I recently purchased a 2010 Passat with a little over 100k. When I went to look at the car the owner told me that it was running well but occasionally suffered from a harsh shift. The purchase price was absolutely unbelievable, $1000! Knowing it was worth more than that in parts I threw my money at her and ran.

I have owned the car for a couple of weeks now and I can attest to the harsh shifting, along with an occasional fight over getting it into reverse. So, after some reading and a scan that revealed a P0868 code, I decided to re-calibrate the DSG using the guide at Ross-Tech. This here is where the real problems begin. After the calibration I took the car for the prescribed test drive. What follows is my experience on that drive and the subsequent drives.

Test drive:
Car fights to go into reverse, whines and shifts hard, barely gets out of parking space
Shifts into 1st normally in D, shifts normally into second.
At first stop the car shifts back into 1st.
Pulling away the car shifts from 1st to 2nd and then the gear position indicator on the dash panel disappears!
Coming to a stop the car shifts back into 1st and will not shift no matter what I try.
I limp the car around the block in 1st and finally park it and turn it off.

Second and subsequent drives:
Car fights to go into reverse and whines, sometimes not going into reverse at all and the indicator light either flashes (uncommon) or disappears (very common).
Shifts into 1st with a clunk and almost always with a whine, but only on the first time getting into 1st
Shifting into 2nd there is a slipping and a chatter and will slip and/or chatter if you apply heavy throttle especially at low speed
Shifting into 3rd comes with a clunk but other than that seems to perform fine in 3rd, no chatter or slip
Shifting into 4th mild slipping and/or chatter again worse under load at low speeds
5th and 6th seem to perform well but its difficult to tell because the car is moving fairly quickly to load the gear up (there are no hills in New Orleans to really load the gear up)

I have ordered the fluid and filter to do a DSG fluid change and will perform that maintenance asap. The first scan with the P0868 code will be below as well as the scan after the calibration that came with code P1820 and P1815. I am currently debating testing and changing the solenoids associated with those codes. Any advise on the matter is greatly appreciated.

17252 - Transm. press. adaptation at limit stop

Possible malfunction cause:
- Transm. faulty.

Personally, I would drain the DSG fluid, remove the filter and mechatronics and perform visual inspection to see if there is any indication of damage, sludge or other concerns before ever replacing the transmission.

You may be able to "testing and changing the solenoids" and replace the DSG fluid and filter and not have any issues. I would say if the internals look good, then it maybe worth a try.

I have an Audi A3 with over 200k miles on the original DSG, so they can last, but if it did fail, I would seriously consider a manual swap. ;)

We recommend to use the Official Factory Repair Information when attempting repair and diagnoses on these vehicles.

as well as your statement on certificate matching, as I am very intrigued by all of these statements.

I am unfamiliar with the Calibration data lookup as well

I have not purchased a new one, nor do I intend to unless all other options are exhausted. Currently I am still trying to gather all the information possible to assist me in making an intelligent decision on the correct course of action. I was under the impression that at 105k mi that this vehicle is out of warranty.

Did you JPPSG and look up useful life warranty as described under CARB/EPA and as certified by the OEM?

Did you read the certificates and application and for any inconsistencies as certified or with public ADR filed or that would lead you to believe you have a claim?

Did you do your home work yet or talk to a good lawyer or governing agency?

Let me ask a series of questions & to gain a perspective or what we might ascertain, okay?

Are not the transmission and engine controller, AECD'S and which are responsible for illumination of the MIL or for SMOG fault's and the absolute control devices to maintain the proper controlled remediated GHG output?

How is it possible the controllers can comport for proper operation without a valid ADR or matching CVN as disseminated for free in the public view & if application's or from OEM website & if a DTC exists or are non functional?

Could not one argue that if the firmware levels are not the same as certified & without public disclosure, such as the transmission for example, doesn't this further imply it never comported to begin with & if no ADR exists or recall to prove the service action, would it not be subject to warranty, a safety recall or being repurchase regardless of mileage?

So you are telling me that while having a hard DTC and registered in the OBD2 side of mode 3, that no MIL exists and the firmware is of an unapproved version as disseminated on the conformity application, without ADR and not represented on the OEM's website as required by law, is that right?

Could you please post mode 9 too?

I see you deleted your post where you said there was no MIL why?


Try some Liquid Schwartz yet?

I spoke with a service writer at vw today and he provided me with the build date Oct 15, 2009 and the delivery date Mar 17, 2010. Im hoping that the delivery date and the commerce date is the same thing, mostly because he had no idea what I meant by "the date the vehicle was introduced into commerce", I know that feeling.
