Customer brought me a vehicle he'd recently purchased w/o history other than that it's a Dieselgate Buy-back car that's been modified then re-sold. Car came with 2 fobs, neither work to lock/unlock the car. Car runs and drives just fine w/o other issues.

Basically it looks like I've got a non-Kessy car that thinks it's a Kessy car and hence won't allow key programming in the typical manner. When I attempt to match the keys in address 009 Central Electrics, channel 001 is unavailable. There is a fault for a J518 in 009 which isn't installed.

Perhaps related, perhaps not, I wonder what's up with that instrument cluster fault.

Any clever folks out there have any ideas of how to proceed?

Try turning off Bit 7 in Byte 28 of the J519's coding.

No check boxes on Byte 28, and I don't know how to ask VCDS to convert the binary into the hex l coding, so hopefully I did this properly (showing my work here).

Byte 28 original binary is 10100000 = A0 in hex.

Based on what unchecking Bit 7 does on other Bytes, Byte 28 Bit 7 off binary becomes 00100000.

00100000 = 20 in hex.

Long coding becomes: 6F380E1F802F3EC4008800C17000004449000086575D05F0648020202040

Coding accepted!

Close controller go back, key cycle, confirmed J519 retains new value.

So 5K0 937 084 J looks to be the wrong BCM?

If so, and it's intended for cars with Kessy, it wouldn't surprise me at all if VW left out the radio receive bits needed to for remotes to function directly with the BCM. VW is after all the world champion at not installing a penny's worth of stuff that doesn't have any functionality in a particular car.

If that BCM has no ability to function directly with remotes, it would certainly explain why there's no Adaptation Channel 1.

The first thing I did when looking into the J518 fault was to locate this module in the WD so I could verify fuses. On a Kessy GOV this is SC20...which isn't present on this vehicle. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that if the fuse for J518 and wiring to it isn't present the remotes aren't either.

So I suppose customer gets to buy a J519 and I get to derive long coding for it based on PR codes...

Regarding generating the correct BCM coding:

After installing the correct (original) BCM for problem car I searched my database of autoscans for vehicles with a matching BCM. Of the 5 I found, I selected the one with the most similar options. I ran both VINs through Partslink to retrieve the PR codes & compared line by line. The only difference I found was the 'example' car had the panoramic sunroof while the problem car is non-sunroof.

I coded the replacement BCM with the coding from the example car. Coding accepted. Then adjusted it for no-sunroof (byte 3 bit 0-2). Coding accepted. AF380EB8803B34C4000800C1700000244FA00877435D0560648000200040

Disable factory mode, Code Keys, Test drive to take care of the traction control & TPMS lights...all happy.
