started locking. Took it for a test drive and as soon as I press the brake, front right stopped working. Front left and rears still working fine.
2. Bled it again, caliper starts working, took it for a test drive, with same result - front right stops working.
3. Decided to try something different. Completely flushed the system with a Motive pressure bleeder and eliminated any chance of air with new brake fluid, tested brakes moving a few metres forward, brake hard, a few metres in reverse, brake hard and it front right continued to work. Took it for another test drive and front right brake stopped working.
4. Went onto VCDs, did a bleed with the ABS pump, brake worked on the hoist, but again, the second the car is taken on a test drive, the brake stopped working.

Something to note:
When bleeding the brakes, conventional and using Motive pressure bleeder, the front right would not bleed until the ignition was turned to the ON position or the car was started...

Also, the brake pedal works as it should and is not soft.

I have searched a lot of the forums and have not come across anyone with the same issue... I might be wrong, but my understanding is that the right rear brake works with the front left and rear left works with right front. Brake pressure moving to opposite corners needs to be equal in pressure and if there is a difference in pressure, the line with the lower pressure gets closed... but if the lines do not have air in them, then there can only be an equal amount of pressure at all times whether the brake is applied or not.

All the information above keeps pointing me to the ABS pump and/or control unit - but there are no fault codes or dashboard lights... Anyone have any idea on what the problem could be?

HI Rmoor3,
Front and rear brakes do not have equal pressure, as the rear brake would try to lock all the time. Yes this does sound like the ABS module, Vauxhall Corsa D's have a common problem just like this. An Autoscan to confirm what ABS is fitted would be good.

Hi HMC,
Thanks for the response. That makes more sense wrt the brake pressure.

Here is the last scan done:

Although my suspected valve issue was permanent, https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?16431-MK60-ABS-blockage may help shed some light.

I guess there's a chance yours is a mechanical issue causing and ABS valve to stick, or even an electrical one, holding a valve.

While I think it's very unlikely, there could be a hose issue... but I'd expect the brake to get stuck on sometimes too though.

The thing that became obvious on mine, was the wheel with the blocked valve got no brake pressure, and the wheel diagonal to it, on the same circuit, got too much! Sharp braking on a smooth gravel surface showed it clearly, but I could also feel the car pull t one side under heavy brakes or if creeping down a steep incline (like waiting in a line of cars etc).

Hi NZDubNurd,
Thanks for this. This sounds like the exact same problem. I have removed the block and found that it is in fact blocked. I am going to see if I can find/borrow/steal a 2054 block from somewhere and test. Will update next week.

The OP registered for support so I changed his status to Verified VCDS User. I'll move this to the Car Repair Support sub-forum.

Hello and welcome OP.......

Did you unplug ABS module and test to see if mechanical function on road test with proper default bias & in controlled environment to bifurcate the brake functions?

If it does or did test A-OK as aforementioned question, did you consider changing the ABS module yet or complete assembly based on completed test observations?

I love pictures of Zimbabwe sand pits please post some in bar!

One day I'm going there on a CR500!

Sorry for the delayed response. COVID is still here.

Jack, you are a genius. Unplugged the ABS module (car was not happy), took it on a road test and brakes all worked fine and continued to work fine. Issue is the controller.

Once we are allowed out, I will post some photos.

Just to follow up on this post:
After running the car with the ABS module unplugged. Decided to connect it up again after about a week. Everything worked fine and to this day, 2 years later, brakes and ABS working as they should
