Hi All

This is my first post. I have bought a crashed damaged Audi S3 8v 2017 facelift model which is coming along well but I have run into a problem when installing the headlights. my car has the LED headlights which I had to replace along with most of the ballast since the old ones were damaged. since installing the new ones I cant seem to get my adaptive headlights to work, nor can I get the main beams to work either. The DRL and indicators are fine and working. in VCDS when I try to do basic headlight settings, I get an error saying "conditions not correct or request sequence error" any help will be much appreciated.

^^^Pauls: difficult to be precise - but the DTC s on the hexD6 and hexD7 modules are telling (IMO)! Are you certain that the replacement headlamp fittings are compatible with the car? And the 0837 fault on hexD7 is suggestive of a wiring/connector problem (I'm guessing of course)

The headlights were the same part code as the lights that were damaged, the same with the ballast, all of them are the same part code

Pauls: hmm........ OK. Of course anything is possible, but IMO "implausible" DTC s are always suggestive (at least in the first instance) of something physically odd with either the equipment, or the wiring/connectors to the equipment. If you are 101% certain that the old fittings had the same part numbers AND software version numbers - then was there any damage, or were there any repairs done to the headlamp wiring loom? And, have you confirmed the integrity of the wires/connectors for the right-side high-beam (related to the 0837 - Supply Voltage for High-Beam DTC)?

I also note the U1014 DTC in the hex55 module - so the car believes that this module has been incorrectly coded. What's the history of this module - it is original - if so, what were the long-code /channel changes (look in the C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debug directory on your laptop)?

Hi DV52 all the modules are replacements as the originals were all damaged in the accident. the main issue I have is the main beams are not working. If I can get that working, that would be great.

Paul: yes - I understand the problem with the main-beam lights - we are both focused on solving the same problem!! ;)

But as you can see from the DTCs in the auto-scan, the principal modules that control the headlight fittings (i.e. the LCM s @ address hexD7 and hexD6) don't recognize the type of lamps that the car is asking to be controlled. So clearly, there is something very odd about the retrofit.

It's almost certain that the "Open circuit" DTC in the right-side LCM is caused by wonky wiring, or a faulty connection (I assume the lamps are new). So, you should be able to delete this DTC by judicious tracing of the right-side main-beam wiring.

As I have already said, IMHO implausible DTCs tend to be a special type of error that in general are suggestive of an exogenous cause: a problem outside the module (please note my deliberate use of the words "in general" and "suggestive" - this is definitely not always the case). Again IMHO, the fact that your autoscan has the same "implausible" DTC on both LCMs is also telling in your case (i.e. again, "suggestive" of an exogenous cause)- hence my question about compatibility of the new modules.

I'm guessing of course and based on my supposition that it's useful to look elsewhere when fault-finding "implausible" errors, it's possible that these 2 x DTC s could be consequential to the incorrectly coded hex55 unit. I don't have access to the long-code helper screens for your particular range control module to confirm/rule-out this assertion. If the original hex55 module has sufficient life - perhaps you could refit the module and attempt to extract the long-code string and maybe try generating an admap? At least then, you would have first-hand baseline-data which could be replicated into the new module.

But there are others on this forum with deity-like expertise - I'm just a rank amateur! Perhaps one (or more) of their number might proffer a more knowledgeable suggestion?

Paul: I suspect the easiest way of getting both is to generate an adaptation channel map (sometimes shortened in this forum to "admap"). Look at RT's video HERE. This video has a dual purpose, but if you start at about 2:19 minutes, you will learn how to generate an admap for individual UDS control modules like the hex 55 module

At about 2:33 minutes into the video choose different options as follows:
Single controller address = 55
Under "Function", tick Adaptations
Under "output", click the CSV file radio button

the set-up should look like this, but use "55", instead of "09" in the pic:

Then just press the Go button and magic stuff will happen!!

After the process has completed - exit VCDS software and navigate to the directory C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs on your laptop. In this directory you will find the file adpmap-55-8V0-907-357_WAUZZZ8V5HA066631-date-time.CSV. Open this file with a suitable reader and the data will be there!!

