4 - Wife called Sunday 2/9/2020 stating engine light had come on and car was struggling. I got it, saw the EPC light had come on and drove it around. The car was rumbling/vibrating and I limped it home. On the following Monday I hooked up my VAGCOM and pulled a full scan. Scan revealed much of the same as above scan, except it did not have a cylinder 3 misfire, only cylinder 4. I went to the auto parts store and picked up an ignition coil (Intermotor E1075) and swapped it out for cylinder 4. The car seemed to be running fine after this, so I cleared the faults and considered it done.

The following Saturday I replaced all the plugs for good measure (Autolite XP Iridium XP 3923). I looked up the standard gap on the plugs which was ~ 1mm, or 39 MILS. The plugs were slightly larger than that, but I figured they were within tolerance so didnt mess with them and installed them. I did break the #3 cylinder ignition pack clip when doing this, but the connector still seemed to seat fine (I ordered a replacement plug and plan on fixing this when it arrives, but I doubt it's related to what's going on).

The following Monday (yesterday), wife called again and said the same thing was happening. Engine light and EPC light on and car strugling. I picked it up, limped it home and ran a diagnosis. This time it showed cylinder 3 and cylinder 4 misfire (among the other faults listed above). So, I took the plugs back out, re-gapped them to about 38-39 MILS. After starting the car it still sounded like it was misfiring and "rumbly" so I called it quits and here I am asking for advice.

I suspect the fuel pump relay fault needs to be addressed, but I'm not really sure where to start. I did pay for access to VW's site where they keep maintenance and repair manuals a long time ago. Searching through that I didn't see much on addressing this issue. I did see that the relay appears to be above the left foot of the driver and that I would need to remove the lower trim panel to access it.

5 - Currently have aftermarket plugs (Autolite XP Iridium XP 3923) and an ignition coil (Intermotor E1075) in Cylinder 4. No other aftermarket parts or anything installed.

6 - Specific problem is the motor sounds awful. It's misfiring and rumbling and I'm not sure what to go after next (or to call in the experts). I DO HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY MECHANIC ON MONDAY 2/24/2020, BUT I'M HOPING I CAN MAKE HEADWAY BEFORE THEN AND AVOID THE TRIP. I don't mind taking it to him and trust him, but would prefer to avoid paying for something I could fix on my own (if that's the case).

    Welcome to the VCDS forum?

Did you know there is a campaign recall for fuel pumps, relay or control module & injectors for this vehicle and useful life warranty is still active?

Also did you know there is a TSB for the wire harness and TV or EPC related aforementioned by you?

Did you want to provide the VIN number for full disclosure?

Did you read the entire JPPSG thread every page?

Can you please post all OBD2 mode data too, especially mode 3 & 9?

Did you know you can seek reimbursement for the diagnosis path or time spent at private repair shops or even your VCDS system costs if you read the JPPSG as per EPA guide?

Did you observe the fuel pump relay current tracks in WD in RTFB?

    Do you have RTFB?

No, I was not aware. I will call the dealership where I bought it in the morning and inquire about this. Thanks!

I did not, and do not have that book. Sounds like I may need to invest in one.

If you think this is a fueling issue, please have a look at the fuel pressures (specified and actual) as well as the fuel pump duty cycle in MVB 106.

I think (but am not certain) that the fault in 09 could cause hard starting, because the transfer pump probably doesn't run when the door is opened, but without the transfer pump running at all when the ignition is on, I don't think the engine would run at all...?

The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

Did you know mechanical tests are never to be substituted for block values with FP PSI because sensors can report air with no volume present?

Did you know if the block values show dead, or deviation from spec well that indicates that?

Have you checked battery health and charging system function because if low voltage is present and indeed was present on FP relay DTC, it could raise an amperage draw to the TV during crank process and wires are known to be insufficient already to this device or even the FP?

So I felt like I was getting in over my head and took the car into the VW dealership. They just called me and said the #3 and #4 coils need to be replaced. They said the coil I used in #4 is not an OEM part and so it may be causing issues. They also said the plugs I put in were not OEM and may also be contributing to the problem. They recommended replacing all 4 coils and plugs with OEM.

I asked them about the fuel pump relay code and they said their scan did not reveal any fuel pump relay fault. I find this a bit odd.

So, I'm going to have them just do the coils and plugs.
