I'm working on a 2000 Golf. The airbag module was recently replaced with what was advertised as a new, uncoded unit. After installation, we attempted to follow these instructions but the coding is already in place. I'm trying to determine if we did something wrong, or if the module was not as advertised.

Here's the auto-scan:

Where's the first part of your scan?

Is the new module the exact same part number as your old one? Is the coding the same?
Normally a new ecu would be a virgin unit with no coding at all but yours looks like it been used if it already had coding registered. Also VIN numbers are locked to the ecu but being a 2000MY it might be different

According to the faults the issue is with the crash sensors. Are you sure they are connected ok?

Do you have a scan from this car with the original airbag module?

Airbag modules for these cars come in numerous configurations. The part number alone, like "6Q0 909 605 A" is not sufficient to ensure you've got the right one. The full spec includes the "Index" or "Color Code" as well. The one installed in this car at the moment is "6Q0 909 605 A /015", which may not be the correct one for the car.

This scan should predate the replacement:

To recap so understand, the part number has to be an * exact * match to the previous part? Down to the color code?

What's in the scan in post #4 is 6Q0 909 605 A /011.

Does it have to be an exact match? Not necessarily. In some cases, there are compatible supersessions. In some cases, an exactly compatible part is no longer available and other parts (such as side-impact sensors) must be updated to match the new airbag module.

Thanks Uwe.

When we view the module in VCDS, we expected to see all zeroes, and have the ability to follow your process for coding the module - if we see existing coding (and this seems obvious, but I'm still asking) - does this mean the airbag module is not in fact new/unused? I'm assuming yes but still asking for clarity.

The airbag module part number can vary based on the VIN. Now doing a generic "2000 Golf" search, I see some different options. What is the VIN?

An airbag module does not come coded... so it already being coded implies it saw some actions of some sort, but that doesn't tell us how or what. Maybe it was briefly used for testing purposes so it never really saw any road time and is "new" in that regard. We have no way of knowing the module's back story.

Some one please double check my work... but build date of June 12th, 2000, so airbag part number 1C0-909-605-A-014.

The Auto-Scans posted show airbag part number 6Q0-909-605-A with 2 different indexes. But to that end, from what I can tell 6Q0-909-605-A is for the "GOG" model, not the "GOB". I'll admit, we are kind of in some grey area here, but I'd say some wrong parts need to be removed.

Jef,

Thanks - that's incredibly informative. For my next question: how do we go about sourcing an exact/working replacement for this part, for a 20 year old car? I doubt we'll find NOS, can a used part be sourced? How do we go about getting an exact replacement is everything on ebay etc if only referencing the part number 6Q0 909 605 A - without asking for endorsement, who do we reach out to? Should we source from VW directly?
