No fault codes outside it being unhappy with the S2 cats.

When the lights are on and the right blinker is active the right rear tail brake filament turns on and off about every 7 blinks at a reduced intensity. After the the blinker is cancelled a bulb out message is thrown.

The bulb holder is new, bulbs are new, CECM has been replaced with "working condition" used module which acts similarly as the old unit. Cannot find an issue in the wiring by basic diagnostics.

Car does have a Curt trailer light controller that has not caused issues in the past.

Even though there are no fault codes we'll still need to see a full unedited VCDS Auto-Scan

I'll see what I can do later this evening.

What would the scan tell you that error messages won't?

Full system wide scan or just a scan of that module?

Everything; the whole car please. Even in 2003, cars were already a computer network on wheels.

Hi,

As mentioned above by petroldave if you can please post a full auto scan. Once you carry out a full auto scan

You can walk your way to Local C/primary drive > RossTech > scans> open the file. Copy all the information CTRL + A> CTRL + C = clicking a # above in this typo CTRL + V from a full auto scan we can learn and tell you more about the car. Also advise you an appropriate ideal solution for your vehicle. Alternatively please click on the link below on how to post an Auto Scan

These things really are an awesome super computer on wheels. Im not a noobie on computer stuff, just VCDS. Managed to bumble my way though adaptation and coding of the Central Electronics module that I changed out. Trailer light controller was removed tonight. Its a car. If I need to tow Im using a body on frame vehicle like the one parked next to it which is 34 years old a not a computer on wheels. It hardly knows how to pulse an injector.

The controller was tied into a Green/Black wire that is missing on my chiltons wiring diagrams. It was rather crudely spliced in. Its been cleaned up, soldered and shrink wrapped. What is that wire on the right rear tail light assembly?

I do have an aftermarket head unit that sits on CANBUS and sends info to the dash. I do have an aftermarket amp and subs that have completely replaced the OEM amp/sub box. Otherwise the car should be stock.

I couldnt find info on a 01311 code. Its a new one I havnt seen before. The S2 O2 "codes" have gone away (battery recently disconnected for the CECM swap) as has my sticky rear door lock code, for now. No CEL for the cats.

Not comfortable with having my VIN floating around. If anyone from Ross-Tech needs licensing confirmation, please ask and Ill PM.

Current VCDS log: Please excuse formatting.

I couldnt find info on a 01311 code.
One of the CAN buses connected to the instrument cluster is in backup mode, where data can only flow through a single wire rather that the differential signal on a twisted pair. I think it's the one that connects to the radio, but I'm not 100% certain of that. Anyway, it may be an artifact of the aftermarket HU.

If anyone from Ross-Tech needs licensing confirmation
Nah, we know it's legit. In some cases the VIN is needed to build a coding or look stuff up, but that's not the case here.

As for the bulb out message, I'm stumped. I'd expect to see something in the scan about that.

I'm thinking head unit is the cause of that too. It havnt popped up till now and I've had the head unit in there for a while. I bet a cold boot could fix that.

I'm super stumped and getting pretty annoyed at the bulb out. As soon as the lights are cycled the message goes away. I do have a rear fog out which doesn't throw a code until I physically remove the bulb. Probably lost the vacuum on the bulb.

Here is a YouTube of what the bulb does. It's subtile but it turns on and off the brake filament at a reduced intensity. Super unprofessional video but it was originally made for a buddy to see what it is doing.

So, attempt #4 to post. Every time I try to edit a post it gets deleted. I select the text area and the page reloads and deleted my post. Each post is getting shorter and shorter due to level of aggravation of having to do it all over again.

Quick unprofessional clip of what the bulb does while the blinker is on. It's subtle. Gotta run into town tomorrow so I'll try to get a VCDS log with an active bulb out on the dash.

I un-deleted post #8 for your. The following two appear to be duplicates. I have no idea what you are doing that's causing them to get deleted. What kind of device are you using to post here?

Round 2 after a trip into town and 2 light out warning. For some reason it cuts off the front running light filament. All the warning go away once the lights have been turned off and back on. All lights light normally until the blinker is used. This is a different reaction to the old module which turned off the rear parking lamp.

Could not find anything in the Wiki for the 00985 code. I dont believe the 01498 is a bulb or fuse issue as the light works fine. Everything works fine until the right blinker is used with the lights on. Currently the wiring in the headlight is not modified. That is not the side with the damaged headlight clip.

Have you checked the condition of the ground(s) for the right tail light assembly?

And the condition of the bulb sockets themselves?

Rear bulb holder is brand new and was replaced with the original again last night with no change in symptoms. Didn't like the weather seal on the new one. Wouldn't stay in the track.

The rear ground must be fine because if I add a ground it throws codes. Gets very unhappy if I pull a new ground.

The last 2 scans were with the old holder, not the new one.

Sorry for the crazy multi post. I don't trust my abilities to hit the edit button on mobile.

I did notice it turned off the right front parking filament when I was pulling the log.

The rear fog still doesn't illuminate but no faults. 11.55v (subs pulling and engine not running) at the socket. Message on dash thrown when the bulb is removed. New bulb, same result. This is the left side though.

Bulb also doesn't illuminate when using TEST in VCDS.

Edit (not on mobile!): I found a setting I missed in Adaptation. The intensity. It was set to 24% for sedan which is why it appeared that the bulb did not go out. Changed that back to 0 and we are back at square 1 everything is exactly the same as the original module. Taillight blinks over so many blinker cycles.

Found 2 burnt contacts on the right front parking light. Replaced the bulb and bulb holder with spares. Got a right parking light message. Right front parking light is out.

Also noticed that the parking filament in the right front bulb is lighting opposite to the blinker. It dims when the blinker goes bright and goes bright when the blinker dims.

Rear bulb still goes on and off at it's 7 blink interval.

The rear ground must be fine because if I add a ground it throws codes. Gets very unhappy if I pull a new ground.
That's a sure sign of demonic possession! ;)

Seriously now, I cannot imagine why overlaying an extra ground wire would make it unhappy. That makes no sense to me at all.

Dude! I'm not ruling out possession at this time! Hahaha!

Found a possible rubbed wire in the headlight between the two hot leads to the yellow bulb up there. Patched it to test and it did the same thing.

Update, decided to pull the power off the battery. left it for 5-10 minutes, and came back with VCDS and cleared the low power faults. Gotta drive it to clear the ABS steering angle low power fault. Gotta do that anyways tonight. Havnt checked for the bulb shenanigans.

I'm afraid to check for an issue because it'll just be back!

When would you say it's time to take it to someone else?

I'd rather not spend an arm and a leg on it but it's driving me insane!

I don't meant to derail anybodies thought process but for the sake of other people reading this thread.....

I had a curt trailer wiring controller wired to my Audi A3 MY2008. It worked great at first, but within a year or so I had a never ending stream of bulb out messages, or actual blown bulbs in the car. I chalked it up to an Audi being an Audi. (Electrical gremlins galore) . I had no suspicion of the trailer wiring module as it seemed to work trouble free for a considerable amount of time. Then our vehicle circumstances changed at home and Audi became wifes daily driver, and I started removing the mods on the car. The curt trailer wiring module went along with a couple other things. My bulb errors have decrease 90%. I still blow a taillight bulb every once in a while, but at more 'normal' frequency as compared to other vehicles I've owned. In my opinion.