So..........I'll ask the obvious question: what happens to your autoscan DTC s if you plug-in the old hex55 channel settings into your new hex55 module and clear the errors ?

hmm...... that's a fairly fundamental question for a VCDS user that's swapping modules to ask!

Try this:
  1. Connect the VCDS cable to the OBD port - connect to your laptop and fire-up the software
  2. On the main VCDS screen click on select under Select Control Module
  3. On the Select Control Module screen, click on 55-Xenon Range
  4. On the Open Controller screen, click on Security Access-16
  5. Enter the magic number 20103 into the Enter security access key box and press Do it!
  6. Back in the Open Controller screen, click on Adaptation - 10
  7. You will then be presented with a screen like below - not the same entries, but the same layout

  8. In the box that I have labelled "1. Enter" type the Tag number for the 1st channel in your list and then select the down-arrow that I have identified as "2."
  9. Select the correct adaptation channel from your list
  10. You will then be presented with a screen like below - not the same entries, but the same layout

  11. Enter the channel setting number from your old module into the New Value box and press Do it!
  12. After acknowledging the prompts, you should see a screen that confirms the changed setting
  13. Repeat for each of the other channels and exit the module screen

Then open the autoscan screen- I like to run an autoscan before clearing DTC s because I then have a "before" record on file.
Press the Clear all DTCs button then run an autoscan

PS: while I still believe that it's worthwhile trying to make the changes to your hex55 module- I'm a tad concerned by the specificity of the numbers in the adaptation channels in your list. I've not made these changes - but the T15 voltage for example, is specified to 3 x decimal places! This might be a number that is generated by a calibration process - perhaps?

paul: I'm sorry that my explanation of this process has become so complicated for you (I can only blame my thick Australian accent and an ageing and deeply deficient intellect) - but yes, my use of the term Tag number is synonymous with the IDE (and sometimes ENG, and sometimes MAS) number.

As for why you can't find the channels - and without intending any offense to Ross-Tech's code-cutters, the VCDS facility is a fairly basic search engine. Anything that's typed into the search box will suffice as a search vector -so you can use any part of the adaptation channel name. Like most search engines, the shorter the the search string, the more hits will be returned in the pull-down list and conversely, the opposite will be true if you increase the characters in the search box.

But you should have confidence that if the admap for the new hex55 module has identified a particular adaptation channel, then if you correctly enter part of that adaptation channel name into the search box - you will get at least one hit returned in the pull-down list. This certainty is up there with the inevitability of death and taxes;)

Your instructions were clear, I just clicked the wrong option, here now is the correct option. Also, I noticed that both headlight fuses were blown in the fusebox inside of the car, I have replaced them both, but it didn't fix the issue. Below is the correct admap reading and both the old and the new were the same.

hmm......... my normal practice in this type of "interesting" diagnostic analysis is to take stock at key points in the exercise. So here's a synopsis of the situation thus far (as I understand from your posts) -ONLY as it relates to the headlights:

First: your auto-scan indicates that the hex55 module is incorrectly coded - but you have advised that in comparing the old and new J745 module, the long-code string and the adaptation channel settings is exactly the same

Second: The hex D6 and hex D7 modules in your auto-scan report "implausible" DTC between the A31 & A27 modules and the type of lamps in the newly installed headlight fittings. Yet your advice is that the part numbers and software versions of the old and new modules are exactly the same.

Third: Whilst I have not asked the specific question, I assume that the actual headlight fittings are exactly the same and that no other modules were changed on the car.

Don't get me wrong - I'm certainly not suggesting that any of your advice is incorrect (quite the opposite - I entirely accept the information provided in your responses). BUT - I'm no sure how to proceed given the 3 x facts above.

Perhaps someone else here can suggest a way forward - maybe the crash data stored in car is implicated in the problem (I can't see why this would apply)?

Thanks for your help Don you been a great help, hopefully, I'll have a light bulb moment and will get this fixed somehow without getting Audi to look at it and charge me a fortune., at least the dip beam work which means I can still drive it at night.
